  1. Hi all, I've already started mold-prep for our Blueberry friend. I have to build a new custom mold box for the beam cannon pretzel: it's so large that none of my remaining boxes are big enough. YaY for plexiglass cutting
  2. You know, I never watched the series, despite seeing the mecha everywhere and even having had several of the kits under the Robotech Defenders repackaging. The kits were very impressive for their day and I think many of the 1/48 kits would still look decent now with a little re-working. I just saw the first 8 episodes and I'm bloody impressed with the series so far, not to mention hooked! It's so brilliantly done and the story and themes are still very relevant today. This is definitely a MUST-watch, and now we're going to need to lean-on Bandai to make a PG Dougram!
  3. What you can do in virtual modeling and what works with real-world plastic are two different things. What you're describing sounds like what I explained above; something I thought of almost 2 decades ago. Transforming models are moving puzzles where compromise is key, especially if you want to be faitful to the look of the design. Usually, solving a problem in one area creates one in another. You can add complexity to the transformation to get it to work a certain way, but that also adds fragility. But by all means, show us what you've got.
  4. It's not a creativity problem, it's a physics problem. You cannot make a 2.5cm dia. helmet pass through a 1.8cm dia. armor neck hole and you cannot make an engine block teleport through the front of the abdomen of a figure and emerge at the back. The best you can hope for is the rider lifting his butt off the seat, over the tank and "fall" between the tank and front fairing without being maimed in the process.
  5. The anime transformation is completely unrealistic (read: impossible) from a physical standpoint. It was just drawn to look cool to pre-pubescent boys and simple enough for the sweatshop animators to draw.
  6. I had contemplated doing a Cat's Eye in 1/60 recently, but I arrived at the party too late. I'm surprised they didn't at least do the sto-wing feature since it doesn't transform.
  7. I answered that on the previous page. I'd like to avoid throwing too many hypothetical choices into the mix, especially this early. Better to see if there's adequate demand the two main hero mecha (particularly the one that is the subject of the thread) first and foremost.
  8. That's how the outfit was designed: the wearer dons some sort of sweater (light-arms resistant?) over which the hard armor pieces go. Although the bottom half (crotch, knees) was always shown as black in the color-calls and style-sheets. Also, let's hope that the new 1/12 toy sells well and is followed-up with a VR-041 and VR-038. I'm pretty sure we'll at least see a Ley version, seeing as how it requires the least amount of new tooling.

  10. Also, add an extra 6 inches to any 6-foot soldier to account for the thickness of the helmet and the high-heels of the boots, armor-mode boot extensions not withstanding... And assuming Riobot scaled the figure appropriately to begin with.
  11. 30 orders per kit. If you can help spread the word, that's definitely a huge plus! As a precaution, I recommend using the 3D renders in Jorwar's OP as reference and referring to it as an Auroran/Ajacs doppleganger kit, just to be safe. I don't use any copyrighted images or trademarked names (other than in parentheses) when referring to my kits to avoid any, er... "Imperial entanglements." Also, you can add member RKSC to the list of interested parties for one ofeach/any SC kit.
  12. ...Aaand it looks like the Blueberry Crab project gets the green light! I will start setting things up and taking payments starting tomorrow.
  13. What if it ends-up being a total turd of a toy, or it's delayed? If i waited for the "right" time to release a model I never would, because there's ALWAYS something being released/delayed by some other company. If anything, having expensive releases staggered as opposed to clustered-together makes more financial sense and ultimately, I have my own projects and schedule. If people are interested they call dibs, if not, the project isn't self-supporting and I move on. People vote with their wallets and if they'd rather have yet another sketchy Legioss toy produced in the thousands as opposed to a hand-crafted Inbit model of which only a few dozen will ever be made, then that's where the money flows.

  15. Auroran and Spartas are more expensive to develop by virtue of their variable geometry and the extra time required to engineer them properly. Something like a Bioroid is more like a Zentran mecha in that the shapes are more straightforward. Compound curve/organic shapes are > complex than squared, but still < compared to anything variable.
  16. There was a 1/48 plastic Bioroid kit made by LS and also re-issued under Academy. It's not great, but it's something. Any scratchbuilding project of this type is easily several thousand dollars in labor. Bigger means more complexity, more detail, bigger molds, more resin and a higher development cost. It would already be a challenge to find enough interested parties to do a more manageable 1/48 scale model that I don't think it would be cost-feasible to do something larger. I have the skills to get it done, but often times peoples' finances struggle to keep-up with their desires.

The general form of the Matchbox Hovertank is OK, and is perhaps one of the very best toys in the whole Robotech line, but I'm confident that I could hit a home-run for both that and the Auroran. Who knows, if we ever get to green light one, it may open the door to a whole slew of otherwise unattainable highly-detailed SC stuff. It's actually a very decent series that will probably never get a reboot because the original was so badly received.
  18. Centimeters, not inches. The stats put the Crusader at 9m in length (closer to 18cm in 1/48), but I like to size my mecha so as to be able to seat actual human-sized pilots in the cockpits. The stats and reference material for SC mecha are so very elusive that I might as well fill them in properly.
  19. One kit that could be built in any of the 3 modes (Crusader, Cross-Fighter, Cosmo-Sniper) Based on the few numerical values I could find, it would be somewhere in the range of 21-24 long in Crusader (fighter) mode, once properly scaled to 1/48. I wouldn't consider the current thread as anything more than just a project primer at best, simply because people can be rather fickle over long wait periods.
  20. My Crabs are already perfectly scaled with my 1/48 Legioss Armo-Soldier kit, but that's neither here nor there. Have Evolution provided any height specs for their Soldier yet?
