chanced on gurren lagann ep1 while tv surfing. and i'm dumbfounded... a robot head mecha?!? i know many of you guys are raving about this show, but i just have to ask: does it get better? or is this just an elaborate group joke for the uninitiated? i mean, that camino guy is possibly more annoying than basara.

over the weekend i really got tempted to buy a v2 VF-1D just for the pilot figures. fortunately i didn't have much cash on me at the time and was too lazy to look for an ATM. i'm holding out in the hope that someone will make 1/60 figures to go with this kit (paging petar..), or perhaps recast. if someone is willing to sell their VF-1D figures, PM me. i'm also wondering, are pilot figures also covered in yamato's replacement program?

oh, a little less than a pack a day, perhaps more on night outs. thing is, smokes are insanely expensive in singapore (about S$12 a pack, x8-x10 from my home country). a vanilla v2 VF-1 can be had here for about S$150.

i suppose i've been fortunate that i haven't really needed a toy budget. i see something i like, i pick it up. though i need not make trade-offs my mind starts running value equations: is the quality there? does it look worth X $'s? what other 'wants' can i buy for that price? can i get it somewhere cheaper? admittedly, the "but it's just so cool" thought often trumps the others and i end up at the counter or clicking the checkout button more often than i should. still, i find it worthwhile to equate toys to everyday life as a form of sanity check: how many lunches, how many movie dates, how many gym classes... and while writing this i came to a realization: if i quit smoking, i can buy a valk roughly every other week. now the question is if..

arrrgh! now i have to buy the VF-1D. darn you for bringing up that possibility!

i second that. i have a first release alto and want to know if the armor pack will be compatible with it before i click on the pre-order.

i'm just glad were getting another macross movie after two decades, even if the material is not entirely new. not bothered at all with reusing footage as the source material is pretty good if perhaps a bit uneven in terms of polish (which is one thing i think they'll definitely address in a condensed movie). it's not like they're reusing SDF footage for a DYRL production. i'm thinking that even if the amount of new scenes is limited, they may nonetheless prove pivotal in improving the flow of the story and/or provide that extra level of development for the aspect of the series they want to capture in the movie. think of director's cut versions of some movies which have benefitted (or otherwise) from just a few scenes changed or added. bladerunner and kingdom of heaven comes to mind. if anything, i don't want them to be too ambitious about changing or creating new stuff particularly if they are going on the re-telling route. i would rather they focus on telling a tighter more coherent story.

thanks, alfye. my bad, it was indeed a lancia. your work is amazing! and where did you get those buildings?! clear VF-25 were released a few months ago and promptly sold out within a few days. so they are now only available via auction sites. i cannot translate japanese, but i imagine those links you posted are not for pre-orders but for immediate sale.

Subtitle Workshop may just be what i'm looking for. unfortunately, i don't think re-timing will be as simple as shifting the start time. the THORA video is ripped from the BD while the gg versions are from the broadcast and they have different play times (for one thing, the BD rip excludes the commercial breaks)and some scenes in the BD have been extended.

ok, after more than a couple of months in gerwalk, i finally worked up the guts to transform VF-1S Hiky to battroid (thanks to VF-1S Max, which for some reason had just the right amount of "give" in the locking tabs and connectors). now that he's in battroid, i want to put him in that alpha-strike pose when he shot bodolza, but i can't get the guns to line up. has anyone managed this pose? pics? thanks

just got 20 and 21 (i don't know why i keep buying these things) naturally, i expected more than what was actually in there. in particular, i was hoping for interior shots/lineart of the asuka aircraft hangar. doubt if the asuka will be touched on again, but here's to hoping.. on another note, great mechanics DX8 is out and has an MF feature again. anybody has this already and found it worthwhile?

picked up my Max1S pre-order at my usual store and chanced upon their last VF-11B. cute shopkeeper gave it to me at their pre-order price of $170 i have to say, i am totally impressed with this toy. everything locks solid, and looks good in any mode. about my only nitpick is that i can't get the rear landing gears out. perhaps i'll try to fish it out with a bent paperclip edit: finally managed to get the rear landing gears out. also had to use a cutter blade to pry open on the front landing gear doors. fingernails alone didn't suffice. now that the landing gears are deployed, noticed that one on the rear is a tad shorter so the plane isn't perfectly level. but these are very minor nitpicks. i rarely play/transform my valks, but this one is just so solid that it just goads you into swooshing it around, even holding it by the magnetically attached leg fastpacks. and the transformation was very intuitive, i just can't help but play with it. and that comes from someone who's a scaredy cat when it comes to transforming expensive toys. for me at least, this is the best yamato valk thus far.

crossed my fingers and tried an mkv file. no dice unfortunatetly. it seems my just already 5 months old series8 is now obsolete. there now appears to be updated versions of the series6 and 7 with new functionality not found in my jurassic tv oh well, time to build a new HTPC...

eh? i have a series8 and no mention in the manual of mkv capability. have you tried it? would be cool if it did work.

did you mean choose what subs are displayed eg. only dialogue subs but not the karaoke? or did you mean edit the dialogue text? i'm hoping it's the latter. been watching the THORA BD versions and while they look amazing, i find myself preferring the gg subs translation, so combining the two would be double win for me. i heard though that i can't just use the gg subs file to go with the THORA release since the timings are probably different, and even if knew how to do script re-timing, i wouldn't want to go through that time-consuming method. so what i was thinking was, if the THORA softsubs were editable, i would keep their timings and just cut and paste the gg script. i have absolutely no idea whether this is feasible so appreciate if you can enlighten me on that. thanks edit: btw, has anyone heard any news if gg has plans of going to go back and doing the earlier episodes?

just finished watching Michiko to Hatchin. watched the first ep some months ago and left it at that. when i started watching ep2 last night, it was because i just wanted to see michiko again because she was so hot. ended up doing a marathon and couldn't quite figure out why i couldn't stop, nor why at the end of it i decided i liked the series. perhaps because the latin american setting was atypical for anime? or the simplicity of the plot was refreshing? or that it blurred the lines between kids and adults? though the ending leaves the possibility of a sequel, i'm pretty sure i don't want one. but for whatever it offered in these 22 episodes, i'm glad i watched it.
