DYRL vs EoE...which is the more beautiful film?
Phyrox replied to isamu's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I was much more impressed with EOE's visuals than DYRL. The artistic choices made, the visceral visual style and the deliberate shot compositions. DYRL is great and fun to watch, but for me there is no comparison to be made in which one is the more "beautiful" film. -
Despite the stretch to credulity in some of the science, I found none of that really bothered me. Despite the cheesy monologue at the end, I found I really liked the character. The movie has a few flaws, but they amount to very little in comparison to what it does right, which is just about everything else. It did pretty much everything that other movies this year have failed to do for me. Who would have thought watching an astronaut remove a parachute harness would be more exciting than two hours of giant robots vs. giant monsters?

Well, it doesn't look as professional as most of the builds here, but at least it's unique: My slightly modified HGUC Messala. The Napoleonic Violet I used for the head/chest and missile launchers isn't quite a match for the light purple plastic, but it's close enough for now. It doesn't transform anymore, but that's really only because I glued those parts to avoid floppiness. One more: Like I said, an amateur job, but I'm really happy to finally have a Messala that looks the business.

mospeada MOSPEADA 1/10 Scale Protector Inbit--interest?
Phyrox replied to captain america's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'd certainly get one, depending on price I might get a second.- 68 replies

I would be one of the first in line for one of those Inbit. And when I say one, I mean "as many as I can afford."

Good ending, but I still prefer the season finale of season 4. For me, that's the real end of the show. When season 4 ended I said to myself "well, that was as good of an ending as I could expect, so I won't watch the next season." My roommate threw a "viewing party" every Sunday for season 5 so I saw or heard most of it anyway. It was well done, but I wish I had been able to stick to my initial intention.

Gundam Figure Thread - Newtype GN-002
Phyrox replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Er, what scale are these? Because a decent Gundam Mk.V is a must have, as long as it isn't hugely expensive or a dumb scale.- 6025 replies

Lowering the suspension an inch or so would help a good deal. See how that '68's wheels really fill the wells, that's a critical part of the modern street look. Good luck in all car endeavors, whatever you do.
-
I dunno, tires look a little to low-profile for the stance your suspension gives the car. It's all a matter of taste, but to me something seems a bit "off" with the new set up. Nice wheels though.

So, this what I'm working on currently. A head mod for the new HGUC Messala. Now I just have to disassemble it do some painting. I'd really rather farm out that part, as I hate painting...but what can ya do? The inner-head area needs a tiny bit of work still, I need to find something to replicate the mono-eye look, as just having it all black makes it look vacant rather than intimidating. Overall though, I'm really happy to finally have a Messala, AND one that can do more than stare at its feet.

The problem with the "jokes" in that comic are they are mostly a bit of a stretch to make fit even with the requisite knowledge, and none of them funny. The concept could be good, as certain planes could easily be turned into believable characters, but the execution on this one seems, to me at least, mostly a mess.

Saw it, loved it. This is how you do a fun movie. Goofy, but not stupid. I had more fun watching this than almost anything else on the big screen this year.

Between the shadow on the center tail, the anachronistic (B-25?) horizontal stabilizer acting as the forward connector, and the absolute pointlessness of the design...it screams photoshop about as loudly as it can. Can't tell you anything else about it though.

I am surprised to see so many people here loved this movie. I thought it was very flat. Hardly anything in the movie didn't stretch credulity to the breaking point. The "social commentary" was ham-fisted and simplistic to the point of thoughtlessness. The characters were uninteresting and uninspiring. In two week's time I'll forget I even saw it. Special effects were pretty good though, I'll give it that.

Instead of a ver.ka for everything, how about they round out the catalog a bit...like gimme my MG Turn-X already.

There are far superior modelers than I that have already responded here, but I'll just add this: As a first time modeler, do not start with this kit. I understand your reasons and I have been there myself. Don't do it. It's just going to be frustrating. And if it all does come together the way you want it, its life as a toy will be measured in days, not years. By way of example, I built models all my life. Decided I wanted to build a flying balsawood craft for a change. "How hard could it be?" I thought. So I jumped into the deep end to build something really cool and difficult instead of starting simple. Had such a bad experience I never went back.

They are *terrible* in the original. The most jarring part of the movie. The brit-scientist would have been pushing it if he had been a character in a zany '60s slapstick movie. He makes Professor Fate seem like a thoughtful character study.

What was the reason they did away with the sprues? I really can't figure that out. It must have taken a long time for someone to snip all the pieces off the sprues they came on and put them in trays...but it doesn't really save the end user much time, since cleaning off nubs is far more time consuming work in comparison. It's like they saved the buyer maybe a half hour of building time in exchange for an increase in cost, difficulty in finding parts and the possibility of lost parts. No one who has ever built a model would think its a good idea...I can't figure it out.

I highly doubt it would have survived being picked up and dragged, to say nothing of being used as a weapon. Just one more thing we are expected to not think about. Which is fine, if movies were just like real life...well they'd be less exciting. But this one expected me not to think about anything. And for me at least, that's worse than being boring.

Robotech - Love Live Alive + Shadow Chronicles 2-movie set
Phyrox replied to Negotiator's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
As much as I am a bit curious about this, having never seen the original, there is no way I will gamble my time on something put together by the same people that did Shadow Chronicles. That was so bad I watched it once, then skimmed it again to see if it was as poor as my first impression, then gave it away to the first MWer to pm me. I'm not a Robotech hater, but I am a Shadow Chronicles hater.- 371 replies

Why is the scene with the space disaster all full of sound? Surely if we can get a "no sounds in space" movie, THIS should be the one...right? Hopefully it's just like this in the trailer.

Did they ever explain how a mere 8 helicopters are carrying these huge robots? The carrying copters looked like Chinooks in some scenes, but there were a lot of Pave Lows as well..but even if we give them the lifting capacity of the largest extant helo, the Mi-26, it would take 90 of them to lift something with a weight of 1980 tons. That was the wiki spec...does the movie give a substantially lower weight that I missed. Because that was one part of the movie that really struck me as stupid every time they showed it.

I know everyone in here was probably seen it, and everyone has their opinions, but might as well add mine. Despite my love of monster movies and cool robots, this was, to me, typical Hollywood summer blockbuster. Nothing particularly special. Boring predictable script, forgettable acting, dumb plotholes, brainless action, and very nice special effects. You could tell that a lot of energy and care went into it...but not that much came out. I don't consider myself a movie snob, but perhaps I am one. I want more from my movies than bang bang slice slice boom boom. The robot designs never did grow on me, but perhaps I could have gotten into the Kaiju designs if they had been showcased better. As for the person who said this movie had done a great job world building: what are you referring to? Nothing about that world (apart from monsters and robots) was any different than this one, with the exception of a one line throwaway comment about a Kaiju-centric religious sect. It certainly didn't feel lived in, nor did it draw the audience into the world like movies I've heard that phrase otherwise applied to. Not a bad movie to be sure. But not a really good one either.

That doesn't always help. With the SS I mentioned above I'd often have cops do U-turns on highways to follow me when I was out for an evening cruise. I've had cops grill me on the car's ownership history and ask for reg. when I was sitting near it reading at a park. Fast car's just set off alpha male alarm bells in a lot of cops I think.
