1. Yeah compared to the line art, the only real difference is in the detail on the "saddle bags" on her hips. There seems to be more detail in the picture than on the sculpture. Everything else is amazingly accurate...
2. For those looking for region free copies of DYRL Perfect editon. Go here: They appear to have 4 copies left: http://cgi.ebay.com/Macross-Movie-Do-You-R...7QQcmdZViewItem
3. I suspect there is more of an issue with the record company's permission/license to allow a release of English transliteration of the songs, rather than anything else. Mari is an accomplished bi-lingual song writer who understands the songs as well as the composer would, so she's qualified to do the lyrics as well as sing them. I suspect ADV didn't consider how much the fans would have wanted the songs in English (Duh!! You get the singer but not the songs... ). Especially considering they have never made an attempt to transliterate music from any of the other shows they've dubbed over the years. Personally if they were smart, they'd contract Mari to do just that for them. It would give them a resource that was unavailable to them before as well as a regular income for her and the flexibility to continue to tour.
4. You and me both brother... I really wonder if "Macross 3D" proposal was going to be precisely that, but I haven't seen much more on the subject, thus far...
5. I disagree. It is still "double dipping", however what made it unique is that they were up front about it from the beginning and had enough respect for the fans to provide unique content for both disc sets, unlike most Hollywood studios. The method of delivery and business ethics may be different, but the fact remains that it is still "double dipping" in the strictest sense of the term. What LOTR did was show studios that they could "milk" the fanbase for two home video versions of the same movie, which has become common practice now. Some will buy both sets of the same release, while some will only buy one or the other. Personally I don't have a problem with what New Line did. They could do it and so more power to them. Why not get all you can from a property, since the proceeds will go to fund other projects, that may never see the light of day at a bigger studio, that deserve to be made. Those who feel cheated are ones who'd be cheated by lesser things anyway, IMO. It's all about choice. I for one never expected a Macross dub, but now that it's in the works, fine! I know the proceeds will go into the new Robowreck series and that is fine, it's their money to do with as they please. So long as they are too distracted to attempt to further supress Macross in North America, I'm cool with it.
6. The brand confusion is as prevalent as ever. People still believe Macross is "japanese Robotech" and that Southern Cross and MOSPEADA are "seasons 2 and 3 of Macross." I don't dispute that, what I meant was that the ignorant masses "believe" RT came first and thus the RT brand name is not in jeopardy (as far as HG is concerned)... Well, yeah. That doesn't mean we can't point out their shameless abuse of the fans. We're preaching the same message, just from different points of view, man. The reality is that all studios, including HG double dip, because THEY CAN... LOTR is a perfect example. They re-sold each film of the trilogy, twice, because the fans would buy it. It may not be ethical, but it's ballsy business practices that work. I found the Remastered audio to be rather poor and not well engineered. Now it may have been my audio receiver at the time, but I really wasn't impressed. Hey I agree, I'm only pointing out their motives, not justifying them.
7. Actually the 1984 film should not be confused with the 2030 film referred to in the Macross universe. Kawamori admits there are two... The 1984 film is correctly described as the visual canon of the Macross story (how the piece fits into the continuity of the whole story is a bit dodgy, since Kawamori won't give a difinitive answer on the subject). The one described in Mac 7 is another production within the Macross universe that came out around 2030 which is responsible for inspiring Basra Nikkei to get into music (according to the Macross Compendium).
8. Well let's keep in mind that Megaroad 1 may simply be an SDF1 chassis with super structure added on to it. The SDF 2 was approximately 70 % finished before Global ordered it converted to a colony vessel. The actual Megaroad class colony ship has never been filmed...
9. Try 61 episodes you dumbsh!t. Macross (36) + Mospeada (25). And by the way, Southern Cross was not an abortion...... 343085 Oooh, name calling on the internet...I think I might cry... Read my post and you'll understand where the 70 comes from... Southern Cross was "CANCELLED" in Japan! Anime cancellations at the time, were simply notifications that the studio had X many episodes to wrap up the show, before it would no longer be aired. It was meant to run longer than it did... It was a weak assed show to begin with and made even worse after inclusion into RT!
10. Well brother your first mistake was "believing" them! HG has to raise moolah to pay for it's new series. With Macross a cash cow project and RT an American house hold name, the risk of "brand" confusion is essentially gone, thanks to less than tasteful business practices over the years. Therefore, it is only to be expected that they'll milk the series for every cent they can! Fortunately it's ADV who's doing the dub and I have no doubt there are MANY Macross fans on that staff who want to see the show get the treatment is deserves. Hence the "A" list ADV voice actors assigned to the project. The only topper would be for Mari to be contracted to "transliterate" the lyrics to Minmay's songs and sing them in the show (though that would require a separate deal between ADV and the record company who holds the music rights to the songs). As I said, I'll be buying it and setting it along side my Animeigo set.
11. But Minmay doesn't love Hikaru, at least not much more than a close friend. She realizes after Kaifun leaves that she is all alone and that she's sacrificed everything and everyone to make her dream of becoming a singing star, a reality. In the post war eps, she is "trying" to reciprocate Hikaru's feelings and develop a relationship between the two, but ultimately accepts the fact, during the final assualt on the SDF1, that her first love is her music an nothing else.
12. Ahh, OK, that does shed a bit more light on the 5th season...
13. Really? I'm an avid B5 fan and am not sure what you are referring to? Really? I would have never guessed! Now I want to find out for sure! These episodes were great showcases to show how the lives of the characters had changed. Particularly Minmay and Hikaru. Minmay now faced with the shallowness of her existence tries to rekindle the feelings Hikaru felt for her and ultimately finds that he is in love with another. I agree that Hikaru should have been written with a bit more maturity and self confidence (after all he appears to be the CAG by this point). I still feel the series finale should have been about individual confrontations to offset the big bang of the final battle of the war. the story elements would still be preserved, just rearranged to be more exciting.
14. I didn't say anything about variable glaugs, those were cool indeed, but not featured in SDF Macross...
15. Sorry IMO that was the only weak link in the Macross show were the Glaugs. They were ill conceived and not an effective weapon by any standards. I may not be the biggest fan of Mac 7, but even the Varuta's "modified" VF fighters were more of a threat to the humans than the glaugs...
16. As I understand things, it was planned as a 3-season show, they were forced to cut it to 2 to get on the air, and the success of the first season got them permission to do a third season. Of course, the show had already been rewritten for a 2-seaosn run, so they had to pad it out. Global Report and Phantasm were the obvious fillers in the "main" show, and then the final 9 episodes let them do some stuff they'd previously scrapped(Roy and Claudia's "courtship" and add a few new ideas in as well. 349817 Really? That's unusual for Japanese animated television of that era. Usually the shows only ran a season. Hence why there are so many MS Gundam series. It was prefered to do a sequel than to continue a show for a second season.
17. A more qualified expert can correct me, but I was under the impression that Macross was only commissioned to run 30 eps and it was extended by the studio and sponsors because if was such a huge hit. I could be totally wrong, but that is the mythos I've grown up with. I do agree that it would have been nice for the series finalle to be a more personal one. A confrontation between Mira and Lap Lamis, Misa and Minmay, Global and Kamjin and Hikaru and Kaifun.... The war ends with LDA but the personal conflict continues until FTT. If that were played out more it would have worked better, IMO.
18. Actually, since the VF-2SS is a space superiority fighter, the black paint scheme is the actualy low-vis version... Very COOL!
19. It is truly a marvel. If I had the skill, the only thing I'd dare change would be to give the Macross lettering a nice polished gold sheen to make it stand out... Truly amazing!!
20. OK, having never played either game, I was able to research a few things. The first figure is Milia and Max's daughter (can't recall her name off the top of my head) who appears in the "Macross 2036" game. The other two figures are characters from the "Macross: Eternal Love Song" game that appears to take place during or close to the same year. Anyone who has more detailed info is invited to chime in...
21. Actually, the reason why SF subjects are so rare on FSM is only because SF modellers don't submit step by step projects as much (if at all, lately) as the mainstream builders do. I've seen many articles on SF subjects as well as Gallery submissions over the years, but almost none lately. That is the main reason I am encouraging wmchen and the other talented modellers on these forums to submit their step by steps to FSM. The magazine promotes ALL genres of modelling, but if no one submits articles on SF subjects then none are published. It is for no other reason than that. For general tips and techniques it is an amazing magazine, essentially written by kit builders. They also have specialty publications for dioramas, aircraft, cars, space craft, etc.....
22. What are you proposing as the conversion kit, considering you can still get the Elint seeker kit? Any pictures?
23. The way to "flatten" a sticker is very very time consuming. Essentially you clear coat it several times, sand the sticker area down and clear coat again until the layers of clear coat eventually even out over the sticker.... It isn't impossible, just very time consuming...
