nippon-yasan came through and i've just received my 29 today. first time to order from them, so i got a bit worried when it went past the usual 2 weeks delivery time
-
<shivers> weather-sealed camera notwithstanding, that gives me pause . i'm clumsy around tripods and in just my previous trip (no pun intended), i've bumped into it a number of times and had it nearly topple twice. i tend to get caught up in the scenery and become oblivious to where the legs are. here's one example: M6012204 by scroogee, on Flickr it's a crap shot but i kept it because it kinda looked like an itano circus

love this! very much prefer the natural look. haven't done any coastal shots, so i'm curious: do you actually get your tripod in the water or zoom in?

there's always the next festival! you might be encouraged to pick up a fast lens too. you'll need it if you want to use motion-freezing shutter speed in that kind of light. looks like you're patience paid off. good shots! i never could manage to sneak up on these critters had some time today to go through some of the pics i took in the last couple of weeks. i averaged about 250 shots/day and quite pleased my shot count has drastically fallen, as well as the % of crap shots (misfocused, over/under exposed, too slow shutter speed). there's still a good chunk though where i was like, "WTF was i thinking!", and of course the obligatory pic of/with gf and/or her friends. bottom line, a lot of pictures to sort through and it's really getting tedious doing it with Windows Photo Viewer. yet another reason to get Lightroom... anyway, some pics from the land of paella, tapas, and sangria!

like a little girl. october can't come soon enough..
-
why oh why did you focus on the woman in front and not the pretty young lady with a parasol and dimples behind her? other than that, nice pics that convey the energy of the festival. i imagine the lighting situation must've been tricky.

i started with a Canon myself (Powershot S5) back in '07, lured by "12x megazoom", "22 scene modes" and "high ISO". Was quickly disappointed when i brought it to Angkor Wat, fine for exterior shots, terrible at handling the contrasts of light and shadow once inside. granted i was a noob then and probably could've worked it more, and indeed i fared slightly better in my subsequent jaunt through Vietnam. but still, i couldn't get over the fact that the white balance looked greenish indoors, and i never could get the blurred backgrounds/selective focus that i thought that camera would allow me. that put me off photography for a couple of years until the Olympus PEN came along. got the E-PL1 and instantly fell in love with it. all this time i was avoiding DSLRs because of the associated bulk, but when i started hitting the limitations of the PEN (focus speed/accuracy and dynamic range) i gave in and got a Nikon D7000. loved the variety of fast, constant-aperture zooms but 9 cities and a sore back later, i started bringing it less and less. i was also starting to miss the Olympus colors and art filters so i went back to a compact and the Olympus XZ-1 became my go-anywhere camera. Now with the Olympus E-M5 i get the best of both worlds, DSLR image quality with far less weight and bulk. In retrospect i can see i'm going directionally opposite to the features which lured me to my first camera: i'll take wide angle vs. zoom reach anyday, PASM controls over scene modes, and low ISO whenever possible. thanks! a tripod does wonders! that is just so cool! i read up on it and apparently it won't happen again in this lifetime

just got back. Olympus E-M5, out of camera jpegs and for the parting shot, someone who's clearly had too much champagne during the Moulin Rouge show:

so i take it, this DX Basara Sheryl is smaller than the typical 1/6~1/7 scale of the Ichiban Kuji line? if so, then d@mn
-
for me, VF-25 wins by default because i can't yet get my hands on a YF-29 i wonder if any of the pre-orders have re-opened..

i'd like a book on the capital ships, with deck plans of the key ships and vicinity maps for the city vessels

love the bold blue, white, red colors on the model contrasting with the blurred pastel background. btw, is she Pinay? and was that red strap peeking intentional? it strangely works to offset the shirt. she's an angel, isn't she? spot on advice about waiting for the light, and this shot of yours is a great example of that i'd hazard a guess that i probably take more pictures with my point&shoot camera than with either of my DSLRs, simply because i have it with me far more often and it has ably seen me through a number of fleeting photographic opportunities. as they say, the best camera in the world is the one you have with you. here's another shot from my P&S. given how mundane the subject is, i was forced to compose to make it at least look interesting (hopefully i've succeeded). the Pinoys in this forum might recognize it and can probably attest that it is not the most inspiring of locations Olympus XZ-1 P2030062 by scroogee, on Flickr thanks. nowhere near as good as yours but happy to learn from your example. in fact i can probably blame you for making me want to get Lightroom. can i send you the bill? i've just found this site which convinced me to delve into post-processing: http://www.chromasia.../online/curves/ indeed, that's the best first step you can take. just take it step by step and don't forget to enjoy. switch it to auto-ISO then turn that dial to aperture mode. have fun with depth of field. then switch to shutter priority and experiment with motion blur. and finally, take it off auto-ISO and finesse your image quality (i'm still working on this part myself) one tip i can share is that when you're out with your camera on a sunny day, wear sunglasses with polarized lenses. they'll make everything look wonderful and inspire you to take pictures! lol, they are lovely blossoms though, and good color on the pics. shame that they won't be around by the time the complete 1:1 VF-25 will be exhibited. guess i have to plan for the cherry blossoms next year.

doh! so simple. <smacks forehead>. thanks. let me try it out with photos from my compact camera: Olympus XZ-1 28-112/f1.8-2.2

thanks! edit: btw, how do you post pics so that when clicked it takes you to flickr? i didn't know that either. guess i haven't bumped into that cap myself, but then again i happily shoot at ISO200-400. any lower and my girlfriend would be tapping her feet so cute!
-
ah, i didn't know about that 30s cap on your camera. i understand now. looking forward to more spectacular shots from you. as for me, i had a year or so dalliance with Nikon, but now i am back to my first love, Olympus. i've only had the Olympus E-M5 a few weeks but in that time she has thoroughly impressed me. looks like i my Nikon D7000 will end up in the cabinet, at least until F1 weekend comes around. sharing a some shots, all camera jpegs. i really gotta learn Lightroom and post-processing... awesome nightscapes vegas! checked the EXIF and was quite surprised at the relatively large apertures you were using. curious on your rationale -- noise control, or perhaps to avoid starbursts?

different tastes i guess. i actually make it a point to grab some burger steak and rice nearly every single time i have a business trip to manila.

just stumbled upon this: http://www.collectiondx.com/article/armarauders_%E2%80%93_new_mecha_toy_line_and_comic_mecha_workshop looks cool. hope it happens.

perhaps because you're shooting at the extreme wide-angle range of your zoom? try backing away and zoom a bit. strange though, since the verticals look straight.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Major Focker replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
got hooked on Fairy Tail as well. was just casually watching it whenever i catch it on animax. next thing i knew i was looking up further episodes online. an impromptu marathon later, and i'm up to ep123 and have to wait weekly for the next episode. so went and read the manga and got to ch276, gotta wait till friday for my next fix... maybe i'll try onepiece which seems similar. given fairy tail's apparent popularity, i'm surprised it doesn't already have a line of PVC figures. Erza alone has a multitude of costumes, so whoever picks up the license will certainly not be short of options or opportunities. -

Major Focker replied to dreadpyrat's topic in Movies and TV Series
seriously considering heading to japan for this, do any of those dates coincide (+/- 1 week) with a wonderfest or some other toy convention, or maybe even some other cool non-toy related festival? right now i'm thinking of osaka then perhaps hop over to tokyo or wherever if there was some other event. any advise appreciated.- 291 replies
