question on Yahoo Japan Auctions
Major Focker replied to Major Focker's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
thanks for clarifying that point on the highest bidder. as for the quantity part, i kinda figured it out by experimentation. there was an auction that said 2 available with a current bid of JPY1000. i bid 1050 and won. but when i checked the bid history, it says there are 2 highest bidders: me and the guy who bid 1000. what i noticed though is that there is also a column in the bid history which shows the quantity. in this case, the other guy apparently bid for 2 and says his bid is at 1000. so presumably, that means he bid for 2 units at 1k each. but since i bid for 1 (apparently) at 1050, i will get that one unit, and the other guy gets one at 1k. so now i'm pretty certain i'm not getting both at a total of 1050 (as i thought), and instead just one. cost me $6 in proxy fees, but i'll just charge that to experience. in contrast, another auction i won indicated quantity available =1, but there were 3 of the same item pictured and the description said for 3 units. so that one, i won all three at the price i entered in the bid. i was charged that price as a total, and not x3. this seems to be consistent with other past auctions where multiples of the item where shown and described, but indicated quantity was set at 1 in the upper summary box. so in summary, it seems that when a seller wants to sell something as a set, they indicate the available quantity as 1, then in the description they state how many multiples of the item are in the set. if the seller is not selling multiples as a set, they indicate available quantity to whatever they have on hand, and bidders are expected to indicate how many they want and the price they are bidding for each. something to be mindful of when buying from YAJ. so i guess this thread can be closed, unless some folks have other questions about YAJ. happy to share my experiences with various proxy services, as well as tips, though i am by no means an expert. p.s. is it wrong that i'm tempted to get another meltrandi ship? -
RuRouni Kenshin Live Action RuRouni Kenshin [Samurai X]
Major Focker replied to EXO's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
i've had my fill of gritty/realistic adaptations (or films in general, seems to be the fad these days). so i actually find it quite refreshing that this Kenshin movie did NOT take itself too seriously. not that i would terribly mind if they make a more serious Kenshin movie based on the OVAs, but if they do make a sequel for the Shishio arc, i hope they stick to this current formula, but maybe just a tad darker. maybe those like me who prefer the Kenshin series to the OVAs are the minority, but then again maybe not. there are specific anime i would watch if i wanted a mindf*ck, and with those i would demand serious treatment for an adaptation (eg. GitS but maybe not Appleseed).- 79 replies

let me state upfront that i am not pro-NY. i think what they do is to break up their allocations into 3 or 4 batches of preorders, unlike HLJ or amiami which lets them rip in one go. from NY's perspective, the motivation could be driven by maximizing margins vs. risking non-moving stock. they start with a low price, either retail or discounted, until that batch sells out. then they inch up the price until that next batch sells out. if it doesn't sell out then that means they've gone beyond the price elasticity and are likely to either keep the remaining batches at that price, or perhaps even lower it if they sense that they've overstretched the elasticity, such as the case with the VF-4G. the side effect is that their preorders comes out multiple times and at different times of the day, allowing more people a better chance at securing preorders. so whether they intended this side-effect, their approach inadvertently becomes pro-collector whilst they make additional margins. seems like a win-win for free market economics. of course, the ideal case is that they and other retailers proactively breakup their allocations into batches without going beyond retail price. but that has no incentive for the retailer and in turn they assume more risk: why defer some of your preorders and risk some sales to default to other competitors? it's the markup that balances this, in a twisted, but logical kind of way. so long as the markup doesn't approach scalper levels, it seems like a sensible approach. and ultimately, it's the market which will determine what is "scalper price". if no one buys from scalpers for long enough, those will come down too.

need some help. i'm hunting down some stuff on YAJ, and sometimes i encounter auctions where instead of the usual "Number: 1", it shows a higher number, as in the example below where it shows "3". does this mean that if i'm the highest bidder, i win 3 units of that item? or does it simply mean there are 3 available and each winning bid gets one? also, what does the line "The highest bidder: No" mean? appreciate some clarification. thanks 詳細情報 個数 : 3 開始時の価格 : 1,000 円 最高額入札者 : なし More info Number : Three Starting price : 1,000 yen The highest bidder : No

i still see a few of them at local shops. didn't check the price though. i'm guessing between $250-$300 you can tell him that if he does it, i promise to treat him to all the chicken rice and bak kut teh he can eat if he ever drops by SG

since you're on speaking terms with NY's owner, maybe you could ask him to give MW a 12-hour heads up when they're about to list the RVF-25?

Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim'
Major Focker replied to fifbeat's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
is it just me, or is it now mandatory for trailers to have that loud, low pitched, fog-horn sound either at the start or end? which movie started that fad? getting tired of it now.- 1206 replies

thanks. it's supposed to be about 31cm (12"). just got note from the proxy service that it is enroute to their warehouse. will probably wait another couple of weeks before i ask them to forward to me, just in case some other interesting stuff show up on YAJ. resin pieces are indeed likely to be solid unless they were designed from the get-go to be light-able (eg. scale solutions super star destroyer, trifon nebuchadnezzar). so either one carves out the inside, or recasts the pieces to be hollow. which is why i'm looking to commission since i don't have the equipment for casting.

can i ask for a re-up of the build up thread pdfs? thanks

what's wrong with that? a good chunk of my collection i bought purely on the merit of looks/design without any idea who they are or what series they're from. sometimes i look them up and eventually watch the anime, but more often than not, i'll just find out the series name (so i can check if there are other interesting figures from that series) and to this day still have no idea what the anime is about. some examples: - Kaori Kanzaki - Nonnon - Isoroku Yamamoto - Saber Lily Avalon - Hitagi Senjougahara - Moka Akashiya - etc.

that's the 3A version which is ~1/48(?) and not Kotobukiya which is 1/100

i want the multi-legged tank too. seems to be called "Takemikazuchi" according to google translate. can't seem to track it down though since apparently a number of other anime robots/ships also have that name. if this is the Yamato ship you're interested in, here's the auction link: http://page7.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/g122307475 this is the ship i want, but don't know the name. seems to be from gundam though:

if i do decide to build it myself, then yes, why not. TBH, i was initially thinking of commissioning someone to build it, partly because i want it lighted. anyone got pics of this ship showing where the lights are? i recall it was daylight when it was shown in DYRL. found their website btw (http://mrdtop.web.fc2.com/news_f.html) and pleasantly surprised the model is bigger (31cm) than i thought. they also have a bunch of other cool models, including a VA-1SS Siren. now if only there was a direct way to buy them...

Major Focker replied to EXO's topic in Anime or Science Fiction

Medicom/Hot Toys and all 1/6 scale figures
Major Focker replied to EXO's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
need some advise. someone's trying to sell me the Iron Man Suit Up Gantry at a bit of a discount, but i'm not sure which Iron Man models it is compatible with. i have the first release of the MkIII which i think don't have removable armor panels, but please correct me if i'm wrong. it's in storage now, so i can't check. so which Iron Man models have removable panels? ie. so that it would make sense to display it in the gantry? -
2013 Challenge - Who is going to do it?
Major Focker replied to sreichma's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
why not in scale with most legioss ie 1/48? or how about 1/35, the de facto armor scale? but honestly, i just want a hovertank (actually, several of them) in any scale. -
not a Trekkie, but i like that design. caught wind of it at the SSM forums. at supposedly 1:500, i'm probably one of the few who are hoping it is not too big in actual finished size.

does it come in HD? man, that made me want to go back to bangkok...

mine just arrived. still deciding whether to open it or wait to resell if an FB2012 repaint is announced. bet i'll fail that marshmallow test though.
