I see that no one appears too disturbed by their bastardizing of the Surcouf...Philistines. On a reluctant side note, there would be no reason to even contemplate locking this thread if you guys could keep your unrelated tirades out of it. Whether or not you get worked up about the "15 year war," that discussion is not really relevant to the discussion of a fictional wartime action flick.

Jeezus, that trailer sucked. My guess is this movie had a longer post-production phase than Foxx's two most recent, much praised films, and that he took this job when he was still a relative minor-player in hollywood. edit, I should at least proof these things before i post them.

Well, I asked my friend (who had heard of the movie), and he said that they are supposedly on a secret German sub. So I watched the trailer again, and noticed that while it IS the Surcouf in most ways, they changed a few things: The contours of the forward hull are totally different (and uglier in my opinion) They have added a piggyback submersible just aft of the hanger The forward 8" turret has been streamlined Still, I guess it's good to see the Surocuf getting some love. Found this image of the ship on the movie webpage. Can anyone translate the history at the bottom, maybe it "explains" the ship choice...my limited knowedge shows that they do say something about France, and it being later used by the Germans (Fu-Ran-Su katakana on the first line, and the designation UF referring to Unterseeboot-Frankreich [Kriegsmarine for "submarine of French origin"]) edit: damn, I have really edited the hell out of this post...
-
The fact that it is French pretty much precludes it from being cool. It also pretty much assures that it is fairly lame. Ah, that's just jingoistic nonsence. The French have a bad run of it the last...oh 200 years or so, but that has nothing to do with the quality of their equipment. the famous "75" from the First World War, SPADs and Nieuports from the same, Somua S-35 and Char B1 tanks from the Second... those are just the most obvious that pop into mind.

Well, the action looks a bit too "actiony" for naval warfare, but that's movies for ya. The REALLY exciting part is that the sub seems to be the Surcouf. The coolest submarine ever made. The only problem is that it was French and was sunk mid-war in the Caribbean (if I recall correctly). If this movie has a good CGI Surcouf, I will watch it, no matter how lame. The cruiser subs get nowhere near the amount of attention they deserve. Surcouf - twin 8" guns in trainable turret, one aircraft in airtight hanger, more torpedo tubes than you can shake a stick at (many of them external...thus not reloadable). Largest sub in the world at its construction, and with the second biggest guns ever put on a submarine. And, it looks cool. I WILL watch this movie (assuming my eyes haven't decived me and it is the Surcouf)

Untextured Izumo (WIP-mospeada ship)
Phyrox replied to AncientAngel's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
1) Why is your Beta's nose so long? It doesn't look like any of the line art I have ever seen? 2) I really like your Izumo, I hope when you are done with it you'll post some larger high-rez pics (and an orthographic pic or two). -
I am not a gun nut or anything, but I thought the PTRD, while owing a bit to the PzB38, was a gererally innovative gun in its own right. Certainly not a copy. On a more personal note, I don't own any guns, but I have wanted a PTRD or PTRS for a while. Not to go shooting with, just to have as a piece of interesting military history. And now here is my chance...but I don't think I can justify spending $1,700 of my student loans on a totally superfluous antitank rifle. Shoot.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a new X-wing game, I remember when Alliance came out there was an interview in which Lucasarts claimed that it was their "last original trilogy simulator." Who knows for sure, but I wouldn't bet on a new one.

jeez, that Chrysler is hard on the eyes. I much prefer their crossfire. And a '77 LeBaron? sleeper potential or no...that is a hideous thing. no offence of course, everyone's aethetic taste is different...

Well, I understand that there are several different definitions of the musclecar era, to my eyes it starts in '64 (GTO) and ends in '74 (last "muscle" trans am). Sure there have been good cars since, but the continuous era was over...and most companies were out of the game by '74 anyway. hmmm, favorite "smog-era" car...that is a good question. Most of them were as ugly as sin, but if forced, I would choose the late 70's era corvette. It may be one of the weakest 'vettes, but in my opinion it was the best looking.
-
We seem to have at least a few muscle-car drivers on MW, but I don't know who owns what...so what do we (or have we) driven as far as muscle cars/pony cars (for those that draw a distinction) go? Criteria: -None of this, "my brothers friend had, or my dad has" this is all about what YOU own(ed). i.e. your name is on the title. -Must be from 1964 - 1974 -Please no partisan stabs at Ford, or GM, or Mopar...they are all good (even if secretary special 289 'stang drivers think they are infinitely cooler than they are) Personally, I had a 1970 SS454 (LS5) Chevelle, now I have a 1970 RAIII Firebird Trans Am. (i don't think my '69 eldorado counts as muscle...so i won't count that).

Different strokes for different folks. I will admit to having had a good time whipping around on back roads in my dad's old Z (Z31)... But I will say that I will probably always have an old muscle car (or kin) as my daily driver. Once you go that route...it is really hard to imagine giving it up. Even my friends, who were mostly into contemporary cars, were awed and impressed by my old chevelle (to the point that a muscle car is now on his "to buy" list). That feel...there is something addictive about it. I have driven my friend's 50th anniversary 'vette, and sure it is fast, but something felt missing. It was so antisceptic, NOTHING like my 454. It may be faster (top speed certainly, acceleration...I'm not sure), but it doesn't feel anywhere near as fast, or fun, or brutal. I see the merits of these little-engined wonders that are so popular. I really do, but for my part I have to side with Lightning 06...Give me torque, and lots of it, wrapped up in a massive, inefficient v8, please.

what is this doing in fan works? should be in other (and even then...) and I'm not sure about any name connection. destroid isn't a bizarre name...intentional misspelling of destroyed or the G.I. Joe guy...or just a "hey, this sounds cool." sounds pretty coincidental. If they called it SDF-1, or Roy Focker, or something unique to Macross maybe, but destroid...no Could be of course, but I wouldn't bet on it

Gall Force mecha, ships and artbooks?

oops, got my books mixed up. THIS one is good, it is another one (called Star Front) that is no good. The one pictured here has good stuff on Eternal Story. -
War Of The Worlds Trailer is OUT! Summer 2005!
Phyrox replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
sure, kudos to Pendragon for going the route they did...but that only goes so far. If the effects and acting are not up to my standards (and I'm not saying they definitely won't be), then I won't be able to defend it. Good intentions do not a good movie make. -

After having watched the trailers for the Pendragon version...I am a bit unimpressed. I'll probably give it a shot if it comes out in my area, but it looks a bit on the 'cheesy' side to me. -
Untextured Izumo (WIP-mospeada ship)
Phyrox replied to AncientAngel's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I can't be of any help with the texturing...but I love it. Keep up the good work. Artmic spaceship designs were the best. -
now how about a bigger version of that Vf-1...

Gall Force mecha, ships and artbooks?
Phyrox replied to Tekkaman Blade's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yup. There are some character stuff in each as well of course. I would if I could, but the books are in CA, and I am in TX. Getting my dad to scan the covers is one thing, but it would be a bit complicated to get specific mecha scanned. If there were just a few mecha/ships that you wanted to see, I could try and request it though. -
Gall Force mecha, ships and artbooks?
Phyrox replied to Tekkaman Blade's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The other books I have are all either on rhea/earth chapter, or are just color/promotional art of characters and the like. But these three and the artmic bibles should be enough to satisfy your fix. -
