The computer and electronics super geek thread

Home Basic is only available in a few countries and has restricted activation. If not in one of those countries it's likely it won't work at all. Home Premium has Media Center. I seriously doubt DDR3 will last long enough as an architecture to need/warrant 10+ gigs before DDR4 or something else hits the market. Not to mention that Windows 7 is a stopgap for the other OS MS plans to release within the next 3 years. Also, if upgrading any version of Windows 7, use the anytime upgrade. It's a hell of a lot cheaper. You don't get the discs but for most people that's really not important. -

My friend and I had the cost conversation a few days ago. I think it's negligible. Lucas would have to use his own people, his own technology and time to redo anything in these movies. Short of the costs associated with that, he's not paying a 3rd party through the nose to do it. That versus what these movies have made and still continue to make plus what the blu-rays are going to add would have to nullify almost ANY cost associated with the movies without fully refilming ALL of them.

My buddy was on FB having a heart attack over some sounds up north in Portland. http://www.kxly.com/news/24665004/detail.html I would have loved to have heard it.

Unless you somehow get a super old card, it'll do sound too. If not, you can get an external USB sound card from creative for less than $50 with optical support. -

When getting someone local you need to be careful. There are a lot of people who seem like they know a lot (IE, some of the people I've worked with) and there are people who actually know their poo. The Zentrans as you are calling yourselves trust people that sound like they know what they are talking about WAY too easily. I do understand it's hard to find the ones who do. I don't know how many people I get every single day who heard from some high school kid, who is a friend of a friend of a friends, cousin's, brother's nephew taking 1st year computers that they should never, ever pay or really even use anti-virus protection, that limewire is amazing, that because they've never heard of Asus it must be terrible and a dual core just means you're paying more. When I work on the side I charge no less than $40 an hour just to be competitive with the local "professionals" and to give people a sense of paying for a service. I can't tell you how much business I lost because people didn't trust someone who did it for lunch or for "so much less than <insert shop name here>. I give everyone the option of checking elsewhere before they pay for anything from us. We have two other computers stores/shops in Modesto besides the two BBYs and a couple Staples. Some don't come back, most do. One of the biggest things I can say about BBY that we'll be here at least a few more years down the road and in that time we'll continue to be able to back up what we service. It's just finding the right store to get taken care of properly. -

None taken at all. There are two stores where I live. One in Modesto, and one basically on the outskirts on the other side of town in a town called Riverbank. I work at the one in Riverbank and we've had to report the Modesto store more than once for bad practices to our HQ. We used to get stories all day long about how people would go in there and ask a question, then come to us and ask the same question only to be told something completely different and a lot less expensive. I stopped shopping at the Modesto store long before I ever worked at the other. I'll be one of the first to admit BBYs prices aren't all that great, but where I live they are down right cheap compared to the two computer stores we have in town. It all depends on who you get and what you want. Most of the time a quick diagnostic/fix won't cost anything because it'll bandaid the existing issue, we'll give suggestions and it most likely sells a new system because of the cost of parts and repairs. If they do an in-depth scan and find a bunch of stuff using our software, we won't offer the quick fix because it won't work. We give them a list of what needs to be fixed. Again, usually sells a new system because of repair costs and parts. I don't know that exact name of the diagnostic program we use but BBY also owns a tech firm stationed back east somewhere that remotely does a lot of our work for us to save time as well. Your fears aren't unwarranted, but we're not all bad and the reality is, if we don't do it, someone else will and usually not as good and without the guarantees. -

$100 for a quad Athlon II. $120 for a DDR3 motherboard. Roughly $100 for 4gigs of DDR3. $100-150 for a decent ATI card that supports HDMI. Case, power supply, optical drive(s), OS and skill to build it aside, the above is more than decent for what you need and within your budget shipped. -
Took me like 10 minutes on BBTS to find it because of that. =\

Dumb question, but who is Peg? Edit: Why are you calling him Peg? Is that not Drift?

Never even thought to ask here. Would anyone be interested in a brand new copy of Microsoft Office Professional 2010 for $150 below retail? -
No. It's here. =P

Robert-Man? Check. Scarlett-Widow? Check. Sam-Fury? Check. Chris-Thor? Check. Chris-America? Check. ....Jeremy-Hawkeye?....All right... .................Ed-Hulk? No. This is too much. It's bad enough we have Renner playing Hawkeye. Not paying for another great actor to play the frigging Hulk. Get someone cheaper!

Use the hacked drivers to get the card working then use windows update to get it to the current/default. One of the best ways to do it. I put 7 on a P4 system with an OLD Asus motherboard running SiS drivers that were almost non existent. I had to download a custom made driver, connect to windows update then get the default driver 7 supplied. System runs better with 7 than it ever did with XP on it. Just a thought. -

What hardware are you running that runs Vista but won't run 7? That doesn't make any sense. -

Not at all. Geek Squads diagnostic software is actually really good. Do you know if he got the black tie protection or is it just under the manufacturers warranty? If he bought the extra warranty, they would probably just replace the whole thing. If not, they will likely charge him for the diagnostic and from there the prices skyrocket. He could attempt to deal with HP, but they are very, very, very, very shady and hard to deal with when it comes to getting something covered under the 1 year warranty. -
Still pissed about Ed Norton but everyone else looks great. I really like Jeremy Renner for Hawkeye. Also seems like they have a LOT of faith in how awesome Thor is going to be.

I work at Best Buy and we get the 6110y back ALL the time with the above described problem. We've pretty much narrowed it down to bad motherboards. How long ago did he buy it? -
I seriously doubt any SC2 expansions will be $50 or 60. WoW's expansions are huge and still only cost $40. As for not wanting to buy a second copy of the game to lan it up, well, it wasn't really legit to do that to begin with. As for Activision, /shrug. MW2 was buggy trash from launch. Infinity Ward is more to blame as far as I am concerned.

Get a Geek Squad calibration. Best $300 you'll spend on top of of the cost of the tv. -
Wonder why they'd do that instead of trying to auction it off somewhere.
