Yes - this is true - but still - I'm just saying they were smart to spin it as such and now that my memory of this is slowly returning - I think they also did this to avoid a big fine or something...I dunno... In any event - they presented it as their big Christmas present to people - and that was smart. Even the EU regulators went along with this presentation. I don't know the nitty gritty of it - but my point was to just say that sometimes fighting for asanine IP rights means you'll be relegated to looking at yourself perform in the mirror in your bathroom. If you make a show, a product, a what ever that gains mega popularity - it's inevitable that people are going to use it, ape it, copy it, etc etc etc etc Either you look at this as lost revenue or you look at it as free marketing. If you pick option 1, you will make your lawyers happy, as well as possibly journalists, while customers will not like you. If you pick option 2, you will have to put your thinking cap on and figure out how to profit off of the free marketing. Hasbro has wisely integrated with the fans and always supports local fandoms. Hell - even here in Poland, the local branch of Hasbro provides a server for the local Transformers fan site. But they totally don't interfere in how people play with TFs. They also don't particularly find it evil that the website serves to advertise Bandai, Yamato and other products and other shows that are not Transformers. It's really not so hard to comrehend how the internet works and what its' effect on marketing and so forth are. Harmony Gold are doing themselves a big disservice. It's horrible business. Of course- I could be wrong. It could just be that there are millions of people out there who believe Robotech is the greatest story ever, and that the Toynami products are superb, and that I'm wrong and they're right. Pete

I sense that this new incarnation of this thread has shed all remnants of civility... However - that said -I'll be the first to admit that after digesting the experience of the last thread - it's really difficult to be civil about the whole thing. I mean - HG treats the source material for Robotech like a guy would treat a cheap hooker. They got it for cheap, screwed around with it, and refuse to acknowledge that it's been good to them. Yeah - they "acknowledge" that the originals exist alright - but try talking about Macross- REALLY talking about Macross in their threads and you'll end up like Seto and all the rest. The problem is that any discussion of Macross over at Robotech.com which ISN'T very shallow will get you into trouble. You're basically supposed to treat Macross as a third or fourth rate anime that the geniuses at HG turned into a supreme epic by combining it with two other third or fourth rate anime. There are no big difference between Robotech's Macross Saga and Macross, and it is eminently clear that there's no point discussin the Japanese continuations of Macross on their own merits - because those are just obviously mediocre anime fodder at best, child pornography at worse. Talk about dumb. Imagine if Hasbro treated Takara Tomy products like this. Imagine if Hasbro sent BBTS a letter saying "stop selling those Takara products!" Imagine if Hasbro monitored fan websites and fanzines and... ehh... hell - I honestly can't think of anybody who acts like this. Dag. Even Lucas doesn't do this. I remember when those Star Wars fans made Troops - unless I'm vastly mistaken - didn't Lucas praise them? Jeesus - EVEN MICROSOFT ISN'T THIS ANAL. Last year, on December 25th, Microsoft announced that it would allow something or other browsers or something to carry firefox or something or other (I'm not technically minded - sorry!) - for free in Europe. Microsoft was going to fight it in European Courts - but somebody with brains over at Microsoft realized that protracted multibillion dollar court battles and bad PR were financially worse for the company than just agreeing to let people do what they were doing illegally anyways. Because guess what - Microsoft actually makes MORE money from people's "illegal" activity than what they potentially loose on account of it - or even fighting it. In any case - it was really cool - they hyped it as Microsoft's "Present to Billions of Citizens in the European Union." Talk about a PR victory. I - Joe Nobody, who knows nothing about computers - don't even know what the "it" was - but I heard that Microsoft chose to give it away for free to everybody instead of going to court over it. Great! Obviously creators deserve their due for their creations, and IP and Copyright and patent holders deserve IP, Patent etc protection (generally property protection). But if you open a MacDonalds franchise and put up a sign that says "Management reserves the right to turn you away if your ass is too big or your tits are too small" then... you are going to have a problem with customers. Do you have the right to do it? Yep. Does it make business sense? Nope. HG makes no business sense. The way they run their show is lousy and amateurish. I dunno.. I guess the only thing that sustains them is the ignorance of their own fanbase. But then again - there's plenty of fans of things which I think are stupid. So I guess Robotech is just one more of those things... Pete

I have a question about this whole "nurly" vs. non-nurly pins issue... My VF-1S first edition (I got it when the thing came out - immediately - probably one of the first out of the factory) is just fine. I've transformed it a zillion times and there's no breakage at the shoulders. I just checked the pins on my VT-1. They seem to be nurly - at least - I think so...compared to my VF-1J Max (new blue) - they are...Max clearly has some straight pins... But - neither of them are broken. Has it definitely been established that the PINS have anything to do with the breakages? I had a second VF-1S Fokker which had its' shoulder broken at the hinge IN THE BOX. That was the only version 2.0 QC casualty. Everything else I own is fine - nurly or not nurly. Furthermore - it seems to me that the only possible way to snap the plastic at the shoulder hinge is to pull up too hard when trying to get the hinge over the "speed bump" (my word for the protrusion the hinge needs to get over when swinging the arms out in order to lock them into place for Gerwalk [and Battroid] mode. If you pull up too hard, you put some pretty big pressure on those hinges. If you don't pull, but just push, you will end up bashing the plastic portion of the hinge against that speed bump thing, weakining it - since on the one hand you'll have the tension from the pin and on the other hand the tension from the pushing against the plastic. You just need to use a very fluid motion to get it over the "bump" and into place. The hinge itself is attached to a "loose" plastic bit that is hel on a metal screw - and is PURPOSFEULLY loose - in the sense that as you life the arm up over the bump, the loose bit that the hinge is attached to lifts a little bit and then lowers to settle down over the bump when you lock the shoulder hinge in place. That loose bit is what gives you the flexibility to manipulate the shoulder joint without doing harm to it. Another area where you need to be careful is if the ball joint on the shoulder is fitted too tight. You need to loose that up by holding the hinge cube and moving the shoulder - rotating it a bit - until you feel the tension ease... Although this was only a problem on one of the many Valkyrie I have. I dunno... Don't mean to suggest members are being overly rough but... I find it strangely incredible that Yammie after Yammie I get is just fine. I have gotten one broken in the box - but unless I'm mistaken - lots of members are reporting breakeages, stress lines etc happening after a few transformations? I dunno... Just sounds wierd. As for Yamato using old stock VF-1Js... well... I have an "old stock" VF-1J Hikaru. I got it when it first came out. I used to actually have two of them. Both of them were in tip top condition. One got sold. The other remains - and is still in tip top condition. In fact - he's on my avatar pointing at Minmey's butt Pete party pooper Lucky?

The Amazing Spider-Man, on Blu-Ray/DVD Nov. 9, 2012

Blessed are the not-super popular Franchises, for they shall inherit the movie goers' praise. Terminator, Alien, Macross, I can't seem to name more off the top of my head. Woe be upon those franchises that get too big for their burches...briches?...pants... For they will reboot moe times than a malfunctioning Dell laptop before it explodes (although...I don't actually know if it needed to reboot or if it just blew up first....or if that was a rumor)... For they will be done to death, leaving the viewer with a bad taste in their mouths, kind of like what you get after visiting the same prostitute over and over...well...no...not really...depends on the prostitute...but the analogy is week... Ok - I can't write in verse! ANyways - I do agree - Spiderman origin movies, like Batman origin movies - hell - like almost ALL origin movies I ignore like the plague. Transformers 2007 was an exception because it was the first live action TF film.... But God forbid that when I'm 40, I see an add for "They look like your everyday cars and trucks...but they are more...so much more..." You know what... Spiderman really just need a TV SERIES. Yep. Why? Because he needs some new adventures - not the rehashing of the same old same old that Marvel comics and a dozen movies did already anyways. A TV series means the story can go in some interesting directions... I'm thinking of the Bill Bixby Incredible Hulk with Lou Feringo in the 80s - that was an AWESOME TV series - likely my favorite one. Better than the A-Team even! Pete -
Actually, I use this honey-scented gel for my hair. Sometimes use hair spray (although I hate the kind that stiffens your hair and makes it look like a dog humped your head). I have natural colored hair - never used any bleach. It doesn't mortally offend me on other people though. Pete

Oh for F@CKS SAKE!!! Sorry - but this is just retarded - I mean - look at this...in the link that was posted above to Protoculture addicts: http://www.colonydrop.com/index.php/2010/0...ddicts-4?blog=1 I quote: I sweat o God - I have never seen a robber being so persistent in protecting his loot from other robbers. I mean - sh!t! Artists who actually create their own Intellectual Property are not usually as stubborn about "defending" it as Harmony Gold is about defending its' stolen bootlegged loot. How can Robotech fans stand it? Robotech fans were - Lied to about the origins of Robotech - Decieved into thinking there is no continuation of Macross - Lied to about what constitutes anime - Bullied and threatened I mean...please... in the UK, TF fans created an entire comic book run - Transformers: The Continued Generation 2. People like Nick Roche, who now works at IDW as an artist, was one of the fans who did the art for the comic book. It was sold for money (not at a profit, but to cover printing costs) - and everything was fine. When the internet started up - tons of Fansites and fanfics and fanzines were developed. Hasbro was super wise to let the fire spread and not stamp it out.... HG "gives ultimatums" What the F... What a bunch of morons. They deserve to go bankrupt for treating their fans like this. Jeezus. What's next HG? Maybe you want to install cameras in Robotech fans homes to see if...heavens forbid...they aren't using the Toynami products in a manner that goes against the Terms of Use on Robotech.com? I mean - you know - I HAVE seen a couple of pictures here at Macrossworld of Toynami products interacting with...Yamato products! Hell - even with Bandai products (and Bandai did steal Macross from you - right...I mean... in Macross Frontier, there's a VERITECH fighter on top of Alto's school...you need to send Bandai an ultimatum about that, don't you?) It's really not possible to stop talking about Doug Bendo under the auspicies of Doug being a troll, because judging from how HG as a company functions - they are the trolls. Shadow Chronciles is 2 hours of trolling. I'm just incredulous at how they operate. It's pathetic! Some French kids get excited by their stupid show and create a magazine and they get an ultimatum!! Ahh... whatever.. This is "retarted" I'll echo the poster above: THANK GOD FOR THE INTERNET!! Pete

The Amazing Spider-Man, on Blu-Ray/DVD Nov. 9, 2012
VFTF1 replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Hm. I saw the first one in the cinema and enjoyed it - seemed to be the Spiderman I remembered from the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko Amazing Adventure #15 all right... I bought the second one of DVD because I was bored and needed something to watch while drinking beer and eating pizza. It was ok - but I regret buying it because I never watched it again and usually I only buy the DVD if I know I'm gonna want to watch it multiple times. Saw the trailer for the third one, happy with the idea - but felt no inclination to actually go see it. But this might be due to the fact that... I WANT JAPANESE SPIDERMAN!! I hope the reboot features LEOROBOZORGO or whatever his name was! Spier Man! Spider Man! Get into your chogokin like only you can! Spide man! Spider man! HENKEI HENKEI SPIDER MAN!! Pete -
I'd be very happy with the VF-17 - hopefully it'll be Gamlin. It's a radically different model from what they've done up to now. This might be me being late but - coul Yamato be bothered to also make some figures of the human cast from DYRL at least? They make great statues from other anime...why not DYRL? Or - even better - their super poseable Queen's Blade figure shows they can also make excellent poseable figures - once again - could we get something like that from DYRL? I do remember the Minmey doll they made - but I don't know if many people were keen on it, since the doll body was not anime accurate sculpted but rather just a standard doll body. I'm sure they can do better. Would be nice if they could hear that there's big demand for human figures too. Pete

I'm back with another thread! Dear Harmony Gold, Why do you zero in on Yamato in your BS crusade against companies which produce Macross merchandise, but it looks like MAV has no problem when discussion turns to Kaiyodo Macross merchandise? http://www.robotech.com/community/forum/re...&forumid=23 Or is that HG is ok with discussing Japanese companies producing Macross goods, so long as they are relatively crap Macross goods that are aesthetically possibly even worse than Toynami's 1/100 line? Confused Pete

Finally two people in a row who had a similar experience to mine - namely never having seen the Robotech tv show ANYWHERE on TV while a kid. I do remember the Palladium books - and to repeat for the zillionth time I really liked them. However - I guess I can now better understand Robotech fans. They're like Transformers fans who were raped AS CHILDREN rather than having their childhoods raped later by Michael Bay. That is to say - as much as some TF fans complain about the direction of the franchise recently, we (including myself here since I am one) will ALWAYS have G1 to go back to, and BW if you were into it. Meanwhile, a Robotech fan grows up, gets nostalgic, but discovers that the show he remembers from childhood was a big fake. Oh well... I'm off to browse Robotech.com to look for people to point fingers at and laugh uncontrollably. Ah. Now that sounds more reasonable. I have never been big on fantasy, but I could give this a try on the basis of you saying "surprisingly well thought out classical fantasy elements in modern day" settings. I have never really lliked magic. Super robot "anime magic" is fine because I always take it to be kind of like artistic license mixed with science fiction - but fantasy in a pure D&D type sense always annoyed the hell out of me. It always made me think of weak cop out plots where characters are stuck in a rut and somebody just says "Abra Cadabra!" and the thing resolves itself. I'm also completely not into any kind of romantization of pre-industrial life usually. All good pre-modern works simply have great human characters and great dramatic plots to them. It's kind of like - a modern setting with lots of FX and flashy gizmos but no plot sucks to me. So...also a midievil or pre-modern setting which attempts to romanticize... uh...never mind - turning into another long post... Point is - this sounds remotely interesting. And I think Saber is hot in her regular clothes - not so much in that Knight outfit... Tohsaka Rhin, on the other hand...I dunno... Maybe if I got to know the characters, I'd like it? Thing is - there was surprisingly little available to see on Youtube when last I checked - and I usually like sampling anime etc on Youtube to get a flavor for it. Pete

Pff. Neatly eclipsed by Transformers Generation 1 is putting it mildly. Robotech was eclipsed by Transformers, GI Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Real Ghostbusters, Inspector Gadget, Hiethcliff, Silverhawks, Thundercats, Gummy Bears, Winnie The Pooh.... I could go on. But seriously - much as I love Macross...unless you were living in California or Texas or something... you likely didn't see Robotech. At least I didn't. Pete
-
I still haven't seen this, and probably won't. I heard one pretty bad review on the radio - the dude was saying that the film totally lacks plot and is predictable and the characters are shallow. On the other hand, lots of people who have seen it keep saying "best movie of 2009" ... but I think they just say it because it sounds trendy - since it was also pretty much the LAST movie of 2009... I dunno... I can't see myself getting enthusiastic about it - which means seeing it is unlikely, since I need to be enthusiastic about a movie to go see it.... Pete
-
So Fate/Stay Night is like Icky Toes Blend? Hot girls fighting and taking off their cloths? :/ Meh. I have the Revoltech Tohsaka Rhin. I always thought the figure, as well as the character design, were very good. Too bad it sounds like story story is basically Mortal Kombat Playboy version. I have nothing against it, but sexually it doesn't turn me on and I guess if it doesn't turn you on then it's like watching bad porn... no story...porn not interesting in and of itself...yawn. Pete

I just saw a movie yesterday called Revers, that I think qualifies as "Real Post-Apocalyptic" - although here in Poland, it merely qualifies as a drama. Some Background: My beautiful Misa asked me to take her to see this movie, but for some reason, I muddled things up. She had been going on and on about some romantic comedy with Meryl Streep last week, and this week she said "take me to see Revers." For some reason, even as we sat down in the cinema, I was convinced that this "Revers" thing was going to be a romantic comedy with Meryl Streep. Boy was I wrong. How is this film Post-Apocalyptic?: Most post-apocalyptic movies take place immediately after a cataclysmic event during which millions of people died, civilization as it was known was whiped out, usually there are no buildings left standing, everybody is dead - and while some semblence of remotely human existence remains - well...it is only a facade masking the trauma of a horribly scarred world. A classic of the genre is Mad Max - wherein Max, like any other cop who needs a break, takes his family for a vacation - but this idylic story becomes subject to the specific dangers of a post-apocalyptic world. Well - Revers is Poland's Mad Max... although it's a lot more subtle and...tellingly; it's got a lot to do with culture whether or not you'll find it terrifying. My Misa (who is Polish) found Mad Max terrifying. She sweated and shivered. The whole thing was so alien to her, and so frightening. But during Revers, she laughed at the humorous parts (I couldn't) and certainly didn't break a sweat (whereas for me - the movie was depressing). I think this might be cultural. Revers, unlike Mad Max, is not a fantasy. It is a realistic portrayal of a historicall documented post-apocalypse. SETTING: The movie takes place in...1949.. or...no 1952. I'm fairly sure it's 1952 - one year before Stalin's death. Warsaw was completely burned to the ground in 1945 and roughly 10 million people in the country were killed during world war II (civilians only - counting of course people killed in Auschwitz). Between 1945 and 1952 (the year the movie takes place), the communists systematically purged anybody who was wealthy, creative, educated or independent. The idea was to leave alive only the people who were stupid, people who were women (weak), and people who were children (easy to raise and exploit). Thus, the movie qualifies, IMO, as a 100% Post-Apocalyptic film, since the story of the movie takes place after 10 years during which time cities were burned to the ground, millions of people were slaughtered, and human civilization basically came to an end and was replaced by murder, rape and general barbarism. The Exoteric Plot The family who are the focus of the movie used to have a house, but their house was confiscated by the government and turned into a ministry, while the family itself was moved to an apartment building where they now live. The family consists of the Mother (played by Krystyna Janda who is a fairly well known Polish actress..at least well known in Germany too), the Grandmother, and the Mother's two children - Sabina and Arkady. It is never mentioned what happened to the children's father, or Grandfather, but it is safe to assume that since they were men - they were killed during the war. Perhaps the grandfather died of natural causes earlier. In any case we don't know. Anyways - the exoteric plot of the movie is seductively normal. Sabina is a young girl - probably in her early 20s or lat teens, who works in a publishing house, in the department dealing with poetry. Her main job is to "convince" poets to bend to the will of Stalinist censors and put their poetry in the service of communist ideals. On a daily basis, however, her job is editing texts. Her mother's main preoccupation is trying to find a suitable husband for Sabina. The story unfolds as the mother tries to track down good husbands for Sabina. An Accountant visits and has dinner with them, trying to impress Sabina with his excellent mathematical memory. He is like a walking calculator - ask him what 25345 times 5254 is and he'll have the answer immediately. He's also...not Sabina's type, to say the least. There is also one other element in the Exoteric plot: namely a silver US Dollar. The government issues a decree whereby all citizens were obligated to turn over all gold and silver or foriegn money in their posession - and Sabina's mother had discovered that they had a silver US Dollar in their home. In a wonderful scene, the Mother says "look..it says liberty on it! It's illegal silver, it's American, and it says liberty - we'll all be killed for sure!" Anyways - there is some heavy debate about how to get rid of this US Dollar. They don't know what to do with it. Finally, Sabina lies - saying that she'll take it and dispose of it - but instead - she proceeds to swallow it. She swallows it every evening, and then sh!ts it out the next morning - rinses it - and swallows it again. This procedure is shown in some detail over and over and is meant to be humerous. Why won't she just give it back or throw it away, you ask? Simple: If she takes it to the government to give it back as the law prescribes, then the government will no doubt be curious about where she got it in the first place? The government would then likely send agents to her apartment to search the apartment, and even if they didn't find any more gold or silver, they would most likely find other things of interest which they would then steal for their own personal use. In any event - going to the government with the coin would just invite trouble. So...why not just toss it out the window or into the trash? Because - someone might see. And everyone is a spy. You see - as mentioned above - everyone intelligent, educated, courageous and brave is - in general - dead. The only people left are the ones who are stupid, old, quiet or cowardly (again in general). This is 1952 - the height of Stalinism in Poland and following a world war during which time human life was cheap. If the girl goes to throw the coin outside - someone will see her - they will rummage in the trash and find the coin and report her and she and her family will all be hung. Or at least that's the fear. Only youn Arkady - who seemed to have been a small boy during the war - does not see any problem. "Just throw it away." he says. But the girls are more careful. One last bit of Exoteric plot: Fast Forward to the year 2009. Sabina is 80 years old and gets into a taxi to drive to the airport in Warsaw, where she waits for a flight from JFK in NY which has been delayed. Naturally, we the audience wonder who it is that she's waiting for? All in all, the exoteric plot shows a humorous aspect to Stalinism - namely how it made people paranoid. Sabina's swallowing and crapping out the silver coin are kind of the main example of this. Also, the exoteric plot focuses heavily on something very normal in human lives - namely the quest of a young girl for love and her mother's insistence that she needs to find a husband. Finally - after many attempts - Sabina meets a fine handsome young man, who saves her from two muggers. He's tall and dashing, wears a Bogart like trenchcout, and has a cigarrette dangling out of his mouth at all times. After punching the mugger who assailed Sabina, making him give her purse back and apologize to the girl, he galantly holds out his arm and escorts Sabina home. The young man calls on Sabina again and again with flowers, takes her to the movies, and generally the two of them fall more and more in love. Finally - Sabina happily asks her mother if she might invite someone home, and she invites the young man who meets her family. Everything is going along well. At this point, the movie could well have just become a nice romantic comedy or romantic melodrama about Sabina's quest for a husband during somewhat difficult times. If it had - it wouldn't have qualified as Post Apocalyptic. But - it is the esoteric plot - which had been boiling beneath the surface - that qualifies it so. The Esoteric Plot Finding himself alone with Sabina, the young man brutally rapes her. After brutally raping her, he asks to marry her, and also reveals his real job. He is an agent of the Communist Party and he wants Sabina to become a spy. Specifically, he wants Sabina to spy on her boss at the publishing house who is suspected of having un-clean thinking. The man also blackmails Sabina saying: "Do you think we don't know about the silver coin you swallow and crap out every morning? We know." Sabina, having been raped and shown that even what she does in her bathroom is known to the Party, is shocked. However, she collects herself, excuses herself, and goes to fetch some more vodka for the gentleman. While in the kitchen, she opens the cupboard and takes a vile of poison out, pours it into the vodka, stirs, and then brings out the drink to the young man. The man takes a drink and slowly looses all of his muscle functions - including his lungs, heart and brain - over the course of 15 minutes. While watching him die, Sabina apologizes, saying "I'm sorry it's taking so long for you to die - but I couldn't find any stronger poison." After he is dead, Sabina takes his gun and considers blowing her brains out - but for some reason - she doesn't. When her mother returns home, they take the man's body up to the attic, where, using a variety of chemical agents (Sabina's mother is a chemist), they creat an acid which slowly burns all the flesh, veins, skin and muscles covering the man's skeleton until he is nothing but bones. They then take the skeleton apart, stuff it in various bags, and over the course of a few weeks, throw those bags away in various spots - into the river, in the garbage, leaving one bag of bones at the train station, at a bus stop etc etc In the end, it turns out Sabina is pregnant with the man's child. She wants to get an abortion. However, Sabina's grandmother says to her "you can't blame him for raping you and decieving you. It is most likely that the communists threatened to murder his whole family if he did not go to work for them. Besides, the child is innocent." Fast Forward to 2009. Sabina is still waiting at the airport - but finally, a man steps out of the Arrival Hall to meet her - it is her son, who looks very much like his father. He has come back from the USA to visit his old Polish mama. They are happy to see eachother. Once a year, Sabina regularly visits the place where she burried the skull of the man who raped her - and lights a candle at his grave - happy to have his wonderful son. The end. --- So - there you have it. This is a real Post-Apocalyptic film. It has all the terror and surrealism of your best sci-fi post-apocalyptic movies.... with the one qualifier being that it is set in times that really happened and shows situations that likely were routine in those times. Pete

Dag. So many unlucky people... I wonder - are Japanese forums also full of this many unlucky people? I had the 1/48 Hikaru 1J and it was extremely sturdy - like all the 1/48s. The only down side was aesthetic - the chicken hands and the nose was too long. I prefer the look of the 1/60 version 2.0 - which I now have - and it's yummy. But all of the 1/48s I had were superb.
