I think asramms could be fitted to seakings, I know some helicopters carry IR missles for self defense. I would like to see an F-35B take on a harrier in a dogfight....it should be very interesting. Mock dogfight that is. Oh well we all know the marines train at topgun as well, and I am sure they will make the F-35B into a formidable dogfighter just like how topgun taught students eons ago how to make the unlikely phantom turn into a ass killing mig hunter.

Yea the Sea harrier looks badass armed to the teeth with sidewinders and pointy AMRAAMS. Never realized it had verniers!! I always knew the sea harriers looked a lot different than the other versions. It looks better too. I know marine harriers can't break mach 1 but can teh sea harrier? Seems the JSF will be the better turner but the Sea harrier has the zoom and climb/VTOL fight. However if the JSF is still just barely able to lift of VTOL I am sure its VTOL manuevers in dogfights will surely suck. So far the JSF has 2 things going for it against eh sea harrier. 1-stealth 2-speed. (supersonic) So with that lets make this variant specific F-35B(marine/RN) vs Sea harrier. Not sure if the F-35B will have verniers as wel. now lets compare more. F-16C vs F-16XL We all know the F-16XL is great @ striking...but how does it fair in dogfighting in the A2A rule compared to the F-16C....block whichever most suited for A2A we also know the MIg 29 is well rusiian planes in general need tons more maintenance support than US planes(taken from F-16.net forums) so with that in mind...disregard maintenance for following comparison F/A-18D marine night attacker vs Mig 33 Fulcrum. Hornets have almost always been compared to fulcroms. So why not compare them here too?

oh normally due to superior technology we would win a lot of engagements in muiltiple scenarios. But for this thread its mostly about either strike capability or A2A. and for A2A usually this means either interception, or 1v1 WVR knife fighting. I would pit the ACTIV against the Su-37 but the ACTIV never flew for very long, and was only done for test purposes, but hell maybe the SU376 was done for the same reasons...but I think sukhoi tried to export it. Originally it was for the russians but we all know how poor their country is. I am thinking right now the super flanker has a instantaneous turn advantage over th4e F-22 but as Nied pointed out, I do agree that the raptor has the means to engage and disengage and bring the fight to its terms. I think the F-15K might have a good thrust advantage and a T/W ratio over teh super flanker as well..that fight will most likely be a zoom and dive battle. The F-15K wont be able to outturn the flanker unless it exceeds critical AOA which I presume would be either below or a lilttle over 20 degrees AOA, where as the FBW limits for the flanker are 27 degrees AOA(SU-27) presumably the super flankers AOA limit couild be much higther. *Note flankers can only execute cobras by disabling the AOA limiter* No I do not think VF-0 and VF-1 in fighter mode could really fair well in reality to modern figthters.....Both lack canards or horizontal stabilizers....more like small slow blackbirds if you ask me. THrust vectoring could help BUT ANYWAYS. F-15s have alwayts been known for their speed and t/w ratio along with thrust. F-15K seems to have the best out of all F-15s. From the Janes F-15 sim there WAS no AOA limiter, the plane was basicalyl o hydraulic controls and you could overexceed critical AOA just by pulling back on the stick all of a sudden. F-22s have even more thrust........so yea I think the F-22 woould do GREAT against a super flanker. It's main key to defearing the flanker in IMHO would be to use its surplus thrust to maintain a high sustained turn rate in order to eventually get behing the flanker. And good energy management just in case the flanker does a cobra. TYhjen agfain if it did, it wouold be low on energy trying to recover and the raptor could swing around affter zooming out, turn tight using thrust vectoring, and get a AIM-9x shot pretty easily. Guys think the F-35B with gunpod could stil dogfight well nad outgun the harrier?

Hmmm. I kind of figured they might try to upgrade the JSF's A2A capability in the future. Thrust vectoring and maybe manuvering slats could help. And me I really do not care for stealth.....rather have full deadly potential of weaponry and systems rather than make everything stealth reliant. Have another few comparisons. F-35B vs Sea Harrier/AV-8B Harrier II. F-15K vs Su-37 and....not sure if we went over this. F-22 vas SU-37. WHile the SUper flanker has real high Alpha I believe the Raptor might have higher sustained turn rate. IT also has MORE thrust. Coupled wiuth the fact that almost all of its A2A arms can be internal as to not create more drag.

From what I hear Japan is doing a new FX program to make a replacement for their F-15J fleets. Stealth and thrust vectoring...oncepts are in the jane's books but nothing too concrete. Any more news on agile falcon? It looks cool!! and BTW how does the FSX F-2 compare with the F-16C?

yes specifically thre F35B is overweight. My assumptions of the JSF being inferior in A2A is from many books I have read and articles over the years while in high school comparing it to both the falcon nad F-22. I am certain that improvements could be made to top the F-16...but you gotta admit that lil bugger is hard to beat. DOes anyone know if the EA-18G will have a gun? I know it is supposed to replace the Prowler...and it outdoes it in self defense and multiroling, but does it retain a gun? If it does...by goly it'll be my fav hornet incarnation yet!

eh this is a debate about which is the better dogfighting aircraft, not the better potential for manufacturer or country. No the F-35A does NOT have thrust vectoring. It's menioned in one of the JSF high gloss books from a while back. The F-35B does but its only because its VTOL. SO marketing and budgetary constraints and technology leaks aside, no I don't believe the F-35A is the better dogfighter. The canopy, though extended, and other things such as limited A2A weapons carriage, hweck in the book they described how it was mainly for a multiservice strike fighter rather then a definitive F-16 replacement. The F-16E's increased thrust compensates for the added weight and drag of the CFT, one of the reasons the higher thrust engines were chosen to power it to begin with. Hell I do not even thinkn the F-35A could outaccelerate the F-16E, by sources I read, the F-35A can't even pass mach 2. Nor was it made to dogfight well. So in some cases some may ask ,"then shin why did u even bother in comparing the 2?" simply put, its another case of a good plane being replaced by a average plane. TO replace and F-16 i'd imagine the fighter would also hjave to be more manuverable and a better fighter than the F-16 close in. But this is not the case. THis is not like when the F-14 and F-15 replaced the F-4, bnoth planes surpassed the F-4 in almost every scenario. Can the JSf do that to the F-16? I doubt it. Maybe in strike, certianly in stealth, but F-16 is just a tough lil bugger to beat. well....the JSF can dogfight the hell out of an F117 though.

hmmmmm I still thnk the F-165 would be the better dogfighter, more manueverability. Overall I do hope the JSF program does well but I lost a lot of hope in it. Heres to hoping the next ,multiroler is F-15 sized, at least then there is not a lot of compromises. Anyways, anyone know if the air force F-15E's will get any of the advancements that the F-15K will get?

Hmm. Guys I do not know if you noticed, but a few months back IRan made a mod to one of their existing F-5s. Added another TAIL fin!! Loooks like a YF-17. WOnder how this fairs against a normal F-5E. also something puzzles me with the F-14. What exactly are it's best strengths in a dogfight? While it is defninitely more of an interceptor, it is still a nasty scrapper...but what are its most useful knife fighting tactics? I know with the phantom, the phantoms speed was the best asset. But the tomcat is niether the 9g falcon nor the Sr71 in terms of speed...so how would one effectively bring it home and nail ass in the big turkey? I know for flanker it is high alpha, falcon it's ability to regain energy quick and its just plain nimble. Phantom is it's zoom and climb and dive.

Hmm I think the Super bug is great for canada as well. Actually I think all teen fighters are better than teh JSF, which again I think only does well due to stealth. Super hornet would be GREAT for canada and heck the CAF already has hornets so the transition shouldn't be too hard. renato, the japanese or most of the fans do not like the 1/.100 VF-0. Imode translated a bunch of BBS comments a while back and it proved that while everyone thinks we are ungracious fans who expect yamato to be jesus christ of the japanese macross market and that yqamato negelcts us because of bitching, in realityt the target market, the japanese are FAR more vocal than we are in terms of bashing the VF-0 1/100 and other products. nope, no aircraft carriers. Do not know about a navy. The F/A-18 is good at multirole and hell probably cheap, so that is why canada opted for it. Yes it can do well off carrier as well. I have read about the avro plane from canada...first FBW interceptor. Anyone care to elaborate and compare its abilities to the phantom, america's top 60's interceptor?

The line was originally called neo action masters and the whole premise is articulation for a good price. NO there is NOT an anime for this! NO pilot episode whatsoever, the DVD just has a commercial in CG and some other stuff. Like character profiles I believe. THough articulation is the emphasis starscream lacks good leg articulation. nno kneeds and hips cant be moved well. It is basically, repaints of old toys, and retools of older toys sized downa nd given articulation. Big convoy, the laser cycles, predaking, god ginrai, lio convoy, and star saber were on a "vote for next robotmaster list" however most of these are coming out. laser cycles, and lio convoy already showing up on lists and protos of star and victory saber/leo already showing up in pictures. its a mesh of multiple transformer universes and ties into G1....i believe with binaltech but i forgot the connection. Binaltech itself takes place before the transformers g1 cartoon movie. and yes victory leo, star saber, and their combined mode victory saber, has good articulation

As foir the VF-0 toy, YES all of us if not 96% of us think it is crap. At first no, but later one when the hobby mags launched the devastating PHOTOSPREAD showing ALL the swappable parts JUST to get it into gerwalk, most of us looked at the monitor and said "CURR!!!" So yea that toy has the potential to SUCK. So much part swapping and like graham said, no this toy is not aimed at kids. Although the person who sculpted it, atelair sai, presumably could be a kid. From going from perfect transformable toys of macross plus valkyries long thought to be balls to the wall impossible to make perfect transformable to creating the ultimate VF-1 onmly thought to exist in pipe dreams and biblical scriptures, its quite amazing they give us this piece of trash VF-0 and expect us to welcome it with open arms. Hell banpresto made a bettr PVC toy, a perfect variable VF-1 that though inaccueate, is cheaper AND SMALLER than the VF-0 coming out. Sucks so much even the japanese said worse!! You KNOW its bad when the target market hates it too!! *Note to yamato, rehire nishikawa san, let atelaier said sculpt gashapons of women or something...hell if he messes up part of the sculpt, at least some exageraation won't hurt* LOL

stated before, multirole only works good on BIG fighters, not small light weight. Unless i is the F-16 bu as noyhauser pointed out, that and the YF17 were never even conceieved as multirole to begin with, the F-16 just happens to excel at it but in no way does it carry a weaponsload comparable to the F-15E in terms of payload. JSF is too small and crammed to do everything its asked. Its like asking an F1117 to carry an F-111 weaponsload and add on a bunch of external fuel tanks and some JSTARs randome for extra multirole. OK not that bad but you get the point. For sake of argument lets use F-35C navy,...not as heavy as marine but heavier than airforce.

dont know if I should say this but perhaps MIg-29M, the new Korean KT trainer, and...dunno what else are comparable to JSF for ligth weight fighters. Could the F-2 count>? Me honestly, I just think the JSF is a waste of money and priority, and teh F-16 block whatever is new that the UAE bought, is a more capable fighter. JSF's main strenth is stealth, its no dogfighting demon from hell hell bent on taking on everything A2A like the falcon could be. Then again, for such a successful plane to be replaced, surely flak is expected for the replacement no?

F-35 would suffer a LOT of drag as well with full external payload as well. THe plane aint really that much of a fast mover AS is and some variant is even OVERWEIGHT. Hell some even say the harrier is better.

Maybe even strike 4-FASTER Even against teh F-16....the SF may carry more advanced weaponry like the new laser its getting, but the F-16 is better equipped for A2A and tons more manueverable. Sprry top bring a2a up but come on if your needing a GREAT light wweight fighter to replace the F-16 and succeed it, it damn well SHOULD be able to outknife the viper! me personally would rather see more bigger multiroles, or mission dedicated planes. If your going to do multirole go with tomcat, phantom, or eagle size. Can't cram everything into something small and expect it do something with stuff spaced out in a plane with generous size.
