  1. Look, I don't subscribe to the notion of "be happy the anime companies release anything." If I put down my money for a product, I want it to be as close to the original as possible. But we have to realize there's no such thing as a perfect release. With directors like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas tinkering with their films, we can't even get perfect releases of American products, let alone Japanese ones. American TV shows have their music changed constantly when released on DVD because of rights issues. It's just the way it is. Do the Japanese producers understand the American market? Probably not. Do they care about what we what? No, they probably don't. But for these changes that are dictated by the Japanese, they call the shots, so there's little we can do on this side of the Pacific. As for the complaining, let me elaborate. It's counterproductive. The popular stereotype of hardcore American anime fans is that we are never satisfied with anything and will complain about everything. Whatever a company does with a title, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they know we will complain about something on every single release, where is their commitment to release quality products? They can pass off any garbage, because whether it's an A or F level release, someone will find something at fault with it. Going back to Zeta Gundam for a moment....was I angered by the changes? Sure, I felt lied to. Was I disappointed with Bandai? Definitely. But it wasn't a substantial enough change that I would let my anger over it prevent me from enjoying the show. Anime fans have to develop a reasonable margin of what changes they can live with and what they can't. Seriously, does this change ruin the release? Hardly. Now, if they went and changed the ENTIRE soundtrack because they wanted to make it more modern/hip for American audiences, that'd be a different story entirely. I would happily launch a complaint about that. But in the grand scheme of things, one song change in Gunbuster doesn't compare to the butchering of shows like Cardcaptor Sakura, One Piece, etc. Those are the real battles that are important, not this.
  2. Oh boo hoo, woe is you. You've never even seen Gunbuster, yet you're so righteously offended. And great, use a perfectly legitimate anime release as an excuse to engage in piracy so you can stick it to the man at Bandai. Do you seriously have any idea how ridiculous you sound?
  3. I have to say, as a long time anime fan, I'm pretty sickened by the constant whining of anime fans about how things are released here. I can recall complaints about AnimEigo's Macross because they threw in some Star Trek references. I can recall the complaining about the Orange Road OPs. And of course, I can recall (and was affected by) the issues with Zeta Gundam. No one likes it when changes are made. Zeta Gundam is one of my top favorites, so I certainly wasn't happy with the musical changes or the initial problem with the dubtitles. But you know what? You have to live with it. Releases won't always be handled the way you like. Honestly, isn't some of the sentiment here extremely overdramatic? It's a short piece of music. Changing it doesn't have the apocalyptic effect of ruining the scene, the show, the world, etc. There's an old cliche about picking your battles, and this is one of those cases. Complaining about the butchering of a show like One Piece is one thing, but this is another. If suddenly Bandai Visual is so thoroughly evil for doing this, no one is forcing anyone to buy this DVD. If perfectionism supersedes the ability to sit back and enjoy a show, what's the point of watching anything?
  4. It's a bunch of bull. MSG was released on LD in 1999, and obviously it's the same audio on the current release. The movies were redubbed, but that audio is separate. The real reason the Japanese dub was never released here was that Bandai didn't want Japanese fans to reverse import cheaper American DVDs. And given how expensive the box sets that they finally released are, the fear was justified.
  5. I don't see why everyone is so hung up on continuity with ZZ and CCA. Nowhere has it ever been said that these movies change continuity. They're just an alternate version of the story, no different from what DYRL is to Macross.
  6. I've put out a general call on MAHQ for Macross related materials, so hopefully that will generate some interest. I think this thread has served its purpose, and any further discussion of MAHQ and Macross can be done via e-mail or PM.
  7. Maybe I wasn't clear enough on this. I don't update things based on what I consider to be more popular. However, the popularity of a series certainly reflects on the contributions I receive from others. Gundam is constantly in the public eye, so it's no surprise that people will constantly send me specs, lineart, etc. With Macross, we all know how new productions are few and far between, so obviously outside contributions for that will dry up. My eventual goal for Macross is to have all color lineart for everything, streamlined specs and detailed historical profiles. I'm slowly getting there with the lineart, but the specs and profiles will obviously take much longer.
  8. See, but the Macross section hasn't been abandoned. I don't recall exactly when, but a few months ago there were indeed updates. All the mecha and ships that appear in the original TV series and DYRL were separated to have their own profiles. A bunch of new color lineart was added for the various versions of the Nousjadeul-Ger and Queadluun-Rau. And though it may not have been a credited update, most of the Patlabor section was re-organized earlier this year. I was a fan of Macross long before I ever discovered Gundam. My dedication to improve the section is there, but all my main contributors for Macross have disappeared. For years, I've wanted to open a Macross model review section and have made several announcements, but no one ever responded. Of course, it doesn't help that Macross anime productions are few and far between. As much as we all love the franchise, it's not exactly going anywhere now, whereas Gundam has a zillion anime and manga produced constantly. What it all boils down to is that running such a massive website is too much for just one person. MAHQ's mecha sections have evolved into a community project, and the results depend on how much people are willing to help.
  9. Valid criticism is perfectly acceptable, but "MAHQ sucks for everything outside of Gundam" is not valid criticism, just a useless complaint. I inherited the mecha sections from The Mecha Domain years ago with plenty of mistakes, and I've tried to fix them. Plenty are still there. I've tried to make it clear that I'm completely open to criticism, feedback and contributions, but in the last five years I've found that people would rather just complain than do something to make a difference. If my response has me "bent out of shape," it's because I'm tired of seeing these attitudes over and over.
  10. You know, if you're all frustrated by MAHQ's supposed lack of quality outside of Gundam, it wouldn't hurt to e-mail me and bring this to my attention. I'm sorry that so much of the site doesn't fit people's standards. I'm not Nanashi or Egan Loo, and I don't have the resources to purchase Macross lineart books, so I depend on community contributions. Would I like to have all color art for Macross, Patlabor, etc? Sure. But since most people only contribute Gundam, I work with what I can. If that's not good enough, well, no one's forcing any of you to go to MAHQ and look at so much garbage.
  11. There are reasons why Renton is such a whiner and Holland is so abusive. Keep watching, because there is a payoff coming for all of this.
  12. Dude, do you REALLY think there's even the slightest chance that Bandai would be crazy/stupid enough to create a product like this? Sure, they may pimp Gundam to no end, but not this far.

  14. Orguss, not surprisingly, has some Macross references (and vice versa, as we know). Around episode 2, super pimp mecha pilot Kei is thinking about his past flings, and one of them is Minmay (with accompanying picture).
  15. Wouldn't happen...too much talking, not enough boobs or monsters. Seriously, every Sci-Fi original movie I've seen (except for Babylon 5: Legend of the Rangers) is some kind of C-level monster movie about cockroaches, bees, bugs, lizards or whatever.
  16. Same thing happened to me. Thank god for Bandai's free weekly episode streamings to save the day.
  17. I think I've avoided Macross 7 topics in all the years I've been posting/lurking here. Maybe that's changing since I'm slowly watching the series again. With that said.... you need to calm down deadghost. It's not the end of the world if Macross 7 isn't up to snuff for you. Also, please use some grammar. Humans communicate using sentences, punctuation and proper capitalization. It would really help if you used proper English instead of giant blobs of text. Seriously, it makes my eyes hurt just trying to decipher that post.
  18. The only Macross titles I see going to HD are Zero and DYRL, since they're the only ones that are natively widescreen. If future Macross productions are in widescreen like Zero, I'd expect to see them in HD too.
  19. If you go to Right Stuf's Weekly Specials section, they have all 3 box sets of the TV series for $18-23 each, and the New Files sequel OVA for $16. I picked all those up a few weeks ago because it's such a bargain. http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/ca...egory/4/153/100
  20. Actually, I would think that scientists studied the pinpoint barrier and reverse-engineered it (like they did with Overtechnology) so that pinpoint barriers could be created as standard equipment, rather than an accidental byproduct like on the Macross.
  21. Not at all. Topher was the star of That 70's Show, and he's been in quite a few movies. As for his age, Topher Grace is 28, which makes him about 3 years younger than Tobey Maguire.
  22. Anchor Bay has nothing to do with it. All they did was purchase Manga Entertainment. It's not like they went to Big West and re-licensed anything. There's no difference in the 'new' releases of Plus and II, so I don't think it even matters in any potential problem with HG.
  23. I don't know dude...I think you're reaching. The ending to Gasaraki is certainly pretty strange, but I think VOTOMS was pretty straightforward. As for Macross Zero, I "understood" exactly what it was: trippy nonsense.
