  1. This thread proves that every man is blind at least once in their lifetime. The Shadowrun games are great. I've been watching this new Kickstarter from the sidelines and would love to see it get to stage three at the very least. I'm in.
  2. Not all of the mecha in this series have variable modes. IIRC, the Orguss is the most versatile. The Nikick, for instance, has the Macross standard three modes: flyer (fighter), gerwalk, and battle form (batroid). I'm hoping that this Orguss 2 tease means that we are also one step closer to a Nikick release. And it's probably a pipe dream, but getting Kei's pre-catastrophe Bronco II would be sweet.
  3. Quakewave was a good stand in at the time. I hope Takara's official Shockwave is solid. Some of the official stuff has been more miss than hit for me this year. I'm hoping that trend turns around with the corvettes.
  4. When compared to Kei's Orguss, Olson's Orguss should have a different paint scheme and some different molding. Most notably, the head. The transformation is basically the same with four modes: flyer, gerwalk, tank, and orgroid.
  5. Same here. Seeing Rogue get more involved as a team member is bitter sweet, though. I hope at some point the movie-verse X-Men can "upgrade" Rogue properly. I don't know if they can use Ms. Marvel or if they will have to go with another character, but I think there's more to Rogue that's fitting the big screen.
  6. No doubt. Moffat was twisting the knife's edge every chance he was given this episode. And the actors deserve as much credit for making it all come to life -- I loved it.
  7. Voted 1 in the fixed poll. Financially, things have worked out for me with Arcadia and Bandai. Previously, that wasn't the case, and I missed Yamato's hey-day and subsequent swan song. It also helps that I only buy one of each figure that interests me. Chatting about Arcadia's new direction -- pricing and discount policies -- is interesting, and I think it stinks that more retail prices are looking like aftermarket prices. Anyway, I still look forward to what Arcadia is planning next and I hope they still have a license to pursue more VF-1 releases.
  8. That's great news from MegaHouse! I picked up the Orguss/Orguss 2 Blu-ray box set on Mandarake and will be watching Orguss 2 for the first time this weekend.
  9. I'm going to temper my excitement for both until there is more news. It's good to see Takara is still very much in the MP game, though.
  10. I'm not touching the Prison School anime after wading into the manga. It was a little too extreme for my tastes and I couldn't finish it. That's trauma that I'd rather not revisit. And I was bummed by the way Gate ended its first season too. I was expecting more of a cliffhanger... But, instead, the story got caught up in exposition and didn't really go anywhere. It felt like a whimper instead of a shout. I'm still willing to give it a chance, though. I'll be tuning in when it returns in January.
  11. Acronyms often form words. It's rare for an acronym to be used outright as an abbreviation, although I've seen it on occasion with more technical documentation and there are well known acronyms that fit both examples. For instance NATO vs ICBM. In Star Wars, though? I've always used "at" when pronouncing AT-AT. For the AT-ST, I pronounce it "at-s-t" but I have no idea what is correct and I'm not really bothered.
  12. I was having difficulty seeing the difference in these shots. They are all very close to one another visually. I still think the original has the most detail, but the other two show promise as well. Your comparison with the Animeigo DVDs is the real eye opener. The colors look blown out and contrasty. I don't know if that's the right terminology, but they seem off when compared with the blu-ray, which seems to have more natural tones. You may be right. I don't have the 2008 DVD set, so I wasn't aware of that reference until now. And yeah, I do agree with you about how grain "discussions" can quickly turn into debates. Sometimes it's best to keep the peace.
  13. This is true, because learning is hard and (to quote Spaceballs), "Good is dumb." Wikipedia is lazy research. I think Paladinrja has a bunch of legitimate newb-ish questions. If only there was a Macross site that had resources and links where members were giving back to the community. I mean, there must be a site like that close at hand, but the name is escaping me. For my part, I'm not well versed in Macross mythology like the senior members that have been contributing to Paldinrja's threads. I wish I were so that I could give more of a contribution, but I've only just started to scratch the surface with the literature that's available. I do agree that having a deeper understanding of the source material can further one's enjoyment of the show, but I also think that it isn't necessary to dive in the deep end if you are merely a casual viewer or in it for just the anime and the music.
  14. @Paladinrja: The blu-ray remaster already did a lot to improve the image. I think the modern denoise filters are interesting because they do seem to provide a digital wash to the material for those who like that look. Personally, as much as I'm curiosity about the technology, I prefer having some of the original grain. But I don't know how much grain is enough, because I haven't seen Macross on film. Those closest to the material would know and that's why I'm glad that I have the blu-ray box set. As an aside, Disney has done similar restoration and clean-up work with its own classic catalog titles like Pinnochio, Cindarella, Snow White, and so on - all of which were animated using the aspect ratio of 1.35:1, otherwise known as 4:3, and all of which are much improved on blu-ray.
  15. I was hoping to get back to nhyone's comparison shots, which resurrected this thread. For me, I don't know if the spatial/temporal denoise would be worth the loss of visual information. The NLmeans denoise is interesting, though, even given the odd tinting and the cut down effects in the opening sequence examples on the last page. The clean shots from the bonus disc are great. Having seen how much effort other studios have put forward when cleaning old prints (for example, the BBC cleaning up and restoring classic Doctor Who), I can appreciate the effort. If there is a software filter that can get close to that, then wow. Pretty cool.

Yeah, it's worth posting the news again.

Oh yeah! That's what I'm talkin' about. Thanks for the photo links IXTL and treatment.
  18. Just shy of 30 Valkyries, 15 of them are VF-1 types. 1 x DYRL Roy VF-1S 1 x DYRL Max VF-1A 1 x DYRL Kaki VF-1A 1 x DYRL VF-1A Mass Production 1 x VF-1E Elintseeker 1 x VF-1J with GBP Armor (Arcadia) 1 x VF-1J Anniversario (Arcadia) 1 x TV Roy VF-1S 1 x TV Hikaru VF-1J 1 x TV VF-1A Mass Production 1 x VF-1D Trainer 1 x VF-1A Angel Birds 1 x VF-X 2 x VF-1A Unassembled kits for a project down the road. I once had a plan to stick with the new Arcadia releases...that plan failed...
  19. Heh. Not a fan of the pose or those shoulder pads. It took me a few moments to find the robot's head. I think this would look better with some light color accents to improve the contrast.
  20. Fantastic deal, Noel! I paid way too much for mine (closer to $600 shipped than $500), but I'm glad to mark the 4G off my wish list too. Here's a new VF-4G that sold on eBay yesterday for 800 AUD: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1-60-Yamato-Macross-VF-4G-Lightning-III-NEW-/161818164871?hash=item25ad1d3e87&nma=true&si=ASpYOmo%252Fd%252F5wo0XdwoeFeo8kNq4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
  21. Even with the unrated edition, the original Robocop was over-the-top and camp, but I think that was intentional. The cautionary tale on the marriage of government and corporate works was just as important as Murphy's horrifying story of being turned into a machine. The problem with the original films, I think, is that the first was the only one that was able to do the sci-fi social commentary justice and make it entertaining. The original sequels were disappointing and I thought Robocop 2 and 3 ended up more as parodies of the first than as stand-out films in their own right. In that regard, I agree with Mike. The new Robocop was more of a true sequel to the original (in spirit, anyway).
  22. True. I'm a bit jealous, though. With the exchange rate as it is now, that ends up being less than I paid for mine when I did some panic buying on Mandarake.
  23. A used VF-4G sold this morning for 52100 JPY: http://page23.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/o112832393 The machine translation is odd, but it looks like a standard auction where the seller opened the box after buying the 4G to check for defects, transformed the toy a couple of times, and then put the Valkyrie on display in fighter mode. No major issues in the description, so someone got a deal given the current aftermarket trends.
