Toynami Announces Masterpiece Cyclones at Toyfair
Phyrox replied to chowyunskinny's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Me too. I think they are gonna find it was a mistake to do these instead of the Beta. At least that is my hunch, knowing nothing about their internal finances and whatnot. I've never known anyone who really, really liked the cyclone. Then again, the Beta's fans may just be a very vocal minority. -
Well, I'll add mine. Character: Phyrox Server: Gorgonash Faction: Horde Class: Warrior I mostly like goofing off with my friends when I'm on. I'm not much into endgame (although I liked running MC, AQ and the like when I had the opportinuties). I spend most of my time on self-designated missions and roaming the countryside with my buds trying to bust heads. And say what you will about ganking, you haven't played the game until you and a friend have surprised a group of lowbies and chased 'em all down. My current goals are: reach 70 get the PvP 2H mace finish dreadmist (my progress on this one has slowed since no one runs UBRS or Strat since BC it seems) get Everlook and Ratcht rep up to 2100/21000 revered

I'll tell ya what sucked was as a casual 60 for many months I was finally starting to amass equipment that put me in a class apart from most. I wasn't THAT geared out, but I was certain to dominate any lvl59 I came across...then along comes BC and lvl 58 greens are comparable to the stuff I'm wearing. Now that I'm even more casual than before (limited PC time) I'm back to being a whipping boy. And is it just me or has everything they have done to the LFG system just made it harder to get a group? I wish they had left well enough alone. Global LFG was a disaster, and now the new LFG tool seems to me to be the most unused part of the game. AND: no added rep. rewards for Steamwheedle. Now, I know we weren't promised anything...but I had hopes. As a much maligned engineer, I was hoping goblin rep was going to be their way of paying us back. After seeing the flying machine in one of the BC previews I was confident goblin rep would give us something besides 10% discount. Nope. Revered with all 4 goblin cities, and for nothin'.

I'm not sure I understand you here. Those are the best times to get a kill, and I can't see why they wouldn't "count." If you use trickery, deception, or ambushes to kill your enemy, he's still dead. In air combat a "fair fight" is a rare thing, don't see why Red Flag should be any exception.

Mospeada: Love, Live, Alive funsub

A cassette? Do they even make those anymore? -
I like your proto-tread there. The part of the Tread's transformation that always required the most "magic" is that the cockpit could never fold down and fit neatly over the gun port. In the line-art the cockpit is too large, and the gun port too small. In your version you have made a nice compromise, but I've always thought the right cockpit module could make or break a Tread rendition. And the more line-art accurate, the better the Tread looks. That's how I see it at least. That (and the legs) are my biggest problem with this CM thing. And I had never thought of the forward landing gear/Legioss support arm not fitting. But the Capt's right. Huh.

I gave it a 1/5 because that was as low as I could go. Total waste of my time. I really dislike the Macross pop-music, and besides being an overly long, and fairly lame, music video 2012 doesn't really offer anything to the viewer. I'm a fan of Macross, but Flashback hardly even counts in my book.

OK, I deleted all my PMs already. To anyone who wants my copy of this movie, if you can print/email me a shipping label for USPS/UPS/FedEx it's yours. As long as I don't have to pay for shipping I want it out of here. And as an aside, The Sentinels weren't the worst animated thing ever. It wasn't great, but it wasn't THAT poorly animated. In fact some of the invid invasion of Tirol was the best those little scouts ever looked. -
So no one else seems to mind that these are more like "re-imagings" of the Alpha and Beta? Hmm. For the Alpha I don't mind so much, since I already have the Toynami. But for the Beta, I'd like one that looks like a beta before I get one with curves where it is supposed to be angular. Beggers can't be choosers they say. But I can't bring myself to be as excited as most I guess. And I have really been holding out hope for a Beta too...
-
Well, on the one side, I am pretty enthused that SOMEONE is making a Beta/Tread finally. But on the other hand, it doesn't exactly look like I would have hoped. I'm still gonna get a set, of course, but I can't say I'm that happy with the execution at this point. A bit too many liberties taken with the Alpha and Beta for my tastes. The Alpha's chest is an eyesore, and the Beta's lower legs are gonna look like powerpuff girls'. -The collapsable rack looks really odd -The head looks far too elongate -The cockpit looks to "droopy" -The lower legs are too roundy -The top of the fuselage/torso is too flat The Beta looks pretty good, but it doesn't look "right." Same for the Alpha. If these looked better/more accurate I'd be a lot more excited than I am now. And if they really are the same scale as the Toynami, I'd expect better leg-fuselage mating in the Beta's fighter mode. My pics to compare to the two above: And yes, I know there is a lot of anime magic in the Beta, and that probably accounts for some, but not all of the inaccuracy.

That doesn't seem to be what the article says. The level of the sea outside isn't what's bothering them, its the crust of the eath distorting 1-2mm. It's the moon's pull on the floor of their factory they are concerned with. I don't see how the movement of the tides could effect the plant in any way. Although I'm sure there is a great deal I do not understand about tidal forces.
-
I'm not sure I understand you here

Tolerences like that are just ridiculous. I know we can't go back to the days of wires and fabric, but maybe we should pull back a bit on the overengineering going on with modern aviation. The end results are spectaular to be sure, but...well I don't know but what. But something doesn't feel right about decade long gestation periods, more wiring than a small town, and tolerances so fine the goddamned tidal forces need to be accounted for. But maybe I'm just crotchety.

Anyone want mine? If you pay shipping it's yours (although I'm lazy, so the shipping is gonna be fedex which I can do from work, so it'll be more than USPS). It's so bad, I don't even want it taking up space in my dvd collection, and that's pretty bad considering Atragon is still in there, and that's pretty lame. -

So, I just saw this thing. I thought I'd contribute my thoughts to any undecideds out there. First of all I'm not comparing it to contemporary anime, I don't really watch anime besides a few select classics. Well, it was terrible. I really, really thought all the naysayers on this board were exaggerating with their condemnations. They weren't. Hand to God, they were not. The cel animation I didn't mind, besides the character designs (which, as has been said, were not great). The CG was atrocious. Again, I thought people were being overly harsh, but this really looked like a "Rebel Assault" cut scene. I didn't mind the CG models exactly, but their movement. The stiffness of everything really stood out, there was no fluidity of motion with any of the mechs or starships. What an eyesore. I was particularly irked by this because, not caring much for the Robotech story, I only watched it to see some of my favorite mecha back in action. The battles, with their perfectly lined up and identically arranged units really added to the amateurish feel. The explosions might have been the biggest surprise. Like out of a PS1 game. Nearly all identical, and all just a blurry orange ball. At least once you could see an explosion "clipping" the ship it was blowing up on, exactly like a PS1 game. The old changes in some of the old designs (giving Ikazuchi's starwars-style hangers and giving Garfish synchro cannons) added nothing, and I thought it kinda lame not to be more faithful. The story was booorrring, and tired. The dialog was painful. Seriously people, who did they think the audience was? Aging Robotech fans would demand better dialogue and newer, younger people...well they're never gonna see this anyway, who are we kidding? As for what I did like: The cyclone that Vince used looked pretty sweet, and I'm a big fan of the Icarus design. That's it. So, to sum up: Very disappointing CG animation +childish dialog + banal plot = reluctant agreement that SC is a stinker. I'm bummed that it was such a waste. -

I think even that is overly optimistic. -
Make that three other people. If they were the quality of the jokemachines I'd be all over 'em. The morphers are pretty nice in battloid, but not so good in fighter mode.

Nope. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting/eating is an old expression. It means you don't really know the quality of something until you actually try it. I know what people think they are saying when they shorten it, that just isn't what it means...well that, and the short version makes no sense on its own. But back to the toynami vs. yamato bickering, by all means. -

I could not care less about "toynami vs. yamato" arguments, and I've already mentioned my lack of enthusiasm for the cyclones. But this always drives me crazy: That is NOT the saying. "the proof is in the pudding" might be far more widely used today than it should, but anyone can see it makes no sense. The saying that applies here is, "the proof of the pudding is in the tasting." I do not know how the original phrase was perverted, but there you have it. edit- Erased a seperate comment dealing with shaggy's semantics being clear. I actually don't care that people are talking past each other. More nonsense for us to scroll past, but I don't care enough to involve myself. -
Well, I'M still jonesin' for this thing. The only thing I fear is that its forward end will look like crap when not attached to the alpha. Too much anime magic for it not to, unless they use swapable parts (which I hope they do). That could be a deal breaker for me, as I've always liked the beta better as a stand-alone rather than as a booster. But like I said, I'm glad to hear they are still at least trying to drum up interest with these displays.

I think you have misunderstood me. I am not saying anything "against" the show. I have only ever heard good things about it, and I have no doubt that it is indeed a top-notch sci-fi epic. I didn't imply that the lack of realism that I noted made the show bad, just that it was, well, unrealistic. I enjoy many shows and movies that have far larger flaws. No need to get hot under the collar. And about WWI, there were certainly units which took unbelivably high casualty rates, but I can't think of a battle in which 70% casualties was experianced. The first day of the Somme, and many other offensives, were bloodlettings of unheard of proportions but as was pointed out, those were unsustainable. The French army simply broke down due to the stresses of loss rates much lower than 70% (among other things). But Noy, I don't think I have to "come off" anything. I am a pretty humble guy, and don't think I have said anything here which implies otherwise, nor have I made an attempt to use whatever education I have to beat anyone over the head. I tried to make a few small points, backed up with some details, then mentioned my training in passing in regards to something else. If you or anyone else thinks I have acted highhanded that has not been my intent.

I love Mospeada, but I can't say I'm too excited. I've just never liked the "cyclone." "Alphas" and "betas" I love, and all the "invid," but the "cyclones" I think I'll skip. For a Beta to go with my Alphas...or a set of 1/48 Invid. Ohhh. But no. I guess some people will be happy. I guess. -
The most basic precepts of military strategy are pretty universal. Sustained 70% casualty rate is unsustainable and unrealistic in ANY setting.
-
The pink Zaku from Seed Destiny should be easy and fun enough. I know there is at least a 1/144 out there.

Boarding actions in space eh? The physics boggle the mind. And I am more a naval historian by training than a military historian, so I "get" the differences. But by all means, enjoy your show. I'm not saying it's bad, I've never seen it. But For however well it describes grand strategy and operational level details, it doesn't sound like a terribly realistic show. More so than Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5 and the like...but that isn't saying a great deal.
