Thanks, wm, that's a great explanation. Max style is the method perfected by Hobby Japan lead Gundam modeller Max Watanabe, and often emulated by other modellers. I've had no luck trying to do it, though. For example, imagine he's painting a white part. He'll first paint the whole part black. He will then paint it grey, so the black remains just around the edges. He'll then paint white in the middle of the grey, so it ends up with a gradient between the white and black. This is a simplified example, he'll sometimes use three of four shades of grey on a part. For another color, say, red, he'll start with black, then a maroon, than a red. Or, if he does black, he'll start white and than grey, than black in the center. Needless to say, because this form of shading is sort of working backwards, it's not easy to accomplish with good results. In addition, it yeilds cool looking, but very unrealistic, results. I'll see if I can find some good pics of the technique.

Ooh! I'd love one of those. I just have the Eclipse HP-BCS, the siphon feeder. I think I may get one of those iwata looking Japanese ones for a second brush, as they are just as high quality as Iwata. In fact, the same factory makes the Iwatas and the other ones, they just make a limited number for iwata and than produce their own ones for additional profit. I've been wanting a side feeder, the siphon is trouble. (especially because it spills everywhere unless I use a jar adaptor)

I'm pretty sure that's the original one from Model Graphix.

I used to wear glasses Vostok 7 Bah! I wear glasses, and my real name is Max!

A banpresto Customisation idea: Stampede valk.

I dunno. For me, smaller stuff is harder. All those tiny details and things are not easy. -
Hellsing on Starz! Encore Action Channel
Commander McBride replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Man, Adelphia sucks.... No International Channel, no Starz, no Tech-TV, no Anime Network. You'd think there would be something good for 66 bucks a month! -
I have a few putty questions myself... I picked up the Gundam Scratchbuild Manual yesterday, and I notice that they often use a brown colored polyester putty that comes in a can. Is there any american product like this? All I've been able to find is the tubed green Tamiya kind. Also, is there a good domestic brand of epoxy putty? I can only find the little Tamiya packages, in which you hardly get any putty at all.

Yeah, I too have pretty much abandoned gundam markers. I find the overall best panel line pens are Rotring Rapidograph technical pens, but they cost about 30 bucks a piece. I only have mine because I got them for my architecture classes, which promptly got their funding cut. So, I had these great fine tip pens, and I decided to try them. They really do make great lines.

Graham, green light for MAcross 0 toys info?
Commander McBride replied to Shin Densetsu Kai 7.0's topic in Toys
I think you're the only one that needs to calm down, but then again, I always think that I don't think Graham will be willing do the "Tune in on such-and-such date when I reveal X product" thing again after the way "pants wetting" thread went. Did we ever find out what that was all about? -
No. I'd rather have a VF-1J in a realistic High-Viz scheme. A high viz 1S CAG bird would be awesome, too.

Anime: as addictive as crack and twice as expensive! I feel the wallet pain, too. Especially 'cause, as well as my Macross addiction, I have a hardcore Gundam habit, too.

1/100 Bandai FRX-00 Mave step-by-step

Maybe the ones you're talking about are completely unusable ones for training loading crews. -
Did you use decal setting solution? If not, that would probably be the problem. If you redo it, you should use some, I use Microscale Micro-Set solution.

I've been trying to pull off the shading often seen around the edge of panels on models, but haven't had a lot of luck. I've heard about pre- and post- shading, but never have found a clear tutorial, especially one dealing with doing it on realistic aircraft models, instead of Max Watanabe style extreme shading. So, can one of our resident model gurus do a how-to when they do their next model? I'm sure many of the aspiring modellers on MW would appreciate it.

It looks great, especially considering the small size. I still can't pull off the panel shading myself, especially on something so small, so i'm quite impressed.

It looks pretty good to me. I'd been wondering what was with the cockpit, before you explaned. Is this all drawn with a mouse, or did you use a tablet?

Anybody Following Gundam Seed?

I had trouble getting episodes past 25, so I kinda stopped there. I really need to get back to downloading. -
SaiKano (She, The Ultimate Weapon)
Commander McBride replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I see. I was looking for SaiKano, not Saishuuheiki Kanojo. -
You know, if there would be one change to the 1/60 line, I'd like the legs to be changed to plastic, or at least, partly plastic. My 1/60s all have legs that are discolored, bent where they attach, and so loose in all the joints thet the valk can hardly stand.

I'm not having any trouble seeing them.... A7 really did do great with those panel lines, though. I saw the 1S in person at the con, and it looks awesome.

Speaking of cases, does anyone have any recommendations for an inexpensive glass display case? I'm going to try Ikea this weekend, but I couldn't find any on their website, although I know they've had them in the past. (my wood and glass one came from there, but I need a relatively plain all-glass one.)

I prefer the first. The second one looks too pissed. The first one has better hair, too. And, plus, the SD element is great!

I agree, if you are really on a budget, a model H is a great airbrush. My dad has one, and it's what I learned to airbrush with. And, BTW, aviod the testors "Aztek" brushes. Every pro studio modeller and graphic artist i've talked to has strongly reccommended against them. The plastic construction really isn't up to par.

Believe it or not, they actually do make RX-78 shoes shaped like Gundam's feet! I belive there are also Zaku shoes, but i've only seen confirmation of the gundam ones.
-
Where did they originally come from, though? I've been seeing them on the boards for a while, and seen a few in person, but does anyone know when/why they were made?
