Revenge of the Sith has been seen!
Blaine23 replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Sweet. Hopefully it's as good as Smith says it is... however, this is the guy that made Jersey Girl. Actually, he's been a pretty honest critic of the prequels thus far and his favorite SW film is Empire... so I guess I believe him. But I'm still going into the theater with lowered expectations... as much as I want to believe this film kicks all kind of monkeyanus... I've been... <sniff> hurt before.. -
What has George Lucas done with his life?
Blaine23 replied to ComicKaze's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Which of us is more likely to have a "lightsaber wet dream"? I'm guessing it's you, dude. If you think SW is Lucas' "passion and love", then you might be a bit too romantically attached to it. Weak sauce? Are you a "strong sauce" fanboy? Did we invent new sauce-related slang while I was sleeping? -
Star Wars TV Series set between Ep 3 and 4
Blaine23 replied to Magnus's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You guys DO understand that this is a TV show, right? There will be several different directors and they'll all have names you've never heard of, because most of us don't really pay attention to the "directed by..." credit on a TV show. Average TV show eps per season - 22. Yeah, you'll get a movie director doing all of that... If he's involved in any way (which I haven't really heard that he is other than stupid fanboy rumor) - he'd likely be onboard with scripting or some sort of producing credits. BTW - can anyone truly be "smartly overrated?" Also, the true opposite of entertaining is Carrot Top. Get your facts right, man! -
What has George Lucas done with his life?
Blaine23 replied to ComicKaze's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Personally, I don't think much of Lucas as a director or a screenwriter. Lucas really is a story concept artist. He took special effects to where they are today mainly by not giving up and pushing the envelope. As a writer, he comes up with great ideas that translate into great visuals. Really to me, Lucas is what I'd think of as a super-producer. Ultimately, he's not that much different than a Jerry Bruckheimer. He finds incredible art talent, manages it all effectively, and really has made so much of his money from having made smart deals with Star Wars. Back in '77, it was pretty much assumed that SW would be a huge flop and Lucas took marketing rights over money. This isn't a decision that a Spielberg or a Coppola would have made. A screenwriter writes good dialogue. Lucas isn't that guy. He's got a pretty tin ear in that regard. A director controls a film set, interprets the script, and directs actors. Lucas can pull off the first two okay... but on the 3rd, he's just terrible. Often we like to blame wooden performances on actors (and quite often they deserve it), but a director who doesn't work with well with actors will get terrible reads. Combine bad scripting with bad dialogue... and you get Anakin. Lucas is a visionary in many, many ways... he's done a great deal with his life and he's got quite a few achievements under his belt. But there's a reason he's not really considered a great director, like Spielberg or Coppola or any others in his generation - that reason is that he's more suited concepting and effects more than he enjoys actual acting and story. You can't compare the work he's done as director and screenwriter with works like The Godfather or Schindler's List. It just doesn't hold up. -
I'm with Wes... not only do I never really care enough about this stuff to buy it at launch... but I'm also surprised at how many people care about what the exterior looks like. No offense to the designers, etc... but every damn console I've ever seen has a power button, an input tray (or cartridge for those of you who remember way back yonder), controller ports and memory cartridge areas. To be really honest, this XBox 360 isn't all that much different than every game console since the Atari 5200. It's just smaller. And shinier. Whee.

The shoulders definitely look padded. My mom used to wear shoulder pads like that in the 80's.

Keeler gets excited about presidential takeovers the same way Jack gets thrilled when he gets a chance to break the law and hurt someone terribly for the greater good. You just know Jack has probably done that lamp cord volt shock at a party when someone lied about running out of beer. And Keeler likely tells any VP to invoke the 25th amendment whenever the president has a cold. President Prissypants definitely bugs. Maybe the badassedness of Palmer can straighten him out.

Dude, maybe I'm weird or something (okay, I'm sure I am)... but I think as far as preproduction sketches go... they look fantastic. I mean, you have to consider that preproduction sketches are pretty good ways away from finished film. The purpose of them is simply to define a world, get a feel for the look they're going for, etc. Costume designs, robot designs, settings - all of that changes dramatically once made to look "real" with CGI. WETA's a quality shop. If this movie had sucked nuts, it certainly wouldn't be their fault, IMO. It's the acting, script, and direction that is really hard to believe in for a project like this one. Anime to live action is going to happen, whether fans want it to or not. I think Evangelion would be a better choice than alot of the other anime I've watched simply because, for all it's weirdness, it is essentially a human story set in a world that is recognizable.

it just me or robot chicken not funny...
Blaine23 replied to NERV's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
See, the weird thing is that I actually really enjoy Twisted Mego Theatre... but I find Robot Chicken to be largely unfunny. I watched a few eps at a friend's house and there's always one funny bit amongst 8 million that just don't do anything. The Super villain carpool got a laugh out of me. The pentagram for calling forth the Great Pumpkin made laugh so hard it hurt. Everything else... yawn. I think I enjoyed the Mego Theatre more because it did attempt to build on a premise and it wasn't just a 10 second clip of a toy peeing or something. TMT actually makes me just look at old megos and laugh... whereas Robot Chicken I think is waaaaay too scattershot and trying to be less in-jokey. Some of the TMT stuff really requires a pretty thorough knowledge of toys and comic fandom. Robot Chicken seems to be trying to be more accessible. Thus, it fails. -
Hmmm... I'm pretty sure Oprah wasn't one of the things that is "best in life"... Crom might be angry with such girlie ways, A1. Of course, Oprah can talk about whatever she wants but if Howard Stern says fart he gets fined a million dollars. Silly FCC. My wife has always been cool about my toys... since we moved in together the rule's always been that I keep my toys, computer and guitars in my space (office) and she can do whatever the hell else she wants with decorating the rest of the house. As far as anime goes - she loves Miyatake, enjoyed Akira and GITS - but she's not really into watching anything longer than a few hours. I keep trying to get her to watch Evangelion and she always says, "is that the one I saw 10 minutes with that Minmay chick?" She's quite open to enjoying geek entertainment and she's a voracious reader - but she draws the line at anything resembling supergeekdom. No cosplay, no wall art, etc. Closet geek, as it were. I dig that about her.

I swear I was watching this last night and Jack Bauer's face lit up like a 700v christmas tree when he found out there was one more chance to both break the law and torture someone. That Keifer is quite an actor. Gravitas, indeed.

Online RPG? Nope. I'll stick to playing Rastan. That's was fun.

For some reason I imagine the Europe song "Final Countdown" being the theme for the movie. And for some reason if cracks me up... maybe because its GOB's theme in Arrested Development. Heh, it was the ringer on my cellphone until 3 days ago. Love me some GOB. "I've made a huge mistake..."

Agent Ones I AM truly at home, between a woman's legs. I thought you were only at home when you were drinking mead from the skull of your most recent enemy, A1. -
There are people that love Jar Jar? Yes there are. Unfortunately, these people are also 3 feet high and make shooey in their Pampers. Then cry until their parents buy them things. (No, I'm not talking about Hurin... I'm talking about little children, you sickos. ) Chewbacca is the single greatest thing in the SW universe. And I'm 31. Scary, eh? Ewoks at least sort of fit in the story, even if they are a giant unsettling break from the epic scale of the story already in progress... but to be fair, Han, Leia & Co. got stuck on their little Playskool Moon of Endor and had to make do. With Jar Jar, however, we're supposed to believe that this alien jackass was actually useful enough to a couple of Jedi knights so that he could hang around for an entire movie... nobody believes that.

Spawn the Animation is back!
Blaine23 replied to terry the lone wolf's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Spawn Season 1 on HBO was alot of fun to watch. But then again, I think Keith David's voice was just perfect for the character. I pretend the actual Spawn movie doesn't exist, like the Highlander sequels. -
I totally dissagree. Events would have played out more or less the same if neither was there, the result of both of their actions are what played into saving the world. Yeah, but you gotta admit that Gendo was a complete dick.

Yeah, but he had the power of Colt 45 on his side! Never underestimate the power of malt liquor... it indeed works every time. But you have good points about Lucas' writing and it's weaknesses. But I have to say this cracked me up for a good 10 minutes: Hee. Anakin needs a blog. And a collection of emo cd's. And not that it's any kind of honor - but Jemstone's right - Edo was the lord emporer king diety of long-winded posting.

That's 'cause y'all talk so durn funny. And whats with that blood pudding? Seriously...that's just disgusting. The Office was brilliant. And not only am I American, I live in Tennessee. If that's not a ringing endorsement for the universality of good British humor, nothing is. Of couse, we're not exactly typical rednecks either - we did get married in Paris and honeymooned in London. Several of our friends love the show and won't give us back our DVDs. All that being said... I still hated the food in England. Except for the fish. Fish was excellent. I think Bill Hicks said it best - "you don't boil pizza!" And yeah, it's sad, but I'm probably only going to give this movie the benefit of the doubt because I like Tim and Rockwell.

Word. Having reviewed this thread... still shaking my head at Hurin and Haterist pointing out the futility of long winded no-point argument (my little ones have all grown up now! )... I have to say that you just got to let it all go, Majestic. For example - BSU and I couldn't disagree more fervently over the Star Wars franchise. I love the old, original version films and he's down with the new stuff. We'll both express our opinions and point out when the other might be wrong, and makes jokes at the other camp's expense all the time... Let everyone have their own opinion and quit trying to "win" - it's pointless. Some people are going to agree with you, some are going to agree with him. A very select few will agree with AgentONE. Now, can't we all agree that wookies are like, the most kickass race in the universe?

Beiruz: What are you going to do to me? Where is my mother? I want answers! Marwan: Ummmm..... yeah. Beiruz: What's that mean? Marwan: We plan to kill you and torture and all kinds of other stuff... but I've got some other stuff to do first. Beiruz: Oh. Waitaminute, what other stuff? Marwan: Capture a nuke. Then detenate it or something. Then I still have some reading I wanted to catch up on - this month's modern terrorist cell weekly. Oooh! And I'm also supposed to do that Pub Trivia on Wedensday, so that's out of the question... then it's time for the annual terrorist cell mixer and family picnic. But I promise, I'll get to you eventually, Beiruz. Beiruz: Uh...

Well, he was a giant in armor in the prelude of FoTR. But, it's not exactly as though he was much more than an eye in the books. Sauron, though cool, is not the most active of villains.

HAHA, I am a Cimmerian. My God is Crom and he lives in the Earth. I see Arnold as a prophet of Crom, or God if you want to call him that. The way I see it, I think there either is more than one god, Crom being one of them, or Crom is just the face of God that is meant for the most awesomely powerfull people on Earth. But either way... CROM laughs at your four winds! True dat. To be fair, though... Crom seems to have about as much influence on the universe as Jobu from Major League. And BSU - I thought about including the orgies, then decided that was actually not all that evil and just very 70's. Except for the soup. That's just nasty.
