Macross Frontier Episode 23 Talkback Thread *READ 1st Post*
Ork_dreadnought replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
While I'm probably unique in this, I'm increasingly burnt out and bored with this series. The conspiracy and mystery plots look increasingly shallow (He's Ranka's brother, Ai-Kun is a Vajra, the war is about fold quartz, it all involves M0 etc etc). As for Alto, well, perhaps we're getting somewhere in terms of character development, but its probably too late. More action please. -

I'm going to repeat my prediction of a Tominio style Kill-em-all ending. I'm quite serious. -
Macross 7: First time to view the series

So, you are in fact saying, that because lots of people dislike M7, that makes it success? Oh, I get it finally! Why so many defend a series which by any dispassionate review is sub par! Its good old fashioned martyrdom and elitism. Well, to each thier own. I didn't like it, but that doesn't mean that other people can't enjoy it. Thank you, that's been bugging me for a while now. -
Macross Frontier Plot Theories...

I'm just going to post a few wild predictions based on episode 22, having mulled it over during the last week. 1) SMS is in fact pawn of Grace and Co, although only the Captain and few of the high ups know this. Given that Grace has in effect been encouraging people to hate the Vajra, and SMS basically is Vajra-haters-r-us, they now make a better tool than NUNs as Leon has tried to kill Grace. Having carrier with advanced fighters that has gone rogue is an excellent way to acheive your aims, and plausible deniability is very high. 2) Leon, while being a megalomaniac, is probably the only only one acting in the best interests of fleet, for reasons that will be revealed very soon. The motives of Grace (stir up war?) and SMS owner Birla (Make tons of cash via fold quartz?) will not turn out to be pure. 3) Ozma Lee, while a decent parent, adopted and cared for Ranka, for purely selfish reasons. Possibly to keep her away from other factions, but to ensure she's availible to SMS. So, basically, I'm pretty a Tomino style "Everyone sucks and dies" ending -

The most contraversial male lead short of Shinji Ikari, whose personality promotes numerous repetitive arguements on this forum. Everything else is good though, if you can bear with it. -
Interesting, that's some welcome thread necromancy. I was just browsing that website and there's some good resouces too. daeudi, I've joined that group, thanks for posting the link.

Who had the manliest death in Macross?
Ork_dreadnought replied to sucker4meltrans's topic in Movies and TV Series
While I would credit Micheal's actions as ballsy, I have to give this to Guld. Turning off the limiter and ramming the ghost (plus the eyball popping in the movie) in an attempt to get redemption via death is manly tears personified. -

Ditto. The gg release was notably choppy for this episode. On a lighter note, I really liked the episode. It nice for see someone force the Alto/Sheryl/Ranka issue, and Leon showing his colours. It still felt a lot a transistional episode though. -
You're sorta making my argumement for me there. All that line does is establish that she will do something that the protoculture does did or does not. That does not mean she is inherently seperate, all it means is that context she's highlighting a difference. I'd also like to reiterate that translation issues make this sort of nitpicking pointless. Unless someone on the board with a good grasp of japanese weighs in on this, we're still stuck with using fansubs, which tend to disagree on things like this. It may be simpler to wait for Grace to reveal her plan and origins, rather than quibble over grammar.
-
I would warn against putting too faith into a single out of context sentance. Issues of translation come into play, and we can't take any offhand comment by a character known for being deceitful at face value. Saying that she cannot be a member of the protoculture just because she refers to them in those terms is faulty. If I said I would acheive something that English could not acheive in 100 years, it doesn't mean I'm not english.
-
A thought just struck me, if Grace and co are the protoculture in someway, is that getting rather close to religious metaphor? Consider this, if the prorotculture is indeed the creator of all intelligent species we've seen in the series (and conceviably the Vajra too), this makes them in effect, gods. Given Shoji Kawamori's spiritalist tendancies, it wouldn't surprise me if he'd go down this route, although hopefully not in the same very obvious way as Evangelion. In this light, what is Grace? Her actions could be compared to a fallen angel, with all the manipulation, temptation and large scale destruction. However, those are also very common traits of supposidly benevolent deities. Consider what Zeus and his kin got up to in the old greek pantheon, and what God, note capital G, did in the old testiment. Given how mythical Macross Zero was, I'm starting to wonder if Shoji was laying the foundations for some big reveal in Frontier. I hope I'm wrong though.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, the Basara should come back as an Ozzy Osborne style burnout -
Now that I hadn't heard, especially the bit about Aquarion. Still, that puts a new spin on Ranka and Nanase's relationship. And that shower scene.
-
hehehehehehehe, breaks the mind doesn't it? The odd thing is though, I strongly suspect that Alto putting a dress on and singing with the other two girls will be the finale.
-
Yes, the fact she periodically changes into a loli is balanced out by the fact she has the largest honkers in anime at all other times. Its something that makes me think the character was a gift to doujin artists, like Alto.

I didn't interpret the scene that way, mainly because that ship did not resemble any previous colony ship, and seemed to be a little bit damaged. As for the Grace being Well Intentioned Extremist, I was going by this definition. The reason why I said "at best", instead of saying flat out she was one, is that we don't know what her motivations are. I'll try to explain myself better in future. -

Well, given that Galaxy is currently missing after a Vajra attack, the three simplist responses to that question are: 1) They are in fact pawns like everyone else. 2) The disappearence of the Galaxy fleet is an elabourate fraud. 3) They suffered from the old cliche that affects scientists, in that they messed with things they didn't understand, and it blew up in their faces. Probably under Grace's direction (see 1). I'm not convinced persay that Galaxy or any character is the ultimate badguy, although I think Grace is at best a Well Intentioned Extremist.
