    The catch phrase for the rest of the series is "If only Kircheis were alive." I agree his death is tragic and in many ways defines much of the story. And since we're spoiling Galactic Heroes, Yang's death is the one that really got me choked up. He was such a great character and how they did that episode made it incredibly heart breaking. Lohengram's death was almost anti-climatic and the emotinal impact it should have had gets kind of lost in the show's ending. Reuentahl's, on the other hand, is very well done as he is probably the true tragic hero (in the classical sense) of the series. For other shows, I'll second Giant Robo (No, not Genrei!!). Spike's, in Cowboy Bebop, was dramatically appropriate; it was foreshadowed from the very beginning and was the only way for things to end. I'll also give a seond to Fushigi Yuugi's death scenes. And who could forget Smith Torren (now if only the real Torren Smith would meet up with some space monsters...).

    The fact that his death was un-heroic and pointless is the whole point. If it had been otherwise, then it wouldn't have made sense. Also, Nadesico isn't really a parody; it's a satire.

    I don't think Predator is at all defining, but it, along with the Alien(s) movies, are important to the genre in that they represent a paradigm shift. Specifically, if you follow the treatment of aliens (small 'a') in SF over the years, you can see various trends. In the 50's, they were BEMs for heroic humans to fight. In the 60's they became superior to us, morally and/or technologically. In the 70's they became just like us, but different. In the 80's, with films like Predator they went back to being BEMs again.

    Back when I was heavily trading fansubs (in the days before digisubs when they were all on tape) I hated trading with people in Canada. Not that I ever had a problem getting the tapes from them, but the tapes I sent would always get held up in customs and either returned to me or I'd have to deal with the other trader gettting upset over not getting their tapes in a timely fashion (or not at all as one guy had the tapes seized for no apparent reason). My experience with the Canadian Customs has guarenteed that I'll never live there.

    Technically not 80's, but the DVDs I'd buy in a heart beat are Tiny Toons and Animaniacs.

    All the ones that come to my mind right away are commedies or dramas, not action SF.

    Episode 1 was awesome (especially love the disclaimer at the beginning). Episode 2 was a solid "meh." I'll have to see more to judge the series as a whole.

    I've liked it so far (through ep. 4). I know a lot of people are probably ready to dismiss because it's a cover of a classic film, but it's such a different medium and setting, it comes through more as a homage than a remake. That and people should keep in mind that Seven Samurai has been remade several times already with varying degrees of success (Magnificent 7, Battle Beyond the Stars, and Three Amigos all come to mind). I'm not a Gonzo fan, but they've put out some decent stuff lately (and a lot of crap too) like Gantz and Last Exile.

    Since this appears to have gone unanswered, BZ&AP was a really lame Saturday morning live action series about some exiled alien prince stuck on earth with his pet robot. They meat up with Benji (the dog from the 70's and 80's movies) and have adventures. And no, it does not deserve a DVD release. As for all the shows being released, a lot of them I'd love to see again, but I don't think I'd watch them enough to justify buying the discs.

    Import it from Japan and sub it yourself. It's the closest thing to being legit. (No, I'm not really being serious, but it is an option)

    Yeah -nyu. I heard that a couple months back -nyu. What really surprises me though is that Synch Point is releasing the original shorts and TV specials -nyu. Last I checked, those were lost forever in licensing hell -nyu. Not that I don't already own most all of it on DVD already -nyu...

    Just realizing you have the rights after 20 years is very suspicious. HG and/or Tatsunoko must have the world's crappiest lawyers working for them if this is the case. Not saying it can't be true, but it does insenuate a high level of incompetence if it is. Thanks! I needed a good laugh to pick me up this morning.

    MSW is essentially correct. It's a style thing that started with Tezuka immitating Disney designs. It's basically stuck in varying degrees.

    The ads for that documentary showing people in plate armor made sure that I didn't bother with it. Putting anachronisms in a work of Arthurian fiction is fine and to be expected. In a documentary though, is stupid.
