I definitely mourn the loss of Jean Robert Lap, he was a great character and would have made a great ally of Yang's later on. I liked how he was thinking the same thing as Yang after the destruction of the 4th fleet, but had a similarly pig-headed fleet commander. I thought his death in the movie was definitely handled better than in the series, which was very quick and abrupt without doing a whole lot to really establish the character and his history with Yang. Sometimes Yang seems a bit aloof, but that's part of his character, there are times when we see how he cares deeply for those under his command. Truly a reluctant warrior. I really liked Fahrenheit's reaction to Reinhard's plan, whereas the other older admirals were shocked, he had this look of "ah, I like this plan!"

The two things that people in the military value over everything is courage and competency. A commander has to demonstrate their ability to take charge of a situation and deliver a successful outcome and to take care of the people under your command. I think Yang is certainly "less than perfect" even by his own admission, but he is regarded as competent by subordinates, especially Dusty Attenborough, who was an underclassmen of his at the Academy. Reinhard is definitely presented as Golden Child perfect, but he earned his way up and all the stories in the Gaiden show that he demonstrated great skill in not only tactical areas, but also personnel. He knew how to get people to do what he needed them to do without simply falling back on his rank. He runs across a lot of people in the Gaiden prequels, and earns a lot of respect from them, so the ones who dismiss him as the "admiral under the skirt" are people who really don't know him. Kurt is the older one, Tonio is the younger one. Kurt has the fatalism of an experienced veteran, as well as the caustic sense of humor. The war has been going on for 150 years. Lots of people in history have spoken in religious terms to justify war, this is true in the War on Terror, and I'm not talking about just the Taliban and Al Qaeda. What I would have liked to have seen was a bunch of the FPA military guys with Yang to roll their eyes at Secretary Truniht's speech. It's propaganda and yes, it gets a whole lot worse. Yes, I will post the links later on.

It's definitely the core foundation of the Imperial side of the show. Actually, the Tiamat starzone is pretty significant as it is the closest star system to Iserlohn I love the moral quandary of "corrupt democracy vs. benevolent dictatorship" and throughout the series, I find myself constantly asking which I would prefer.

The battle in the second half of the film is the 4th Battle of Tiamat. I love Kircheis' character, especially when he finally goes on his own, away from Reinhard, but he did seem a little too "perfect", the Gaiden had a little too much "Reinhart-o-sama" The bar fight scene was a good one; unit camaraderie is a big deal and I like how they emphasized this with Reinhard, especially in the "Those Who Mutiny" story arc in the Gaiden side stories, which is about Reinhard's first assignment aboard an Imperial Warship. I can't remember whether or not we see Lieutenant (JG) Louis Helm or Ensign Whin Vanderberg later in the series. Watching this made "Bolero" my favorite classical music piece. I first remembered hearing it used in the , but this was even more incredible. A giant ballet of starships moving in tactical formation... perfect music.A big favorite of mine is the for the arrival of the Reinhard fleet at Iserlohn. That was bold and triumphant!

And this was the guy who Scott Bernard and everyone else thought was this great, legendary war hero? To even think of starting off his arc like that is an insult to the character. What a waste.

This is the biggest problem I had with The Sentinels as it was made is that it was so limited and confined. It was a poor sequel to the original Robotech filled with a lot of half-baked ideas and simplistic character stereotypes; i.e. the fiendish General Edwards and the indecisive Rick Hunter (seriously, did we really need to see you wait 10 years to marry Lisa Hayes?) The Sentinels could have been a great show in its own right, a thing that would allow Robotech to stand on its own, had they tried to do a new story. Personally, I would have done a story where new characters (i.e. Jack Baker, Karen Penn) took center stage, with the old Robotech characters being in important, but supporting roles, like the original Gundam characters were in Zeta Gundam. I do respect the work of the Waltrip Brothers and Jack McKinney, even if I don't agree with where they took the story. I think to try to wrap up The Sentinels story in a 5-issue comic was just SHAMEFUL.

Fire away, Noyhauser! I think it was a great introduction to the story, I wonder if Alexander the Great was just as confident when he was 20? Would have liked to have seen more about how Reinhard assembled his Admiralty. Loved Attenborough's "clumsiness" on the Patoroklos, that's certainly my favorite FPA moment. My favorite Imperial moment is Muckenberger and Flegel's reaction to Reinhard's "maneuver".

After reviewing the Gaiden prequel side stories, I agree with starting with the main series as the side stories are not essential to the story and 52 episodes (plus the Golden Wings OVA) could take a while and delay the main story we all want to get to. I will be referring to the Gaiden when appropriate as they are interesting to watch in their own right. (Perhaps in a "Would you like to know more?" fashion) I don't see a problem watching "Overture..." after "My Conquest..." because the first half of overture (before the admirals arrive aboard the Brunhilde) is all new stuff. The rest of the movie is the first two episodes reanimated and re-presented, the end of the movie presents scenes that are featured in the first bunch of episodes, but I think those are more "previews" of what people are going to see later in the series.

Absolutely, would love to hear from all LOGH veterans, just be sure to watch the spoilers. Let's not spoil it for those who haven't been able to experience it. Yeah, I always thought the battle axes were a bit over the top, not to mention the liberal amount of blood. This is a VERY violent series, I think they were trying to show the horrors of war and not try to sugarcoat it. Yes, Walter von Schenkopp is one bad mother...

There are 162 half hour episodes in total (110 in the main series and 52 in the prequel series), plus the three movies. I will post the links to the episode on YouTube around midnight each day. Then we discuss the show as we watch it. What does everyone want to do? Monday-Friday? or Everyday? I know a number of us have seen it, so let's be sure to avoid talk of spoilers. I personally have seen the entire series, but only half of the series was subtitled when I watched it back in 2000-01. Yes, I was so addicted, I watched the rest of the series without subs just to see what happened! Noyhauser, I believe we should start with the "Gaiden" prequel side stories, as they give a lot of character background to Yang Wen Li and Reinhard von Lohengramm (von Musel) It shows how each of them met the other "heroes" that are with both characters in the main series. This is the series in CHRONOLOGICAL order. * Spiral Labyrinth (14 episodes) * Valley of White Silver (4 episodes) * Those Who Revolt / Mutineer (4 episodes) * Those Who Duel / Duelist (4 episodes) * Golden Wings (OVA Movie) * Those Who Recapture / Survivors (4 episodes) * Morning's Dream, Night's Song (4 episodes) * A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights (12 episodes) * The Third Battle of Tiamat (2 episodes) * My Conquest is the Sea of Stars (OVA Movie) * Disgrace (4 episodes) * Overture to a New War (OVA Movie) * Main OVA Series 1 (26 episodes) * Main OVA Series 2 (28 episodes) * Main OVA Series 3 (32 episodes) * Main OVA Series 4 (24 episodes)

Yes, unless there is another version that has all the episodes translated. It doesn't look like it has the redone animation that they did later on in the series. The chinese DVDs have the newer animation, but the translations are atrocious.

Did they go to CDC and meet Jenner in the comic? If they did, how was it different? One thing that bugged me was how close they were to the building when it exploded, they should have been miles and miles away. No way could they have been that close and survived.

I'm planning to start watching LEGEND OF THE GALACTIC HEROES, the complete saga, one episode per day (Starting January 1st) and wanted to invite anyone to join along in the discussion and understanding of this great anime series. All the episodes have been subtitled by Central Anime and uploaded to YouTube. There are a total of 110 episodes in the main series, 3 OVA movies and 52 episodes in the "Gaiden" prequel/side stories. If anyone has not watched it, it is one of the greatest series in the history of not just anime, but science fiction and drama. To say it is EPIC is an understatement. If you have seen it, you know what I am talking about, if you haven't seen it, then you are missing out. I will post the links up for the day's episode every day. I'd like to introduce this series to anyone who has not seen it. Any LOGH fans out there?

The character stuff was really important to establish, in my mind. But maybe it's my appreciation for Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which some would say is very talky, coming through. In the first episode of anything, you have to deal with exposition, so that's always a challenge. I tried to keep it to a minimum. I thought repeating elements of the last two episodes of Robotech was very repetitive and unnecessary. I think it ended up confusing things for new audiences. One of the many arguments that I did not win. Don't know what Tommy's obsession with the name "Maia" was, but he just had to have her name as Maia. I think Angelo and Aurora would have had an interesting relationship. In my mind, the SDF-9 was the "Archangel" not Ark Angel, which I think is a dumb name (BTW, I always thought it should be VARITECH, not VERITECH too) The SDF-9 would have looked mean, fast and sleek, a quick strike attack warship, definitely not the big blocky thing we saw in RTSC.
-
Terry, I get asked this question a lot. "What would you have done?" Here is how I would have done a follow up to the original Robotech. Though my first preference would be to do The Sentinels. I didn't care much for the Marcus character, because his whole character is one-dimensional (wanting to avenge his sister), I tried to humanize him a bit in my attempt. Back in late 2001, right after 9/11, on my own and without being asked, I wrote a script that I felt would be true to Robotech and be a springboard for telling the story of the search for Rick Hunter. This was before anyone else had written a script. ROBOTECH : Shadow Force by Thomas J. Bateman None of this script was used in RTSC, as you will notice that this is VERY different from anything resembling RTSC. Give it a read and let me know what you think. Merry Christmas, RT fans.
-
The problems with RT are unrelated to HG's other business, which have always been just fine. Robotech's problems rest at the feet of those most directly involved in it.
-
The answer to all these questions is "Yes." It's important to differentiate HG from Team Yune: Tommy, Steve and Kevin. The day to day stuff on rt.com is pretty much left up to those three. The other parts of HG are concerned with more important things. There's a conscious effort on the part of Team Yune to suppress dissent and censor any critical opinion or to mock them and publicly "correct" them, which Kevin likes to do.
-
I would really disagree with this statement. I don't think the average RT fan is any more or less discerning or selective than any Macross fan about the merchandise they purchase, they just lack some of the options that Macross fans do. I think RT fans, certainly the ones I know, would really draw the line at toilet paper. RT fans unhappy with merchandise simply lose interest and move on to other things. There is a limit to a brand name's value when it is not followed by a consistent stream of quality product. For example, the Star Wars Prequels sold a ton of merchandise, but how much more millions of dollars of merchandise do you think they would have sold had the Prequels actually been "good"? Quality matters.
-
terry, I think the likelihood that of that happening is pretty slim, but in Hollywood, anything is possible, I guess. Stranger things have happened. It would certainly be a very interesting conversation. If HG is interested in making REAL money off of Robotech, instead of the nickel and dime revenues I suspect they are getting now, I would certainly be willing to talk with them about making a real future for Robotech. Tommy Yune and his mismanagement, his decisions, have cost Harmony Gold MILLIONS... yes, you read that right, MILLIONS of dollars, and many, many missed opportunities. I guess it's like a girl staying with a bum boyfriend. Sometimes, you just get used to the relationship and don't think there's an alternative, so it's easier to just stay in the relationship than to try something different. Until HG decides to reassess its relationship with Tommy, anything we talk about here is moot. Every day he is there, another opportunity is missed, and another day is lost ...forever. At this point, they might as well be burning the money in the fireplace than pay him. That's just my opinion. Oh, and call me Tom p.s. Richard, Alan Letz left about two years before I did. His departure had nothing to do with mine. Oh, RTSC sold very well, from what I understand, though I left HG only a few months after it was released on DVD, so I was not privy to info from them. A few years later, I found out that the sales figures were not bad at all, certainly enough to warrant a sequel, in my opinion.
