Star Destroyer to end all Star Destroyers
Major Focker replied to Mr March's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
the Anigrand SD is 1:2256 which i think is the biggest "kit" of the subject that i'm aware of. the only other bigger kit is that of the Executor SSD at 38". bigger SD's are out there, but they are scratchbuilds. i think i got mine for under $200 during an Anigrand sale. i still see $300-350 popping up occasionally on ebay and yahoo auctions japan, some from the same sellers who've previously posted them at 400+. the real shame is that Anigrand got the C&D when they were just weeks away from releasing the 1/144 Turbo Tank. at least the 1/144 Rebel Transport got through in the nick of time, just like in the movies- 31 replies

+1 on contrast ratio. not too worried about color accuracy though as the baseline quality on current models is already pretty good. viewing angle is also already pretty good across the board. instead i would look at screen reflectivity, particularly if ambient lighting and sources cannot be controlled in the room. a lot of screens still opt for glossy surface which enhances brightness, but is pretty damn annoying when you can see other room light sources to the side or behind you reflected on the screen, specially when watching dark scenes. the other thing i check is the evenness of the LED/LCD backlighting. either put on a black test screen or just turn on the TV without any source inputs. the screen should be completely black except maybe for a couple of dialog boxes, and you can then check for light leaks, particularly at the corners and edges, as well as if there are patches that are noticeably brighter (ie. dark grey instead of completely black. you can also do the same test to check for stuck/bright pixels. usually the delivery guys and their tech support would use very bright scenes to show you that the set is fine. unfortunately, it's only when you watch your first dark scene that you will notice stuck pixels. on mine was a single pixel stuck on red, unfortunately on my biggest tv, but fortunately close to the edge where it's less bothersome. still annoying occasionally because i know it's there, and i would've much preferred a dead pixel rather than a stuck one. -

you do have a point. if i wasn't so fond of the character, i'd agree with you, in particular that ep7-10 had a bigger emotional payload. relatively speaking, ep20 was one of the weaker endings in the current season, but still a good ep overall in terms of Bakemono lore.

finally, an Erza figure worth buying. while not the best of sculpts, it is certainly much much better than previous attempts. and it's 1/8 =)

finally caught up after a long trip. kinda ironic that while i was in Kyoto, i occasionally thought of going home so i can watch Monogatari. regret being spoiled about the ending of the Shinobu Time arc, but it was very moving nonetheless. i also have a vague idea about how this last story arc will end, but i think it will still be surprising (at least the how's) for me given that Kaiki is involved. he's turning out to be even more interesting than Meme, albeit perhaps not as cool, but also cool in his own way. so Shinobu Time did take 4 eps, and i'm glad Koimonogatari started immediately after and looks to have 5 eps. more Senjougahara is always better. got a feeling though that we might be in for a surprise in the last half or last third of the season ender episode. maybe a preview of sorts, or some kind of wrap-up.

This 1/60 custom is going to be bigger than I thought!

ooh, when will you be taking orders? i'm in for a 1/350, and if you do 1/700 i'd want a couple as well. -
are these shapeways models scalable? like, can i ask for a 1/350 and 1/700 print?
-
nice! it says 25mm, so 1/72?

i didn't say that i agreed with how they ended the movie, just stating that it was written to sustain the tension through to the end and have a climactic punchline. indeed 2199 ended as it should, but how they meandered through the last episode could've been done better -- even without any additional body count.

i'm probably going to get lynched for saying this, but i think the live action movie had a more impactful ending than 2199. i can't put my finger on it, maybe it was the director or maybe it was the screenplay, but the last episode just felt a bit anticlimactic in some ways. there was a lot of emotional moments for sure, but there was no more struggle, no more tension, no more fighting against their fates, just the drama of coping with it. the important characters no longer had a say on whether their ending would be a a tragedy or whether they could still could do something, a sacrifice if necessary, to fight for their happy ever after.

Araragi's on a roll! i wonder what's with this new habit of theirs playing the credits 4/5 of way rather than at the end? in ep10, credits played in the background with 5mins to go as the episode continued uninterrupted. it made sense then, because it was sort of an epilogue to the story arc. in ep15, there was 2 mins after the credits which again made sense because it was an epilogue/preview of sorts. now in ep 17, it's nearly 4 mins of material post credits. and i can't think of a good reason this time except

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Major Focker replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
i was looking for Kantai Collection anime and ended up finding Arpeggio instead. first episode was ok. will reserve comments until i'm further in. i didn't know Kantai was a card game. in any case, an anime adaptation is supposedly in the works for 2014. -
Live Action Space Battleship Yamato

IIRC, that was a custom using the Yamato 2199 1/1000 kit, which in turn was the basis of the live action movie.- 450 replies
