I don't think they designed SDF-2 to be able to transform, besides the Storm Attacker mode of SDF-1 is made in order to connect the main gun with the OTEC reactor so there are no official design for transformable warship at that time. SDF-2 is just a human made gun destroyer with bigger size. The attached ARMD carrier is for increasing VF carrying capacity and not originally designed as 'arms' for the SFD class. New Macross Carrier IMO is the first human/zentreadi design of a variable warship centering around the Macross Cannon.
