Thanks, Dobber (and everyone else). I thought I was mixing up some of those details.

Oh, I am too! I'm starting my collection again after some time away. I have one SV-51 Nora scheme and one VF-1S v.2 1/60 DYRL Roy scheme. I've been eagerly reading all of the Arcadia news on the forums and I plan to preorder the YF-19 when it is available. That said, my knowledge is limited. The line art is fantastic, but I was under the impression that Yamato used a hybrid cockpit design? Will that change at all under the Arcadia brand? As I understand it, the main differences in the Yamato valks were: * The color of the toy: DYRL gray vs TV white * The color of the gummy pilot: DYRL jumpsuit vs TV jumpsuit I may have missed some... Other variants have more obvious differences, such as the heat shield and the Jolly Roger on the VF-1A.

I would be sweating more if Arcadia was starting with the TV version VF-1 Valks. As it is, I will wait patiently and see.

It was a good youtube video, though... Hindsight being twenty-twenty, Robotech would have done better had it been synonymous with Macross alone, just as Star Blazers did well and has that extra recognition being synonymous with Space Battleship Yamato. In that respect, I think this fan video is doing something very, very right leaving out two thirds of what HG hacked in. My one question, and maybe I missed the answer, is will it stay that way? Is this going to be a Macross only thing? It would be very cool if so.

Indeed. Even though I was more of an awkward quiet teenager, I can still identify with the plight of the MC too. There is one particular scene: -

I missed most of the MacrossF releases because life happened and the models and figures had to be cut from the budget temporarily. It was at the worst time! I was just starting to collect Macross Zero figures and the 1/60 Yamatos began hitting their stride soon afterward. It's good to be on the other side of it. This will be my first Bandai Valkyrie. Any tips for the noob? I already read Graham's note about the shoulders earlier. This YF-29 and the new YF-19 both have me excited (my wallet, not so much).

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0

This season, I'm watching WataMote for my slice-of-life fix. I think making the female lead anti-social, but not letting her realize that she's anti-social is an amusing twist for this show. The first two episodes have been fun and I'm looking forward to more. -
Keith, I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry... After Shadow Chronicles, I wouldn't force anyone to do anything for the type of information that blinds!

I like CD Japan's point system. It is a little dated, but when it works well it can negate shipping or cut it in half. I also really appreciate how the shop packages its goods. Everything is secure in a box, padding, and packing paper. Other shops seem to cut costs in this area and I worry about what I'll receive when the post arrives. Sadly, this applies more to domestic shipments in the U.S. than to anywhere else that I've ordered from. Anyway, my preorder for disc 6 is in. I believe, among other things, the Porco Rosso Blu-ray should be coming with that order too.

Robotech x Voltron crossover... what the...I don't even...
technoblue replied to Tochiro's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Wat? I watched 7 minutes of that and I already want a refund. I remember going to a local con in New England when HG was marketing the Shadow Chronicles. Kevin McKeever was there seducing the unwashed with Toynami valks and other mechs. I was willing to give the presentation a chance in spite of that, but the whole event was muted with little fanfare for the show. This reminds me of that, just with more of HG's big names because of the location. I will not be fooled twice. I agree with Graham. The other tragedy of Robotech is the audience. I have a feeling they are getting older. Macross seems to do a better job at gaining new viewers with new material that also appeals to the core fans. -
Enders game and enders shadow movie
technoblue replied to buddhafabio's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Not me. I either trip over good books on my own, like I did with Ender's Game in high school, or I catch up on them after getting a good lead. That's how I discovered Alfred Bester's classics. I'm also one who tries to read a book before seeing the movie. Sometimes that's a lesson in frustration if my time is limited and the movie is good. Of course, on another note, I was in high school before Card was called out for being anti-gay and writing questionable words (buggers). As a fairly isolated teenager reading the book, I didn't get half of the nuances or double entendres that critics ended up using as fodder against him. I still do not really understand it, because I think fiction has a right to be isolated from the reality of the world around it. The author? It's not my place to judge him. Anyway, I enjoyed the first three books, zipping through both Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide when they hit the shelves at my local library. I'm not sure if Children of the Mind was necessary. The plot and characters just seem off. For me, the Bean books were merely okay---all of them quick reads, though. Bean, himself, was a tough character to gravitate toward because I didn't grow up on the street. Some of Card's narration in regard to Bean's upbringing is also more fantastic and startling when compared to Ender's. And there are other, spoilerific issues that I have with the recap shadow stories, but that's for another topic.- 46 replies

New Macross F BD Digital Remaster Boxset - TV series
technoblue replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
I missed out on the original, individual releases, and if the tiny jpegs on that site are representative of the actual upgraded video then this should be a nice set. Poor wallet, it's time to start saving money again! English in some form, whether it's subtitled, dubbed, or occassionally silly would be the icing on the cake.- 104 replies

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
technoblue replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Isn't animeigo sticking to subbing live action work now? I thought Yawara! and You're Under Arrest! were the last nails in their anime coffin. Anyway, for Macross I do think something is better than nothing. Seeing an imporvement to the subtitles would be nice, but my business savvy is low so I would be lost in that forest.- 516 replies

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
technoblue replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
You are right, I cannot tell you whether or not there was someone around with decent or better English Language skills who might have done a better translation. As for the dub, I also cannot tell you anything about what happened with those resources. These are multiple unknown variables. I'm not trying to force an opinion, I am merely baffled because I do not define the set as good enough but as a good start. My positivity is focused on pointing out what was done right and encouraging more of that in the future. I guess it may be a differect tact, but I do not see it as glossing over criticism. I will say that I think that vaulting this issue to the level of Star Wars proportions is a stretch, but (again) that is my opinion and I am not saying that yours is incorrect. Are the movie subtitles funny? Yes. Manga's were awkward too, though. Is the new OVA dub of episode 4 mismatched? I think one has to be a fan of the dub to be pissed about this one. I prefer subtitles, so it doesn't bother me, but fans like me lose out anyway since subtitles were not included for those four episodes.- 516 replies

That is funny in a dangerous Twilight Zone way. However, I addressed this in another thread. those of us who've moved on are already importing the Blu-rays direct and carrying that first expense. Anyone else who likes the show, and I admit I had to be reminded of this, probably knows it by the name Star Blazers instead of Space Battleship Yamato. I think if the show is the same and only a few names change, then that's not a bad thing.

Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
technoblue replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
Complaining for the sake of complaining is nothing new. I mean, we have a remastered Macross release with an English track and English subtitles, but you cannot please everyone. It is good that the Manga DVDs are still out there in the wild. Maybe those discontent with the final result will learn to re-encode audio, spin a hybrid Blu-ray, and put that energy to positive use? Then again, maybe not. If we close our eyes, then it looks the same and we can pick whatever sounds better. (In case I have to be obvious, my comments above are sarcasm. Personally, I do not understand how the presence of English in any form can be a negative. Have multi-language tracks or subtitles been offered in any other Macross release direct from Japan? There is bound to be a learning curve. Especially, if this is a sign of something new.)- 516 replies

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
technoblue replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets were what introduced me to anime in the U.S. before I even knew about the genre, or that Japanese shows were getting edited for American audiences. Now that's going way, way back. So, it was a bad joke on my part. I apologize. This information is good to know, and I do think Yamatao 2199 is a great way to reinvent the series. Maybe the name association will get more people watching? -

Macross, Mospeada and...what is Starblazers? ;p I think you should give that story another chance with Yamato 2199. It might be a pleasant surprise. That's too bad about Macross 7 and DYRL. One criticisim that I will give to 7 is that it takes its time with world building. I think Forntier impoved on that slightly, but anime series are shorter now. Give it another chance sometime and you'll hear more of the songs (unless that was a low point for you) and possibly get through the broken record in the beginning where all the main characters seem useless. The art design doesn't bother me because the show focuses so much on Basara and Firebomber. I think the gaudy designs are similar to many designs used by heavy metal or hair bands from that era, including the Protodevlin, but I am rambling now...I guess I like silly Macross. Edit: I just finished Angel's Egg. "Who are you?" That reminded me of Babylon 5. However, the little girl reminded me of Newt from Aliens. It was heavy on the symbolism, even for Oshii, but definitely artistic. I cannot say that the OVA ranks high with me, although it was worth watching. Overall, I would say that the story was fair and the animation was very good. -

The parallel worlds theme in Now and Then, Here and There really drew me in, but it also has some moments that sent shivers up my spine. The first act is a rollercoaster (that's good), and I thought the show handled the escalating transition very well. Anyway, that's all I'll say about the story. The soundtrack is one of my favorites. Tonight or tomorrow I hope to set aside some time to watch Angel's Egg. It's a 1985 OVA collaboration between Yoshitaka Amano and Mamoru Oshii which looks odd enough to be interesting. Right up my alley. -
Macross Plus in BD!!! OVA w/ English Dub & Movie w/En
technoblue replied to treatment's topic in Movies and TV Series
My copy also arrived in the mail earlier this week. I've had the Manga DVD releease of the OVAs for years, but I have never seen the Macross Plus movie. I set aside some time last night to watch it with the subtitles on. The Engrish was not so shocking to me, personally (I am used to it at work, because I have peers who use English as their second or third language). I think that if this was a U.S. studio then I would be more critical of those language errors. The fact that a Macross release has any English track at all is a bonus in my opinion. I hope to see more, even if we get a bunch of obvious funny lines. The other upside of this release is that the video and audio quality is amazing! Now I am looking forward to watching the OVA.- 516 replies

You're welcome! It is odd how difficult it is to find these subtitles, isn't it? Especially given that it is an anniversary year; however, no worries. I have the same files discussed in this thread. The subtitles patch the DVDs themselves and are not softsubs. If I remember correctly, ericf used slightly different translations for the songs but everything else is based off of the Central Anime subtitles. I take no credit for any of this stuff. I'm just passing it along. There are resources buried here if you run into any issues. Apart from that, just ask if you need more help. Oh, and I sent you a reply back!

That's a good point, but I have no idea. I also wouldn't be able to test it (I am without a PS3). I wonder if the other knowledgable people will catch wind of this and add in their thoughts? Maybe there was a firmware update or some software that came out, although I am out of the loop. I use a dedicated Blu-ray player, myself, for playback.

This is going back some years, but JasonC, russ, and Keith were having a conversation about using either IFOEdit or DVDSubEdit to fix out of range subtitle color values. Did those tips from page 7 or 8 not work for you or is your subtitle issue something new?

Doh! I'm still on this, if you don't mind waiting until I get out of work. I'll check to see if I have an invite for you then. At the very least, I can download the subtitles themselves and figure something out for you. If I remember correctly, the final size was around 300MB.
