Macross Δ (Delta) - Mission 19 - READ 1st POST

After this episode I am almost certain they'll wrap it all up by Episode 26. A massive info dump like this is usually to get as much story/explanation as they can outta the way, so they can "move forward". The strange part is that Shoji pretty much gave all of this away in one of his recent interviews so there was almost nothing new to me. The only thing I found interesting in this episode is that the Windermeres have build in fold receptors. An info dump like this is actually consider bad writing because it shows that they have no clever ways to integrate all the necessary information piece by piece into the natural flow of the story. And is that Berger guy really necessary to show up and tell us everything in such straightforward manner? They could've easy structured this episode with the Walkurie members feeling suspicious about the events from last episode (especially with Arad and Kagame's conversation regarding hiding secrets) and have Reina & Makina do some hacking and espionage to find out all of this within Chaos. Everybody could've played a part in it without having to just stand around listening to some theory! Did they forget that all these girls have exceptional abilities? Character development can be done without the need of shady guy showing up and hogging up all the scenes. You have so many characters in the show already SO USE THEM in a fun or interesting way instead of shoving them aside for someone that the audience generally don't give a rats ass about. Having grown up with cheap production, poorly animated TV anime as a kids, I generally find that most anime today is still visually far ahead of shows back before 2000. So stuff like still animation or poor animation quality don't really bother me. But what ticks me off is the outdated way of storytelling directions, anime cliches, and dialogues and they still employ for this show. Characters act and say things on cue like they have no idea how to move and develop them forward in a more believable sense. Have you ever seen Maico 2010? That anime had no budget, was 15 minutes per episode, and was stuck inside a radio broadcast office the entire series but was exceptional in character development and good dialogues. Every character had a distinctive personality, up and down journey arc, unexpected twist and satisfying ending. She's really Hatsune Miku! That would actually be an awesome twist! And then we find out Berger is also the Star Singer! But as predictions goes it's probably gonna be either Mikumo or Freyja. -

I tend to think every Macross series since the original feels like ideas from something else being tailored into Macross. If you rewatch the first episode and make a comparison to where thing have gotten now you'll see a drastic change in overall direction. Not to mention several interesting elements are dropped overtime. The very cool/fun idea of dancing battroid action scenes are all gone in favor of generic dog fights since episode 6. I would totally get a kick outta seeing Hayate confuse the crap outta all the windermere pilots and beating his opponents with break dancing moves. BUT NOPE. No more of that. Chuck being shown as a cocky pilot in calling himself "Chuck-sama to the rescue" the first episode with his "submarine attack" is also nonexistent ever since. The seemingly powerful Aerial Knights are also swept to the wayside without any further development in character or special fighting skills for most of them. It makes we wonder if Shoji took off from Delta half way through and became more devoted to his "next project" already. I find myself rewatching Plus because of it's great action sequences and Sharon apple concerts but tend to skip over all the "plot stuff". Plus was not all that great in it's writing as well. It had good characters but none of them had a real arc in terms of change or development. -

The confusion comes from this episode being jammed a lot of information on screen in rapid fire. It's not the plot aspect but the visual information given. There are several confusing images cutting from one scene to another, some psychological and some perhaps symbolic mixed in with actual events occurring. Several times before I can grasp what is happening visually it suddenly cuts in another point-of-view and then quickly cuts into another separate scene. All this do fall under the strength of the director's pacing and visual storytelling, and it is not handled well in this episode. -
You guys have no idea what you're missing out!

The latest episode felt clunky and disjointed in cutting between the songs and action. Was not a smooth ride at all. One of the key problem I still have is not explaining the Windermere's powers clearly. Psychic connections like Newtypes? That would kinda suck if it is the case. Al the characters are so colorful and upbeat it become a strange contrast when they try to move the plot into darker territories. At this point I kinda wish Delta gets 2 seasons to see more development for all the characters. -

I find the character moments more fun and interesting that the actual war story in Delta. When I watch Delta, were are many moments that makes me think of what Shoji said in one of his interview of how he originally intended to revolve the story and characters around the idea of aerial competitions. Uncertain Cosmic Movement scene from episode 4 and concert sequences from the latest episode really makes think how much more fitting those songs and atmosphere would be if he went in that direction. He's work on cyber formula (a race car show) before and I can easily see how all the Delta characters could've gone in that route without the need to stick them into the backdrop of a war. -

Frontier in my opinion was still more consistent in it's pacing and tone. It had a overall seriousness, not to mention almost all the major characters had an arc for character development. It was a much smoother ride in comparison. I thought it was one of the best out of the franchise (even better than Plus in plot and character development). -

For me it's been somewhat of a weird experience watching Macross Delta. The show constantly throws in elements that are jarring contrast to the serious underlying plot of war and death. Several episodes ago there was an eventful death of a major character and now the latest one is wacky fun happy concert stuff with slapstick comedy peppered in. I find myself enjoying this series scene by scene in pieces. But as an overall cohesive show when I have to stop and think about it... tone, pacing and character development issues become more and more apparent, and it doesn't feel like the story is unfolding organically at all. Information and revelation are tossed-in in a very clunky manner sometimes. Almost all the characters are likable, but it feel like the show needs another 26 episodes just to so it can to do them all justice. Now, on the other hand, I've been running episodes of Macross Delta in the summer camp art class I've been teaching and all the girls ranging from 13 to 16 are going nuts over it. They respond to the magical girl stuff, singing, budding romance scenes, and all the good looking bishonans like rabid dogs. They even eat up all the giant robots and aerial dog fights too calling it epic. So my conclusion is that the show is not really geared toward us old Macross folkies anymore, Shoji's main target audience is the new generation of female otaku and fujoshi and it's hitting them dead center! -

Just saw the subs. Hmm... Not only is the city ship's energy level needs to be charged up, the fan service level also needs to be charged up in this episode! -

Had some time to work on more page layouts. I drew the VF-171 using reference pics and photos found on the internet. But the day after completion I received the little Bandai kit and realized how the contour and details were wrong, so I had to redraw the whole plane again.

Yes it did. It's a dialogue heavy episode so they spent less. I've noticed this kind of up and downs with most shoji-directed productions. Bigger budget tends to be placed on episodes where songs & CGs are more necessary. This even dates back to Escaflowne days, where episode 19 looked dirt cheap but the very next one when there's royal wedding taking place, the art quality shot way back up. There was also a noticeable quality difference between episode 1 of Delta and the rest of the episodes as well. The first episode looked like a movie production. The way the characters were drawn, the pacing, dynamics, camera works, and color palette had a stronger visual grandeur than the rest of the series. You put your money & your best guys at where it's needed!- 162 replies
