The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread

Why do people like Fans Toys? For one, as I think you were alluding to, Quakewave was a great toy for its time. People noticed. Their MP-scaled dinobots arrived after that, and Fans Toys has been improving each of them as they go along. I'd speculate that the aggressive nature of their dinobot schedule is what kept them from their other interesting projects (like Jetfire/Skyfire). I mean, outside of dinos they've released what? Tesla, Reflector, and their Insecticons. And some of those releases have been received with criticism, so I wouldn't say Fans Toys receives blind praise: Scoria is panned because of the QC issues in the hips. Depending on which version you get, the chrome may not match the other dinos. Telsa is panned because of the face sculpt, and not being G1 enough. I think this is silly, but what do I know? Forager is panned because of QC issues with the arm clasps Willis was delayed so that Fans Toys could fix an issue with the side mirrors. I have only two Fans Toys figures in my collection at the moment (with more on my pre-order list). Going by the numbers, I buy more MMC bots than any other third party. For quality, I would rank Fans Toys close to MMC, and they are also like MMC in that they include upgrades/incentives for older figures with their newer releases. Fans Toys may be trying to compete some with other company's announcements. Of course, it could be coincidence too. They haven't had much to announce aside from dinobots for a long time. Now, the new projects may start seeing the light.- 9128 replies

Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar short film
technoblue replied to Dobber's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Thanks, Sildani. Reading through the highlights of the Games Workshop case gives me a positive vibe. It would be very cool if Winston & Strawn are able to win back some leniency for Axanar (and other fan-based works by proxy). I guess we will just have to wait and see.- 94 replies

Hm. Maybe it was a mistake of omission (or something I misread) in the EW article. It is odd that the preview series would go up on other sites like Youtube and Facebook, but that Hasbro wouldn't continue running the main series in those places as well.- 16669 replies

I'm not familiar with that review, but there are a handful of reviews available for Arcadia's YF-19 if you are looking for more than one opinion. The loose ankle issue that jenius notes in his review may not bother everyone, but it is useful information, especially if you have no experience with the previous Yamato *19 Valkyries. Here on the forum, you can do a quick search too, and you will find a number of fixes posted along with some easy workarounds.

Combiner Wars looks nifty, but is it really locked to a Verizon Wireless app? Why not put it on one of the larger sites like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon? Re: Inferno I love that we have so many choices to buy an MP-scale Inferno toy. He's like the Autobot version of Shockwave or something. The official Masterpiece looks to be one of Takara's best this year and that's going to make it difficult for me to stick with just one version. MMC's is appealing because of how it borrows details from his old Marvel Comics appearance. Both the comic and the toon aesthetic tend to draw me in. I'm not bothered by the clean legs. That was a minor nitpick for me with Iron Hide and Ratchet. For those two, I was more annoyed by the fact that Takara did the G1 toy face gimmick instead of figuring out a cool way to reduce the size of the chest/windscreen area in bot mode. Inferno has a very clever gimmick with the ladder, but it wasn't done at the expense of his bot-mode profile. Fantastic, really.- 16669 replies

Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar short film

Prelude to Axanar isn't what drew the ire of CBS/Paramount. It was all the fundraising and such that came after to continue the story... Axanar Teaser 1 "Stands United" Axanar Teaser 2 "Honor Through Victory"- 94 replies

No argument from me on that. It also could explain the fractures in the fan base over this case and how it ends.- 94 replies

Star Trek: Prelude to Axanar short film
technoblue replied to Dobber's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Maybe. I mean, I know what you're getting at, but then I question why the judge hasn't been quick to toss out the case in CBS/Paramount's favor? There seems to be more about this than what is out in the public eye at the moment. I do think that the fallout from the Axanar case will become precedent for future infringement rulings. The thing about the convenient and accessible nature of technology today is that I think more collisions between fans and rights holders are bound to happen.- 94 replies

The Axanar case is still in litigation. I'm guessing the public has only seen the extremes of what both sides want: Axanar's side and CBS/Paramount's side. Without all the legalese messing up public interpretation, the reality of what the court decides may end up being more of a compromise when all is said and done. Personally, I think CBS/Paramount has an uphill battle. They have allowed liberal production of fan works for years, decades even. It's hard to put that genie back into the bottle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_fan_productions To me, the saddest thing is how some are blaming the Axanar team for bringing down the infringement hammer. I think they just had the misfortune of having two good crowdfunding campaigns that put them above the radar. It made them the first scapegoat. But if Axanar hadn't been chosen, then someone else would have been all the same.- 94 replies

Not Max & Milia's, but Hikaru's 1J. At least, the assumption is that Bandai hasn't fixed the angles of the chest stripe based on the marketing photos. I guess we'll know definitively when it shows up in October.
-
I've been looking forward to this release since Bandai first teased the original HMR diorama a year-and-a-half back. I don't mind the color changes to the fast packs and super parts, either—they don't seem hateful to me. Rather, they look to be a playful way for Bandai to set these apart from the Yamato releases. I'm not surprised that there is also an animation cell that appears to back it up. So, I'm in for both Max and Milia's Valkyrie (I just need that pre-order date for Milia's).

Cool. So when are you going to watch Person of Interest? I mean, it isn't a show about the end of the world or a hero that saves the day. I would place the sci-fi westerns on your list into separate categories of science fiction. I loved Firefly/Serenity, but it isn't a modern-day sci-fi action thriller like Person of Interest. I don't know much about Hell on Wheels, but it looks like it has an interesting premise that is similar to Firefly with the western motif. Anyway...to each his or her own as the saying goes.

Ah! Thanks for clarifying that point on Maketoys. I wouldn't mind if they did branch off into other areas too, but I also wouldn't mind if they went back and built upon/improved some of their more interesting Transformer lines like the Battle Tanker series. It would be cool to see more armored bots. I have hope that they are going to do something like that with the Cross-Dimension line, which looks to be smaller than MP scale too. Evolution Toy, I think, needed more time smoothing out the kinks with the VF-2SS. It's a functional toy, sure, but it is another toy that really could use a v2 release. I do wonder what a veteran company might do with it, especially if Bandai decided to release that HMR variant it teased.- 9128 replies

Interesting. I didn't know that Maketoys was branching off in that direction. That might encourage me to pick up one or two of their combiners after all. I mean, if they are going to move away from Transformers and get into other products. I also miss seeing more releases in the battle tanker series. They were small and fun armored figures that I thought they would continue building up and improving. I probably would have done better waiting for the v2 Apollyon. I let my excitement for an MP-10 scaled 3P Megs get the better of me. The blocky look of Despotron doesn't bother me in the shadowy images, but I do want to see more detail before committing to it and I may wait for a review or two this time. I do think the alt mode looks a little better than X-Transbots alt mode, which I felt was too chunky unless it was dressed up with the scope, stock, and silencer/suppressor.- 9128 replies

I question whether the US price will be $100 when it gets stocked in stores down this way. There was a US listing posted on TFW in January that had a price more in line with MP Prowl. Here it is: http://news.tfw2005.com/2016/01/21/masterpiece-bumblebee-toys-r-us-listing-308158 Has the price changed that much? Or is this another case of Canada getting the short end of the TRU exclusive stick? I have no idea.- 16669 replies

Indeed. You're in for a fun ride. It was a breath of fresh air, and the characters had good actors with good writers to back them up. The final season Blu-ray is due out next month. I'll be picking that up, and then I'll add the whole series to my personal list of summer reruns.
-
I don't mind the colors, but I totally agree with you on the price. I'll be happy to add Max's 1J back into my collection at this scale. I can't wait for more news on Milia's too. It will be nice to have the pair again, albeit smaller than my old 1/48s. And, who knows? It's a long shot, but Arcadia could (maybe) figure a way out of its slump and release individual 1J M&M box sets with more accurate details at 1/60 scale? Then everyone will have more choices.

My v1 Apollyon is an okay 3P Megatron statue but it isn't a great transformer at all. There are just too many issues with my copy. Despotron looks sweet, and I'm curious to see what another company might do with an MP Megs (kind of like how I'm curious to see another company's take on the VF-2SS). And as much as I would love to see him released soon, I hope Maketoys takes the time to get it right.- 9128 replies

LoL. I'm already in withdrawal. Seriously, though, if they can make it work I'd be interested in a spin-off. I wonder where they would take the story next and if we would get a completely new cast? For tonight's episode, I was somewhat surprised. I was expecting more of a definitive ending after all the build up to it, but I was happy to see that they left a few strings dangling out there (a good thing that seems to support the rumor). I don't want to give away too much, but to me the ending was bitter sweet, even though it did its best to land the up beat instead of the down beat.
-
I'm looking forward to tonight's episode. It was fun while it lasted, and one of the best science fiction series that I've seen grace broadcast TV in a long while. It's a shame the good stuff gets shipped off early by the networks, but what can you do?

^That's a nice prototype. I wonder where it is in the schedule or if Fansproject intends to release the Horrorcons close together? I also took the advice posted here and found Code. Action Robo had a nifty deal on the Code:Virus repaint, and I'm often tempted by those alternate dark-color paint schemes so I started with that and Combes Robin. I'll let everyone know how things go. I'm looking forward to both.- 9128 replies

Great review. The third picture is my favorite. I've been reconsidering the supersized Headmasters that I have. With Maketoys, my fun factor is 50/50. I would say that Cupola and Iron Will are also not perfect, but on top of the usual niggles, I think the supersizing works against them creating more annoyances. For instance, Cupola uses ball joints in odd spots, limiting articulation in critical load bearing areas (like the feet). Iron Will has better execution overall, but includes an odd factory defect out of the box with the little Headmaster figure. It makes things looser than I would like when he is transformed into head mode. For a newbie, would you say that it is safe to jump right in on the Function X line or is it better to pick up a particular figure first? I do like how Fansproject seems a little more dedicate to releasing as many characters as they can as toys. Maketoys is already moving on to different things.- 9128 replies
