  1. Anyone here speak French as a native tongue? I have been translating a couple of French books (on the Br.693 and the Surcouf) in my free time and although I have done alright with google translate, and babelfish, and various online dictionaries...there is the occasional technical term or phrase that manages to elude me. I had a friend who took French in college and grad-school, but although she can help with untangling a run-on sentence, she was no help whatever with "cheval de bois," for example. Which as it turns out seems to be what they call a ground loop. (horse of wood = rocking horse). It isn't much I can't decipher, but any volunteers for help on these technical translations would be helpful (only on page 20 or so of the Surcouf book, but I'm sure there will be a lot I get stuck on).
  2. Alternate reality, reboot, prequel, whatever you want to call it, and whatever it was intended to be... What it is, ultimately, is a so-so movie. And that is far more important than any connection it may or may not have. I could write some about how it was far too derivitive of Alien, or how the characters were anything but characters, or plot foolishness, but it isn't worth the time. Besides, others here have covered those bases already. I went in with low expectations, and they were met. I thought the best part of the movie were the lines dropped from other sources (alien, aliens, lawrence of arabia), and that isn't a good sign.
  3. Oooh, thanks for that. That's brutal. I may be biased, but the best looking musclecar Detroit ever produced. One of the best looking cars, really.
  4. I am going to assume he is a huge fan of the pre-war Auto Union Grand Prix racers and is just showing off his fandom. Yeah, that's probably it.
  5. The only "new" Legioss/Tread that I'm interested in is that rough sketch from a few years ago in that hobby mag. I really dug that...but it was just a sketch. That ugly little thing on the right in this new illustration is a pretty big step down from the original if you ask me.
  6. Most of Palladium stats and descriptions of minor mecha are simply made up, with little to no referrence to original designer intentions. The Commanchero crew description is clearly intended to reflect the Mi-24 crew chief + small squad accomodations, but the design itself shows no evidence that this was intended (where do they enter/exit from? Also, I doubt that this drawing was consciously intended to represent an alternate version. The heli design is not very well developed in the series, the line art for it is pretty limited, and I'd bet the guy drawing that still just gave the design a look and didn't pay too much attention to minor deviations. It's a minor image, and it is still recognizable as a commanchero "In-universe," sure, it's a varient. In real life, just a drawing that didn't adhere very closely to the other official line art.
  7. I hope that trailer is not too representative, in that it only shows action and clever lines where the actual movie will be slow and well written. What still sets Alien apart despite the innumerable copies is its deliberate pace and refusal to transition to an action pic, even when the "action" starts. Not that this movie is supposed to be a new Alien, but in this genre of "explorers find monster/disaster and must survive while cut off," Scott has already made the best one, I'd like to see him top it rather than join the crowd of his lesser imitators. Truth be told I doubt it'll hold up, in my eyes at least. The trailers give me the feel that this will be well done, like Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, but not groundbreaking like Alien or Blade Runner. At least let's hope it's not Kingdome of Heaven or Robin Hood quality moviemakinig.
  8. Some Zeta releases renews my hope we'll see a HGUC Messala someday. I like the older, unique Gundam designs. All the new stuff looks the same to me.
  9. Fate unknown? I'd say it is pretty well told by this photo: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2056/1829548633_9f4cc19f7c_o.jpg You might have been able to salvage a part or two and combine it with another 550 and say you had "restored" his car...but I'd say its days as an automobile are long over.
  10. James Dean's Porsche was regular old silver, nothing like that ugly thing. And I have never read anything about the paint contributing anything to the accident. In fact, had his car been more visible/shiney I'm sure it would have helped.
  11. Your supercharget doesn't go off and on. It is always on, even if you can't hear the whine or feel a surge. I don't know much about that particular engine, so I can't give any particular advice...but I'd stick with higher octane fuel if I were you.
  12. What I don't get is how a movie about testing F-35s is called "Top Gun." Should be called Patuxent Summer or something. Anyway, now that Top Gun is in Yuma or wherever, wouldn't want to see a movie centered there anyway.
  13. It would seem much fairer to compare it to other fighters which first flew in 1945, or even 1944, but I see what you mean. I've never read, or don't recall, details from the test flights of the J7W, but I'd bet for all that sexyness it would have been beset by the same sort of stall issues the Ascender suffered from and would never have been a true success. Don't let that stop ya from loving it though. It is a beautiful aircraft (I personally think it's ugly, but I know that isn't the consensus).
  14. Plum Crazy and Sublime are great colors, but I'd go in a different direction. White. Black is "bad ass," and purple is "cool," but white almost makes these old beasts classy. Or as classy as they can be. Plus, it really just looks good. I'd pick up some new wheels though. And unless you are upgrading your carbs, adding a blower, or planning on taking it to the track don't get a fiberglass hood.
  15. Just a pet peeve of mine: FAR side of the moon. Not the dark side. The dark side is constantly in flux, sometimes the side facing us is dark, sometimes the other side is far, sometimes half and half, etc. The far side, however, is always the far side (it takes the same amount of time to rotate on its axis as it does to complete one orbit of earth). You'd think they could at least have figured that much out. Also, I will likely not watch this. Seems like a good idea for a short, not a feature.
  16. Who cares what the race in the original is? As long as the character and story are translated well, nationality, haircolor, even time period can be mixed around and still make for good entertainment and compelling fare. Seven Samurai, awesome. The Magnificent Seven, awesome. A better example would be King Lear and Ran. Kurosawa took some liberties with the bard, but the essence was there, the compelling plot and character elements remained intact. No one want's a shitty "re-imagining," but if it's to be done well, who gives a care if the nation of origin of a character isn't what it was in the original. If you love everything about the original, watch the original. Someone wants to take the original and retell the same story, as long as it "works," more power to 'em.
  17. Even a movie with real seals can't have realistic explosions?? C'mon.
  18. A bit off-topic, but I do not believe any StuG III versions lacked overhead and rear armor. And I'm pretty sure about that. If you mean other SPGs based on modified Pz.III-ish chassis, like the Hummel, then sure. Also, didn't the Spartas not have any frontal protection for the driver? Seems a bigger problem. Although one not one that ever really bothered me.
  19. These look great, very well done (I'm just not a big fan of ride armor). Whenever that Inbit figure coming, I'm getting that set. Keep us posted!
  20. Just a head's up, my personal + bank card info was used to make a clone card which someone tried to use yesterday. Could be a coincidence of course...I suppose. But I hope whoever hacked the PS user data gets burned. If you don't like sony, that's one thing. Screwing the 70million users? Not cool.
  21. That's great...but when's my english version #27 going to come out? Also, I don't know if this is still a viable strategy, but when I bought my original 26 volumes I searched on bookfinder (or maybe abebooks) by serial number. I found 'em all from various sellers who had no idea what they were and just wanted to offload them for between $2 and $7 each. That was some time ago, but if you want to get in to FSS cheap, I'd give it a shot.
  22. Whatever qualities this new movie may have (or may not have), it will doubtless not feel or look or sound anything like the first two. That, for me, is enough for me to steer clear of it. Call me backwards-looking, or a curmudgeon, but that's my view. It probably won't be shameful, like the AVPs, but it won't measure up. Look deep within yourself, you know it's true. It'll be like Kingdom of Heaven compared to A Lion In Winter. Not bad, but not classic.
  23. Modern jets? booring. But here's something those of us in SoCal can enjoy: The newly flying Fw-190 will be flying at Chino this Saturday (8th) for one of the museum's events. The email I got didn't say much about how long it'd be in the air, or whether it'd be available for ground inspections/photos, but it'll be there. An honest to god 190 in Chino. While you're there you can check out some of the other rare/one-of-a-kind aircraft at the museum.
  24. Unlike most of you, I didn't vote for anything macross. I suggested a golden age of aviation series. Racers, early monoplanes, etc. etc. Very poorly represented in plastic, and probably slightly more marketable than niche sci-fi planes that even all fans don't know. Still, no way they'd do it.
