  1. It should be adequate, remember 700:1 is just a statistic and thus not a true reflection of the monitor's black levels. A monitor with 500:1 contrast could have a better picture than a 700:1. In terms of quality picture, there is still nothing that can beat a CRT. I recommend checking lots of reviews sites and forums for the best 19 inch monitor.
  2. Also wanted to add that the Animigo release is progressive while the ADV release is interlaced. For all those with progressive scan dvd players you will once again benefit hugely from the Animeigo release.
  3. Wow thats awesome. My rating of this release has just gone up. I was so sure we wouldn't see any on screen text translations. If you can find the model number on your dvd player, i could have a quick look to see if there is a hack for it.
  4. What dvd player brand and model do you have? There are lots of codes on the web to make your player region free.
  5. They reused some animation in the final fight between Guyver I and II but it still eclipses the fight in the OVA series for the same scene which ended rather quickly. The fact that Guyver II was a woman was also extremely awesome! And the unneccessary fan service was just a bonus. I personally liked the fact it was less true to the manga, it actually allowed the OVA to be significantly darker in tone. And the soundtrack is defintly one of my all time favourites. I want a DVD release!
  6. I still think the original Guyver OVA from 1986 is the most superior Guyver adapatation. Just check out the awesome
  7. My crazy animation on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tHplRqX02A Feedback please - i'm serious Thanks guys!
  8. I sent some emails to customer service about a year ago and they clearly stated they had no intent on relicensing the show. So now i hope ADV or Media Blasters will pick it up for commercial release.
  9. It may not alter the direction of the story but it does change the atmosphere of that scene. This is not a huge issue but since i want the show in it's complete original form then looking for alternatives is fine with me. I personally am still going to buy the R1 release.
  10. All the reviews for the R1 release state it includes the matted version only. If you want all the extras on the R2, i recommend the cheaper R3 found at Yesasia
  11. Yeh the seller who is obviously from Hong Kong obviously doesn't understand English too well. That bootleg set contains episodes 1-24 compressed over 3 discs and is a rip of the Japanese dvds. As with all HK bootlegs, the subtitle translations are practically useless and the video quality suffer from extreme compression. You used to be able to get the sets on Ebay for around $20, shame the seller is trying to rip people off with inflated prices, probaly because its out of print. EDIT - Here is a cheaper price for the set
  12. Wow Mercurial Morpheus, thanks for taking the time to ask all the questions at the con and post all the awnsers here. We all knew it was coming, i'm over the moon to finally see a proper release this masterpiece of a movie. Nooooooo! Of all the series it had to happen to Gunbuster The chariots of fire parody music was fantastic. It always puzzles me when copyright issues arise. This was never an issue with the US Rendition's release in 1990 and the Manga re-release in 1996 on vhs. So why now? Hmm, I might now import buying the Region 2 verison from Japan or the Region 3 from Korea to supplement my Region 1 purchase. Can you also post this on the animeondvd forums?
  13. Many people consider SPT Layzner to be the greatest of all the 80's mech shows. Even today it's considered way ahead of it's time. Shame Bandai's blue tinted masters got in the way of their release, blame Sunrise for blocking any hope of a replacement for the damaged masters. EDIT - here is a review of SPT Layzner box set 1 over at animeondvd
  14. DeepDiscountDvd has it for $43 with Free Shipping
  15. Exactly, if fans want to watch it dubbed then buy the old Robotech release. Carl Macek may have had an awful habit of editing everything he was associated with but at least he had excellent taste in hiring decent voice actors. His Streamline dubs in particular are seen as some of the best ever.
  16. Awesome Pictures! Hehe and good job in geting Macross more exposure. It really is the flagship title for geting fans into the older anime. I also believe the Animeigo sets were initially sold at $250 and then gradually priced down as time went.
  17. VS CPM Area 88 OVA (Left) + Uncut Original Release Act I (Uncut Act II on LD and VHS only) + Very Cheap (as little as $1) - Unremastered Video & Sound Quality - Medicore Subtitle Translations - No Extras - Inferior Cover Art ADV Area 88 OVA (Right) + Stunning New Video & Audio Transfer + More Accurate Subtitle Translations + Superior Cover Art + Extras include Interviews and Documentary. - Acts I and II combined to form movie with changes made (see below) - Here are the changes made when Acts I and II were combined into a movie: 3 seconds of music changed right at the end of Act 1 Opening Credits which can be detected instantly when the Unicorn logo flashes and makes a ping sound. 2 minute Scene omited where Kanzaki is having a conversation with Ryoko in a cafe in Tokyo. Important since it expands the two characters. Scene where Ryoko and her father (president of Yamato Airlines) talk about her marriage has been brought forward into Act 1 before Shin is shot down in his F-8 Crusader. This scene was always part of Act II especially since it was even included in the preview. 3 minute credits and preview removed from Act I. The credits were a montage of pictures from Act I playing to the music used at the end of Act II's credits. The preview which used poetic narration also helped expand the atmosphere and emotion in Area 88. 3 second scenes in Act II omited when a soldier steps into a trap in Vietnam. I couldn't detect any more changes in Act II however it's possible some more minor changes were made. I will confirm when i locate and buy the LD for Act II. Act III is completely the uncut and the same as all previous versions. Only Acts I and II that were combined and edited for it's theoretical release in 1986. It's a mystery to me why they chose the movie version to remaster, maybe the masters were in better condition, who knows? Hopefully in the future they will remaster the original release format as well. Conclusion: Buy both dvds for completist sake since ADV is remastered yet misses 1 vital scene, few minor ones and the poetic credits and preview.
  18. Your right, i think my brain freezed over. Let me change the list..
  19. Roundup of some of the best bargains i've found for 80's anime: Rightstuf.com Genesis Climber Mospeada - $24.99 Southern Cross - $24.99 Cleopatra DC - $3.99 BestBuy.com Gundam Zeta (Vol 1-3) - $11.99
  20. Doh! Once again the art of scrolling has failed me, lol.
  21. Anyone on the fence about buying the Votoms dvd box set for $60 should take a look at these pictures: Click Here for Votoms Dvd Box Set Pictures
  22. The new release by Bandai Visual has been reviewed at AOD: Click Here for the Gunbuster dvd review DeepDiscountDvd has it for preorder at $43 which is the cheapest price on the web.
  23. I think i also forgot to mention that the ADV discs have compression artifacts since they tried to squeeze to many episodes with extras on to a disc. So Animeigo set even after all this time still wins in the Video, Audio and Extras department. Also here are a list of the hidden extras in the Animeigo set: . On all volumes of Macross, go to "Settings" then highlight "Subtitles Off/Japanese Audio" and go left. The highlight will disappear. Hit enter and you'll be taken to a test pattern. . On disk nine of the Macross box set there's a hidden slideshow of 52 character and mecha designs. You can access it by going to the settings menu then go to the main menu button and press down and then enter. Set back and enjoy the slide show. .On DVD #8 when the main menu loads up press the "8" button on your DVD remote control and a music video comes on. . On DVD #9 for MACROSS TV, there is a third audio track with a second subtitle track which is an interview with the creator of MACROSS TV series. It starts on episode 35 and finishes on episode 36. . On the main menu, keep episode "Lonely Song" highlighted, hit left on the remote or on a keyboard, and hit enter.
  24. This TV series made and broadcasted in 1986 is defintly one of the most intelligent and diverse shows i've ever seen. Every story is so different and unique from the last that every tale has a refreshing feel to it. If you have to start with one dvd then i recommend picking up Harp of Burma/ Season of the Sun dvd. Both are exceptional stories and Season of the Sun is one of those romantic tales that will appeal to everyone. Central Park Media released 12 episodes on dvd but all 35 on VHS. If you really love it you can buy the remaining episodes off Amazon or wait for it to be released in a dvd box set in Japan. Anyway here are the dvds at $6 each: Harp of Burma 1 & 2/ Season of the Sun Izu Dancer, The/ The Dancing Girl/ A Ghost Story Botchan 1&2/ Student Days Sound Of Waves 1&2/ Growing Up
