The computer and electronics super geek thread
technoblue replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Okay... * steps back * I'm going to disagree, based on my experience, and leave it at that. I don't really want to argue bullet points or start a wall of text war. I'm too old for that, and it really doesn't matter in the great scheme of things because stirring the pot wasn't the reason for my reply. My point was that people should use the system they like and leave the political/flame-bait bs out of it. If someone is curious about adding to their skill set or learning about something new, then they should hear all sides (for and against). As for the rest, I'm glad Windows works for you. Morning edit...Why would a blatant admin command be available to a regular user and not locked behind sudo? I think the crux of what gets people frustrated with Linux is that the use model is different. Windows assumes many things, including basic configuration settings and has a well-developed GUI. Linux does not assume as much, depending on which distro your using, and that can get a person into trouble because a GUI may or may not be available to set up the system. You keep bringing up Red Hat. I guess you mean Red Hat Enterprise Linux and not Fedora. The rm -rF thing may have been a joke, but the point is valid. A Linux newbie would not be familiar with the command line and should not have access to wipe root. -

Hey, frothymug. How'd it go? Is your desktop running okay and did Windows activate on the SSD without any major hiccups? -

I'd be more interested if this were the beginning of a scaled down non-MP run of the dibots. Guttur proved that MP sized dinos are not for me.- 9128 replies

I think that helps. Megatron and Soundwave were always messing around causing trouble. And it could be perspective, but Shockwave looks a hair taller than Starscream in the new photo. Cool display!- 16669 replies

If I follow you, the plan is to: Put together the new system. Install Windows 7 OEM on the new SSD. Connect the old HDD to the new system (in a D: configuration, for instance). Move the files from the old HDD to the new SSD (from D: to C:, for instance). Yes, this will work. The Windows installation on your HDD should be ignored since it's no longer the boot drive. -

I can agree with those points. Also, Microsoft announced this week that it will be supporting the bash shell in Windows 10. http://betanews.com/2016/03/30/windows-10-ubuntu-bash-shell/ I'm going to have to look and see how well a user can lock down the Windows 10 spyware. It's getting harder for me to say no to the upgrade. On a tangential point, it seems things are converging more in tech. It's a much different approach than what was common ten years ago. And consider what other companies are doing: Android devices use a Google system which is based on the Linux kernel. The PS4 is a Sony proprietary console which is based on the BSD kernel. MacOS was already mentioned, and it is a BSD derivative too. There are hobby devices, like the Raspberry Pi device, which use the Linux Kernel, and so on. At the end of the day, I think systems are going to become more and more flexible. If we are also approaching a common standard, then it may be a good thing for businesses and customers alike. My only concern is that the standard makes sense. -
Great photos, Gundam@EFSF. Even if there is some parts forming involved, the articulation looks well done. And do I spy an ankle tilt mechanism?

That looks promising. I wonder if we will get some RWBY Nendos too?

But Windows does not work in all cases. You guys must have your rose colored glasses on, or maybe you're lucky enough to have never encountered a blue screen (but I seriously doubt it). Windows can be brought to a halt just as easily as any other OS. Use what you are comfortable with, especially if it is your home desktop. I work with hardware designers. The team I work with uses multiple operating systems and we have to test and document the software that they code on these systems. No one system is better than any other, really. They are all equally frustrating/helpful at times. The thing is, you can't go to a customer and say the OS is to blame when there is a bug. *sigh* As usual, it comes down to personal preferance, and not who has the most clever hyperbole or snark. -

Ben of Benscollectables reviews Spark Toys ST-01, not-Optimus, from The War Within. Glorious indeed. And Megatron is next, with Grimlock not far behind. I think I'm going all in with this line, but I want to make sure that the quality is solid with Optimus first.- 9128 replies

But...it's getting better... I was about to write a very long post about it but stopped when I noticed your update, azrael. The fixes are overly complicated and (speaking of Linux) point to something that is missing or incomplete with the DSM 6 upgrade. A customer should NOT have to resort to command-line hacks to get their database back up and running, especially when using a system that promotes a user-friendly GUI. I think Major Focker's best bet is to wait for Synology to give him a solution. I'm just not sure how mission critical his NAS is to his network. -
I personally remember seeing that specific thing in Empire only. I caught myself up with Rebels this evening. I was three episodes behind. A nice finale, I thought, but it did pull a few punches for sure.

LoL! Yeah, that is one of those dated story points. I remember the early episodes when the Yamato crew was being called to arms, and all of Yuki's peers were present alongside her. Then, woops, off the ship with you. It never made sense to me. Instead of letting that full female compliment of support and medical staff on board (creating a true ark in space), they left the women behind on a dying planet. It was even more ironic as the threats increased later on. She was doing everything from radar work, to nursing, to food preparation. Those space navy guys were lucky she had plot armor and wasn't the recipient of a golden bullet. Indeed, 2199 handled it better.

Yeah. But I think old English Dub (the first two seasons) is one of the better dubs out there. It is worth preserving that and the original uncut Japanese version with subtitles. Creating a Star Blazers dub for 2199 doesn't make sense, but I understand why Voyager was using that brand to market the show. As an aside, I like having choices with my media. Streaming is convenient and all but it should be a license that companies try to get in addition to a physical media license. If they stop doing that, I'll have no choice but to hope for more Japanese releases with official subtitles and that's like wishing on a star sometimes. Luckily, I didn't have to worry about any of this with 2199. My guess is that 2202 will be distributed in a similar fashion and we will have an option to import a physical copy of the Japanese version with subtitles.

I have Planet X Vulcan. The FoC look doesn't bug me as much as I thought it would in person. Actually, it turned out to be rather nice in hand and these dinobots also look good with a Transformers Prime display. Anyway, since he is not your thing I'll move on. Gigapower's dinos are big and chunky, like upscaled versions of the old toys. The bigness may be a distraction. At least, it is for me. Guttur is top heavy and looks a little too beefy. Grassor looks like he may be better, but he is due out...sometime. I have no idea when they plan to release their not Grimlock. Maybe next year if we are lucky. Most of the Grimlocks in your list try to keep a G1 look, which means that Vulcan is the only design that goes off in left field. Unlike Giga, FansToys sticks closer to the G1 toon (as you've discovered). Their not-Snarl is also a head shorter than Giga's release. It will be interesting to see if that size difference remains consistent. If I were interested in the dino combiners at all, then I would probably look at the ToyWorld releases too. I like how their individual transformations look. They seem more pleasing to me than GCreations. But if I could only get one Grimlock, I would go SD.- 9128 replies

I think Leiji Matsumoto's art style has aged well. It's worth being exposed to it at least once, especially if you enjoy Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, or any of the numerous spin-offs of these (Gun Frontier, The Galaxy Railways, the list goes on). There is also a quality deluxe box set of the original Yamato TV series that is still available from various Japanese shops. The downside is that there are no subtitles included. I hope the success of the new show eventually makes way for a subtitled release of the original anime at some point, but I don't know if the original Yamato has any licensing issues like the original Macross. Anyway, the really nice thing about the original Yamato, as noted before, is that you will see a different telling of the story than what was told in 2199. I agree that the original story is dated in parts, but it is still fun in its own right. If you want better production values, I can recommend the first two movies too. Alas, I have yet to see Be Forever Yamato.

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time II: The Quickening
technoblue replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think the main conceit of Sucker Punch was the idea that Snyder tried to visualize the fantasies of the main character (Baby Doll) and passed that on with hardly any explanation to the audience. It was hard to track the switch between the actual world in the mental care facility and Baby Doll's multiple false realities. She had levels of displacement going on. The dance brothel being one and the ridiculous action sequences where proto-Stick would appear as her guide being the more complex retreats. I think the movie may have worked better if Snyder had grounded the fantasy with more reality and shown us just a bit more transition. I know I would have felt better about the movie if I got to see more of Baby Doll as just a regular patient getting treatments. Seeing more of Baby Doll without the overblown fantasy would have created more of an emotional connection for me and that would have allowed me to care more about the odd stuff. As it stands, it was an interesting mess that needed a good editor (or two, or three).- 854 replies

Ah! I was having a difficult time imagining that last night. I'm still curious about how it would look. It may look cool, no doubt. But if one wants to be creative with aiming the cannons, it seems a sideways placement will have some restrictions.
-
How? 400mm is about 15 3/4 inches. A detolf shelf has the following dimensions: 340mm width x 390mm length. If you can fudge it sideways, make sure to take a picture. I think Spanner's idea for placing it at an angle is the best solution for the detolf too.
-
It should fit on top. If you want to put it inside the detolf, you will need to angle it in. The inside measurements are tight for the 400mm cannons. You won't be able to point the cannons at the glass door, for instance.

I'm looking forward to more news. And I wonder if the team will continue to pay respect to the original anime with the nods and twists that became such a fun part of 2199?
