Macross Frontier Episode 6 Talkback Thread *READ 1st Post*
Major Focker replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
yep, just watched it. nice release. it's the third ep6 i've seen now. i guess one of the benefits of rewatching episodes is that you catch more of the subtleties that you miss on first viewing. i just noticed that when leon asked cathy for a "favor", cathy glanced at the desk clock which showed 15:44. not sure about the significance of showing that shot, but from previous episodes it was shown that leon was meticulous in delineating work time from personal time. in this scene though, leon is asking a favor well within work time, where he probably could have just ordered it as official business. i wonder if this is meant to emphasize leon working on a personal agenda but exploiting official resources. i know there's already been a lot of talk about leon being a suspicious character, and it's pretty obvious he has an agenda of his own. but this scene is a good example showing just how subtle and devious leon is in his machiavellian ways. nice touch! for all we know, this might even have a plot significance later on. -
ah, i see. i was kinda hoping gg would update their ep7 release. oh well.. just watched shinsen ep6. great as usual. just thought the dramatic scene between alto and sheryl was handled better in the other subs. now i'm eagerly waiting for ep7 edit: nah, i take that back. for the most part shinsen best handled the conversation between alto and sheryl. just that gattai talked a bit more about sheryl not remembering her mom's face but that at least she had the earring as a memento. and when alto leaves, he says he's "taking" the charm with him and sheryl clarifies that it's just a loan and that he HAS to get back and return it (other subs had alto already borrowing it from the start). nice touches, i thought

i had no plans of buying this....but...but..but now... argh! -
as mentioned, if it's going to be just one, then it better be your favorite. if you want out of the ordinary, you're probably looking for VE-1 or the VT super ostrich. they are rarer though, but a number of HK sellers seem to have been dumping their stock recently. beware though that importing stuff to PH can increase your cost by 30 to 50% to cover for shipping and customs. so you might want to check the local boards first like greattoys online. as the release of the new yamato 1/60 line nears, you can expect more people will be selling off their old versions. for the price you've mentioned, you might even be able to get two. edit: but if indeed you want a model rather than a toy, you can get a squadron of models for the price of one yamato toy. but that's before you factor in the cost of paint, tools etc.. might not be worth it if you're just going to build one.

i wonder if this means that there will be an episode where sheryl and ranka sing together... hmmm..

logically speaking, it should-- if vajra are indeed protoculture based and it is an established fact that all protoculture based technology have this limitation. that it was a premise articulated at the start of the episode does not make it the absolute truth. it may simply be a case of humanity making a bold (though possibly misguided) assumption that they know all about protoculture technology. or a bit milder, it may be interpreted as : based on all available evidence to date, exhibits of protoculture based technology share a common limitation with regards to fold transportation.. it would not be surprising that as humanity learns more about protoculture (either through ongoing research, or encountering more/newer variants of protoculture technology) that they would discover that some of these limitations were not actual, but just perceived to be so given the knowledge available at the time. closest real world example i can think of is electrical transmission. for a while scientist were fretting that they were rapidly approaching the physical limit of conducting electricity through wires... then they discovered some materials at cool temperatures had superconducting properties..then later they discovered temperature wasn't a limitation either and began to develop room temperature superconductors. going back to macross, fold travel is relatively new to humanity despite the rapid strides and accelerated pace due to contact with protoculture races. for all we know, the zentraedi technology from which human fold science is largely based, may actually be outdated tech in terms of protoculture advancement. humanity just happened to encounter them first. OR, vajra may not be protoculture at all

so as not to be misunderstood: i like big, bad, SDF-sized battroids. the execution is indeed very entertaining, not to mention cool. i just wish that their existence was better supported in the storyline, like it was in SDF which greatly added to the plausibility of the design. extrapolating from the SDF logic of re-aligning the power grid to fire the macross cannons, this may still hold true for later macross ships if one would assume that each macross ship has several power centers (which seems to be what was shown in the diagnostic screens in MF ep7), and that in cruiser mode it would be optimal to have them distributed given the size of these ships, but that to fire the macross cannons it would be optimal to bring them closer for more efficient handling of the power discharge. think yoga postures that aim to align chakras for optimal energy flow, but please, no pics of the SDF in lotus pose they still could have instead designed alternate power wirings instead of transforming the whole ship, but i'm willing to give them that. this argument falls flat however, given that the gunships have their own reactors (i always thought they relied on the ships main reactors). but if indeed they are independent, it begs the question as to why they need to be docked in the first place. they would be much more versatile if separately deployed, as is the doctrine in the PC game Homeworld 2, where the dreadnaught (basically a big gun with thrusters) can be used in the forward lines while the mothership and carriers hang back. that game by the way is obviously inspired by macross ie. big beams and itano circus missile volleys. i would encourage you to check it out

while we're on the subject of big guns, i'm interested to know if there were ever any official material explaining the following: 1. any advantage of the later guns being "held" vs the original "mounted" SDF variety 2. why the later guns are handheld rather than arm mounted ala megatron 3. the need for transformation to fire the main gun if there are no official materials, i'd appreciate your theories as well here's my take: 1. comparing firing a bazooka and a rifle (assuming they have dimensions and weight), using the rifle shooting stance allows for faster aim and broader firing arcs without having to move/shift the entire torso/body. but if bretai's 180 towards the end of DYRL is any indication, quickly maneuvering entire ships to get into firing position seems workable enough. besides, at the distances they're shooting, there really isn't a need for huge deflections/course alignment (ie. at long distances you just need a few degrees of course correction to line up a distant target). 2. what are they going to use those big hands for (aside from holding the gun)? unless they're designing for grappling judo tactics, having the gun arm mounted would have sufficed 3. in SDF/DYRL it was explained as a means of realigning the power grid, but in the later purpose-built ships, i imagine they could have sorted this out. unless battroid form really confers some tactical benefits even for really big ships. as to what, i can't wrap my head around it. so i'm very interested as to what others think about it. seems like the later designs simply reflected a desire for bigger, badder battroids..

hilarious episode and the animation ain't bad either. i'd daresay the character animation is better than those in some of the previous episodes. i hope sheryl ends up with alto. lonely celebrity types don't get much luck on that in macross.. -
um, is this still on?

i'm a big fan of the monster and its big guns, and the KM definitely put up a good show in ep7. i have to wonder though at the logic of portraying the KM as having more firepower than an escort ship (the Dulfim seems to be at least destroyer-class) as is implied when: - the Dulfim seems to have been defending itself poorly and the KM almost single-handedly bailed them out - Dulfim crew were asked to brace for the shockwave, implying they themselves don't have any armaments of the KMs caliber so one has to wonder why escort ships wouldn't pack the same or bigger guns than a KM, and more of them. could it be that: - the Dulfim does have big guns but were disabled/destroyed in prolonged combat by the time the KM arrived - escort ships do pack big guns and use them but don't get much airtime in ground-based tactical assault scenarios, the KM makes sense. they can project a lot of firepower where the big ships can't get too or perhaps would be overkill. in realworld military, KMs would be the equivalent of a combined artillery and MLRS unit for when the engagement is too far inland for naval bombardment to reach or when the situation is fluid and requires a tactical approach. but in a space battle, i would expect the big ships to have the biggest guns in play. for that matter, why have cheyenne/tomahawk destroids on deck (in foxholes) and exposing human lives, when one could have battery emplacements operated from below deck under better armor? i'm not ranting here, just genuinely curious as to the logic of these things in the macross setting.

in that case you'll need to "author" them as regular DVDs. info here might help: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-repli...cfm/928988.html depending on the authoring software you use, most would take care of adjusting the resolution without cropping the frame or subtitles -

either one was cool. in retrospect, the afterburner reference was a good one. just that the "scent" threw me off (pardon the pun) because the sentence dragged to long making the phrase less tight. "stay close enough to smell my afterburners" might have been a good compromise, but heck i'm no expert. like i said, i'm just thankful you guys do what you do! cheers! -

missed that at the start because the subs were running over eachother. caught it after you pointed it out. yeah the f at the start was unwarranted. even sounded pretentious -

DVD-R tend to have better compatibility with DVD players. if you go with DVD-RW, "finalizing" them improves compatibility because they basically are turned to normal DVD-R, so defeats the purpose of using RW. me, i'll be holding out for well subbed blurays. this show (this ep in particular) is definitely worth full HD! -

edit: no mention of shinsen when i started typing and by the time i post, 2 or 3 were asking about them. MF fans on the same wavelength apparently. possibly linked by purpe crystals? has shinsen dropped MF from their roster? i don't think i've seen their ep6 much less ep7 (yeah, they had a raw, but that doesn't count). i've preferred their subs (balance of translation/interpretation and presentation) in past episodes so i'm keen to see what they'll do on ep7. compared GG and AiA and it seemed to be a trade off between "lively dialogue" and presentation. the AiA version was much cleaner and well composed (though i don't know how much liberty they took in the interpretation) such that they avoided being too literal and didn't have subs that just flashed for less than half a second just to keep up. having said that i thought AiA was too "polite" and i actually enjoyed the GG subs more, despite the cluttered presentation and sometimes clunky sentence structure. what i mean is: - when ozma tells alto not to fall behind, GG says "stay close enough to smell my ass" and AiA say"keep your nose on the scent of my afterburners" - when ozma unleashes a missile barrage, GG says "eat this!" and AiA says "take this!" - as alto is charging the carrier, GG says "that ship is like a hedgehog", AiA says "the enemy is high-ranking" minor quibbles to be sure, and have no idea on accuracy, just goes to show how strongly subbers can influence the flavor or character of a show with their interpretations of the dialogue. when all is said and done, i'm just grateful there are fansubbers out there doing this great stuff for us non-natives. keep up the good work! -
