Neon Genesis EVANGELION General Thread
technoblue replied to no3Ljm's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Should you watch Rebuild? Yes, yes you should. Should you get into other Evangelion movies and media? Yes, yes you should. The three Rebuild films in your list are the ones that have been released, and that have been available on Blu-ray for a while now. I think they do have a well-regarded localized English dub and use the same voice actors from the anime (it's been a while, though; I'm more of a sub guy now). Hideaki Anno has been working on the fourth and final film, Evangelion 3.0+1.0, which is due to come out this year (baring any additional delays). No idea if there's a dub planned for the new film. I think the licensing for Evangelion in the US has changed hands in the interim. Not sure if you're also asking about plot points, though, especially those specific to instrumentality and what comes afterward. @Keith is guiding you in the right direction, if you are. There's a reason our mate has the Seele logo as his avatar. He knows his stuff.- 998 replies

It was a fun episode this week. This season has me on the edge of my seat with Camina Drummer and her path, even though it's not always center stage. Truly, I'm waiting for that shoe to drop, but I may have to wait until next season.

The Mandalorian - Star Wars webseries from Jon Favreau
technoblue replied to SMS007's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah. Disney is within its right if Gina stepped outside any predetermined rules while under contract. I don't see an issue with them letting her go either, but if they are feeling James Gunn gracious again, then I also don't see an issue if they keep her on in the role and just tell her to stop the nonsense tweets. I just wanted to stress that I can still appreciate what she's done, the ignorance about medical science and the global health emergency aside.- 1438 replies

Mm. This was something that let me see more of who Mira was behind the curtain, and it's a very nice personal story. I'm happy JMS was willing to share.

I guess I'm not one to let little things like this get my heckles up nowadays. I appreciated both Gina Carano's and Rosario Dawson's performance in the Mandalorian. I also appreciated Ashley Ekstein's performance as the voice of animated Ahsoka, and I don't see Disney deciding to go with someone else for these live-action scenes as a slight on her work. For me, it's more important that we still have Star Wars shows that are able to capture the magic of the original trilogy. I was an undergrad when the prequel trilogy hit the cinema. Perhaps I did my Star Wars grieving back then? Eh, I don't really need to revisit those thoughts on the low bar sequel movies or the youtube conspiracies, as entertaining as they can be at times—for me it ends up being distracting and nonsensical.- 1438 replies

Indeed. It is. It's also sad to see so many familiar B5 faces fade away. The show was epic, and the actors were excellent. Here is a link to JMS's memorial for Mira Furlan, which most probably have read by now. Reading it myself, I learned something about her that I hadn't known previously and so I'm sharing it to this thread for posterity.

Marvel Studios TV Shows and Animation on Disney+
technoblue replied to sh9000's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I’ve watched the first three episodes out of curiosity. I don’t really have the comic book knowledge to catch all the Easter Eggs, but I have been enjoying the twisted reality bits that this shares with similar media like The Truman Show/Dark City/Megazone 23 and so on. I do hope that the pace will pick up some, given how things ended in the latest episode. I mean, the writers now have a legitimate reason to switch the narrative away from Wanda’s perspective, if they want to. I guess we’ll see how it goes.- 1461 replies

What an odd thing to criticize. I mean, Boba isn’t on the poster either. Neither is Cobb Vanth from the first arc, the Mythrol, nor Mayfeld. Is there a written rule that every Star Wars poster needs to illustrate every character?- 1438 replies

Rumour has it that MP Hound will be getting released again soon, and this time without the dreadful quality lottery of the original release. I think mine is one of a very small percentage of first run figures without any cracks or breakages. That said, more often than not the plastic rivaled that of the brittle Yamato v2.0 Valkyries. It'll be good if Takara is making a fixed version available, so that more people can enjoy their take. On the subject of other MPs, one pleasant surprise was MP-51 Arcee. I wasn't expecting much from this release, especially after my depressing experience with Hasbro's ER Arcee—I just wanted a figure with an accurate alt mode to go with my copy of MMC Azalea. Colour me impressed when she turned out to be one of the most articulate and well put together Transformers in my collection. She's wowed many fans elsewhere, and is not one to miss if you can forgive nitpicks, IMO. Takara teased an official MP Skids recently too, but there's no prototype so who knows how far out it is in their schedule.- 16946 replies

HiDive is Sentai’s streaming service, and is legit. Sentai used to be ADV back in the day. With regard to physical discs, both Patlabor and Votoms were released on blu-ray, if you can play those. For instance, the Patlabor Ultimate Collection is still available at Sentai’s site, albeit on backorder right now. https://www.sentaifilmworks.com/products/patlabor-the-mobile-police-ultimate-collection-blu-ray

Season 13 is already filming, but real world events have cut the episode count down to 8 (reportedly). My guess is that we’ll get to see it broadcast/streaming sometime in the second half of the year. https://www.digitalspy.com/tv/a30762531/doctor-who-season-13-release-date/

Did they answer those questions, though? The Master is manipulative—a known liar but also intelligent. In the classic series, he was shown infiltrating the Panopticon, assassinating the President of Gallifrey, and hacking into the Matrix to change Time Lord historical records, never mind the misdeeds he perpetrated on Earth. In the new series, there is no great Time Lord civilization to stop him. He is free to change records and/or run amuck, and there is also no reason to think that he wouldn't use his old tricks to put the Doctor at a disadvantage. His character has been pretty consistent since being reintroduced, only diverging slightly during the Missy regeneration. Personally, I am skeptical of the child's origin given my understanding of the Master's character, but even my take is speculative. It assumes Chibnall isn't done with this part of the story, and yeah I'm hoping for it. As someone who started with classic who, I do appreciate the deep cuts.

An update for those interested in MP Thundercracker...This was shared on another Transformers forum of note. It looks like this user was able to take a couple photos under better lighting. Yeah, it's toon-accurate blue but I dig it.- 16946 replies

I'm in for MP Thundercracker, but I went with a different US shop to save a bit more. I wish the numbering scheme was consistent, though. MP-52+ got me thinking about Starscream in his toy deco, which would have been sweet. Not sure why we didn't get MP-52T or some other number. Anyway, it's a small nitpick and doesn't really matter in the long run. As it is, the toon deco seems faded compared to what I would expect and even compared to the base colour Hasbro used on Earthrise Thundercracker. An interesting choice, but I wonder if that's final or if the tone will skew away from powder blue in hand. Looking forward to it all the same. The rumoured mainline figures are interesting, but I'm still stepping back from most of these for now. If I buy any, I may pick up one or two from that list.- 16946 replies

Yeah, I can't say that I agree with the critical drinker on this one. Not sure how attacking the writers or the lead actor or the showrunner creates a logical connection for the show's downtrend beyond the same in Capaldi's era as lead. I mean, it's obvious that there are some extremely vocal people who aren't into it anymore which is fine. Anyway, my opinion is that there are probably other variables which we may not be privy to but which may be easier to reconcile. Besides, NuWho still has a ways to go before it hits the same rock bottom statistics of Classic Who (when the BBC just didn't care anymore and worked actively to remove the show from broadcast). The years with the lowest ratings are still 1986, 1987, and the last year of Classic Who, 1989. https://guide.doctorwhonews.net/info.php The saddest thing, seeing it in print, is that Sylvester McCoy's final season has some of his best episodes and people opt out because of the camp antics and low-budget special effects...but I digress.

That about sums it up. It was a couple throw away lines of dialogue. I recall Augustine letting it slip that "we screwed up" in his first communication with the astronauts. Later on he mentioned that the underground bunkers are temporary havens and would eventually fail or some such. Unfortunately, that's all we get. There's no explanation about what that screw up was, whether it was completely man-made in origin (although that seems to be implied), or how the screw up caused other plans to save humanity to stop in their tracks. This includes the research station's own work at the beginning of the movie. One would think more than one research scientist would stay until the bitter end. I do think that the stuff we see from Augustine's perspective seems to have an intentional duality to it, especially since he is burdened with regret for most of the movie. And then there's the recurring themes of family—that whole struggle which is core to his character's psychology. There is the novel, of course. Netflix likes using novels, comics, and such to source new fiction, but I'm not sure if I want to read it. I thought it was worth mentioning though since I hear a few of the characters in the novel are written differently, like Felicity Jones' character (as one example).

[R.I.P] Tanya Roberts - CONFIRMED DEAD

https://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/scifi/2021-01-03/jodie-whittaker-leaving-doctor-who/ Not sure what to make of this rumour. If it's true, I'll be sad to see her go. I liked how Whittaker's era had the show reconnecting with its roots in some ways, trying new things in others, and even turning a few tropes on end. Sadly, it's obvious that this wasn't enough to help overall ratings which have been on a downward trend since the Capaldi era. I'm also hoping that the show can return to a more consistent schedule at some point in the next year or two. I know it's a big ask given the uncertain nature of things in the real world now, but I'll be crossing my fingers. Even if we see another regeneration in the meantime, the show will be better for adding back that stability going forward.

Mm. I watched it yesterday too. I liked their new paint job. I also liked how the Doctor resolved “the invasion” in this episode. Without going into spoilers (since I’m typing this on my phone), it calls back to some of the older classic Doctor episodes. This is also the first time with Jodie after the controversial Timeless Child arc. For me, it’s really interesting seeing her Doctor confused and even doubtful of who she is and where she’s come from. Doubly so since the source of that doubt came from someone as duplicitous and destructive as the Master. I liked the ending for this one and can’t believe filming finished on it pre-pandemic (2019 seems so far away now). Anyway, I’m looking forward to series 13.

[Netflix] Transformers: War For Cybertron Trilogy: Siege
technoblue replied to Old_Nash's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I agree with @peter about the voice acting. It was notably deadpan for Siege, but Earthrise takes it a step beyond uncanny and I'm not sure what RT's intent was with the vocal direction. The deadpan.slow.awkward.pause laden dialogue trips the flow of the story, which is already traveling at Zombie Magnus pace. It's just that the effect is more obvious to me in this chapter. Maybe I'm starting to tire of seeing the same G1 events retold over and over. I mean, like Scyla notes, there's Cyberverse. And even though Cyberverse has shorter episodes and is made for a younger audience, they somehow made their G1 reboot more entertaining. I feel like this whole WFC thing can't get out of its own way. Oh well. If the toy line is any indication, we still have one chapter to go with the RT series. -
I enjoyed the film, although I was more impressed with the character study that was given more so than the sci-fi aspects.

I like how Takara and MMC have subtle differences in their interpretations of Arcee’s design. Takara went for the curvy pin-up sci-fi aesthetic. MMC went for the more modern athletic sci-fi aesthetic. For my collection, both styles have their place so I’m happy to have the chance to own both figures.- 16946 replies
