It's not just Political Correctness--it's just standard politics in the US these days. Take what your political opponent has said, remove all context (in fact substitute your own if necessary) and publicize it in the worst light possible. Both major political parties play the game. (Hopefully we won't veer back into the politics, which almost killed this thread at its inception.)

Nope. Page was last modified October 13. I hadn't seen it before, though. I like the bullet holes on the victim Valkyrie.

EA: aimstrike arrived yesterday, so I played around with it a bit before going back to the Macross PS2 game (where I'm trying to get all the S-ranks and cards). A few notes: It does work with the VR headset, and the manual also has pictures of a PS2 throttle/stick combo--I think it's the Hori Flightstick. (The same company also makes an advanced model called the Flightstick 2.) Overall, based on my experience with flight simulators (mainly Hornet on the Mac, plus a little of Falcon 3 and some of the original Falcon way back when), the aircraft move quite realistically, which is to say they're very unresponsive compared to something like SDF Macross, or Battlecry. (I have a copy of Ace Combat 4, but I haven't played it yet.) The scenery also looks good, occasionally very good, and the planes sometimes look completely real in the replays, due partly to some shakiness built into some of the replay views, which simulates the shakiness of telephoto lenses tracking a moving object. Simmish elements include limited fuel and weaponry (including the gun ammo). The airbrake works, but apparentely you can't put down the flaps. Rudders, hstabs, and airbrake all move; I'm guessing that the ailerons/spoilers do, too, but I couldn't see them. Landing gear and hook (for the Super Hornet) are also animated. The afterburner flame is visible as you turn the throttle up and I think the nozzles even move. Another nice touch is the fact that the controller shakes as you transit Mach 1. Oh, and blackout/redout are simulated. I tried a little bit of A-A practice and found that multiple modes are represented in the HUD/radar. (The displays are different from plane to plane.) But there isn't nearly the level of detail and control as in Hornet, let alone Falcon 3. For example, your search radar is always off when you have the Sidewinder selected; if you want to search, you have to switch to AMRAAM mode (even if you don't have any AMRAAMs left). Another simplification is that pressing one button releases both chaff and flare, whereas in Hornet they're separate buttons (which you end up hitting simultaneously anyway when you're avoiding a missile). Not sure if decoys are limited. Also noted from the Walkthrough over at ign, some of the planes have AIM-9X and helmet mounted sights, and you do have wingmen to whom you can give orders. Overall, I think I'm going to enjoy this one, but I doubt I'll buy a joystick for it. A joystick makes a huge difference for computer flight sims due to the inadequacy of mouse/keyboard, and a high end joystick with HOTAS adds nearly as much again over a barebones stick. But the PS2 controller seems adequate given the simplified controls of this game.

I doubt you could get much better resolution than that larger picture. The photos in Macross Hobby Handbook aren't all that big to begin with. I don't particularly like this one. It's just impractical to carry a missile like that around on a slow-moving destroid. Might as well stick it on an all-terrain crawler or a fixed launchpad. I'm positive that Egan Loo didn't add stuff to the Compendium based solely on unofficial customs by modellers. He's always been painstakingly careful to only include official information, and he's corrrected others for passing off stuff from the Hobby Handbook as canon.

Well, we haven't seen the Garland transformed yet, have we? But even if they don't have the mockup, the fact that one was used originally is a good indication that the transformation doesn't use much "anime magic". So making it work in physical form again should be within Yamato's powers.

I think you must be right, Pat. The katakana transliteration (from the original Zentradi ) is デカルチャ apparently--based on doing a google.co.jp search. It shows up a lot in the phrase "ヤック! デカルチャ!" (Yakku! Dekarucha!). I notice that Kamjin (and Millia?) say it in the PS2 Macross game when you beat them.

Opus must have been reminded by the word "crucifixion"... Douglas was also in Paths of Glory, which featured him blowing a whistle and waving a revolver as he led men to certain death on the Western Front in World War I. And The Vikings, where he does a lot of swinging on ropes, kissing girls, and sword fighting with Tony Curtis and Ernest Borgnine. (Borgnine also starred with Hackman in the Poseidon Adventure, and Holdman in The Wild Bunch, so maybe his presence is a sign of badassness going on, even if he himself is a little too rotund and comical to be on the list himself.)

Jack Palance. Now that guy is scary. The only part I liked in the otherwise badly dated Shane. Edit: Hmmm. What about Jimmy Caan? Oh, yeah--William Holden.
-
And if you're not lucky, he'll eat your balls.

Here are some translations, probably mostly based on each other, but there might be more than one version in the lot: http://unspacy.msyte.com/fanfic/skullone/U...e_fanworks.html http://www.pathea.com/anime/1980/macross/s..._english_ld.txt http://www.geocities.com/wyrath/articles/love.htm http://mangatoanime.com/vbulletin/showthre...11956#post11956

Yeah, I thought of him, too. Not sure about his other roles (dancing, singing King of Siam? Petulant, ineffectual Pharaoh?) but he was one of the magnificent seven, and more importantly, he's terrifying in West World. I wouldn't put him on the list unless he's done more tough roles that I haven't seen. But his gunslinger character was surely an influence on the Terminator, or at least a precursor.

Update: I happened to have a couple of HCM 1S's still sitting in my watched auctions over on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT One went for 127.50, the other for 89.99. I recognize the sellers' id's, in fact one is blackaces from MW, who I believe is based in Singapore; the other is based somewhere else in the Far East. So the cost of shipping may have affected the final price, along with condition (see the auction listings for details).

And if you have De Niro--whom I agree is an amazing tough guy and a master thespian, a rare combination, indeed--maybe you should have Duvall, and give the little guy some respect: Joe Pesci. A1, have you seen Papillon? And for Heston--Planet of the Apes, The Warlord, The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur. Also, if you've seen South Park, you know that JC is an action hero.
-
If you include Vin Diesel, you need to add The Rock. And if you have Carl Weathers, you also need Jesse Ventura.
-
I've you have Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson on the list, you also need James Coburn. And personally, I'd put Lee Van Cleef on the list, too, even though he didn't have a lot of big parts. Edit: Oh, yeah, what about Robert Shaw? Edit (2): And then there's a fellow by the name of John Wayne.

The improvements are looking good. I still don't think I'll buy this one at retail due to the transformation system, but I'm hopeful that more sales will encourage Yamato to make a bigger one with a more accurate (perfect or semi-perfect) transformation. Or if a cheap 1/100 VF-0 pops up in the secondary market before then, I'll probably grab it.

If it's the phrase I'm thinking of, it's in a lot of anime. Transliterated, it's "masaka". In hiragana it's まさか Not sure how to input the kanji, but it's below. See http://dict.regex.info/cgi-bin/j-e/fg=r/in...ZZY=on&T=masaka and http://www.animelab.com/anime.manga/dictionary/ma/3560/40

Let's not forget Charlton Heston.

Welcome to Macross World, J_Spec! In addition to what others have suggested, I'd add that the HCM's do come up on eBay from time to time, so you might do a search for completed auctions. Yahoo Japan might also be a good place to look, if you can figure it out. However, I think that YJ prices are often lower than eBay prices, probably because of greater supply, limited market (relatively few non-Japanese buyers), and greater incidental fees that overseas buyers often have to pay.
-
Nope, I haven't tried to get the VR headset since I think the retail price is/was over $100 and I saw some comments that it didn't work very well. Also, I'm not sure if it works with EA: aimstrike or only with the original Energy Airforce.

Scientists vote 'Blade Runner' best sci-fi film.
ewilen replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I don't want to get between Exo and Keith, but--ugh--Cinema Paradiso a great foreign movie? If you haven't seen it, I suggest you check out Ran, or Delicatessen, or Diva, or...well, pretty much anything. Sorry, I know you've probably seen a bunch of foreign films but I detested that one so much, I can't let the name pass the boards without adding a personal raspberry. Pthththth! -
Delayed addition to this thread--I haven't played either of the following, but they might be worth a look... Aero Elite (I understand it's at the simish end of the spectrum) Energy Airforce: aimstrike (import only) Any comments on these? I've seen some talk about the Aero series elsewhere on the forums, and I'm expecting the latter in the mail soon.

Yeah, I sort of take back what I said about the cockpit as it's so hard to tell. The engines look close. I'm guessing they meant to do an Avenger II and just goofed on the tail. Maybe someone who gets the recasts can fix that...and then cast it.
-
The cockpit isn't right, and while the Avenger II has a T tail, the plastic one has a normal tail. Compare... The little plastic guy isn't quite an Intruder either (pointier nose, and engines more on the sides) but it's closer. It's almost a cross with a Skyhawk: (Sorry about the repeated edits; I'm trying to compress the pics to keep the size down.)
-
I'd like to know, too. It looks kind of like a real-world A-6 Intruder. Closest thing in Macross is the Avenger II, but the tail is wrong.
