  1. Personally I believe it is mostly coincidence, considering SK was a junior member of the team and only wrote the outlines of the episodes as well as the storyboards. The details were filled in by the script writers, with input from the director. I seriously doubt Kawamori gave it THAT much thought as he was just starting out and was eager to prove himself in the industry, hence why he divorced himself from the franchise for a decade after DYRL and was only drawn back in by a deal do do his test pilot story as a Macross title.
  2. For the record. In EB51 the Macross Cannon is listed as being 4000M long thus the same length as the Nupetiet Vergnitzs class command cruiser. Therefore it is impossible for the "cannon" arms to be actual capital ships. Don't mean to resurrect an old thread, but I knew I saw the MC's length somewhere...
  3. That's cool. You will find around here that some will take issue with comments made for/against their favorite show particularly if you haven't taken the time to see it all. Just something to keep in mind.
  4. Considering how little of either you've seen I wonder exactly how you could compare them to Shakespear or a Oscar worthy movie? Have you finished either a Shakespear play or Oscar winning movie?? Stating you havent' seen something and then prceeding to slam it based on your lack of viewing of it just reduces your opinions and comments to that of dismissive commentary by someone who cannot debate the production as a whole. Around here, you will find that nearly everyone here will be able to wipe the floor with your opinions, based on your lack of knowlege of the shows' content alone. Sorry bud, but if you want to argue your position and be taken moderately seriously you have to endure the shows you don't care for just like the rest of us...
  5. If I recall all the VF-0's were very generic without any distinctive markings except for Focker's VF-0S and the two seat VF-0B. The same was the case with the SV-51's. Only the two ace's had any sort of paint scheme and special insignias.
  6. Actually there are several anime references in ST:TNG. Mostly as homages back to the anime shows that would flatter Star Trek with cameo bits. In the episode "The Icarus Factor" where Riker Sr. and Jr. battle each other in a ficticious Japanese game of "Anbo-jyutsu", there several of the katakana characters are actually the names "Lum", "Ataru", "Kei" and "Yuri". Both Urusei Yatsura & Dirty Pair (as well as others) often had cameo bits referencing TOS of Star Trek .
  7. How many Tanks, APCs and Helicopters operate in Space? Mac Zero has distracted most from the fact that by the time of Space War 1 mankind had built bases on both the Moon (Apollo) and Mars (Sara), not to mention how many satellite stations that may have existed that we are not aware of. That the AUN had already engaged Spacy in stellar combat resulting in the deaths of the personnel from Mars Base Sara as they were evacuating the facility. Reddsun1 put it best, that a very possible scenario is a Gundam-like enviroment in the solar system with both sides controlling different parts of the system with cold war skirmishes or even all out battles taking place in space itself, not necessarily on any terestrial body. If the AUN develop a spaceworthy SV series variable fighter, why would they bother trying to control Earth territories when they could control all of the Moon or Mars, et al? So the development of military hardware would be far from over so long as the the AUN Army (and it's political masters) existed to challenge the UNG & Spacy's territorial borders. Hence a new cold war.
  8. At the time it was SK's way of fleshing out the background a bit. Something SDFM didn't really have much time for. The Atlantis city was another plot device to provide greater background dialogue on the PC's relationship with humanity, right up there with Mac 7's temple. SK's penchant for trying to explain the PC's history has always seemed to be clumsily portayed in the Mac productions. He stated in an interview, post DYRL and pre-Mac Plus, that the actual story of Macross was somewhere between the series and the movie, which we now know from the chronology, meant the PC civil war fought by the Meltran and Zentran forces of the Zentreadi. Though without the author's notes, I can see how one would conclude there is a contradiction in the stories. The fans at the time did, hence Kawamori's enigmatic explanation.
  9. That might take decades for the "fear" to subside for that to happen.... A certain president managed to use fear to get two terms...
  10. Oh I thought you were asking what squadron he belonged to prior to joining the Skulls...
  11. Prolly not, since he was dead before the start of SW-1
  12. Actually I wished they used the Schneeblume as the "actual" VF-1 at the end of Mac Zero. The design aesthetic is a better match between the Zero and post DYRL series'.
  13. Actually the Meltran vs Zentran animosity is supposed to date back to the days of the PC civil war... DYRL just made it a modern conflict as opposed to an ancient one.
  14. YES!! The Schneeblume is a definite choice for a "New VF" it is one of my favorite modern SK designs. Thanks for the reminder Ignacio
  15. VF-11 pre-Macross Plus or VF-22 post Mac 7. Both are fighters that we have not really been seen at their best (consideing Mac 7 used the VF-11 as a CF fighter=sacrilege!!)
  16. Storywise, I prefer SDFM (even with the flat epilogue episodes), visually I prefer DYRL in just about every aspect. To the thought out handling of space based fighter launches to the ominous look of the Zentran. The aspects of the "Atlantis" like city, the heroic death of Roy, the knife fight in a phone booth battle between Max and Millia and other story pearls found in DYRL are very much appreciated, but the overall story is what I enjoyed in SDFM. The comedic elements of SDFM remind me of real life situations where someone always finds humor in the most dire of circumstances (explains why I like Joss Whedon's writing so much). DYRL was an excellent movie in that it was a tight story, fast paced that didn't let the audience get bored at all. So given a choice, I'd prefer SDFM, however I'd love to see the DYRL visuals plugged into SDFM to really bring it all together since all Macross shows post DYRL have taken their design elements from that movie and not the series.
  17. Well considering Macross is the poster child of retcon, I think a few need to relax.... The continuity has been "adjusted" for decades, so Mac Zero is simply par for the course, not some shocking new development as some might want us to believe. Personally I welcome it. It makes more sense to me than having all this OTEC floating around and it only being available to one side and only revealed on the day of the Macross launch. Essentially Mac Zero makes a more reasonable presumption that the technology would leak out and be used against the UNG, thus escalating an already tenuous world situation. I may not agree with some of the details in the "amendments" but in a general sense I like it from a story point of view.
  18. Maybe when twin 64 bit processors with 8 Gigs of Ram is the norm for all home based systems, but for now I'll take yours anyday... Just praying for the day you have a system capable of giving us hi res images of that work of art!
  19. Anyway.... If anyone is curious as to the discussion regarding the SA's status it is found in this thread (pretty compelling arguments from all over): http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?...4098&st=360
  20. Because the old was is Old and Broken down and they want some New Hotness... Besides it was pretty dated as well. I suspect there'll be a game for the PS3 and probably a new Song collection CD, neither requires a lot of advanced buzz to generate sales.
  21. We've discussed this before Keith and you didn't make your case then either... No point in bringing it up here because that will only hijack the thread and the same old arguments will be rehashed in someone else's thread.
  22. They'd probably have to win the legal rights to the story of SDFM in Japan before being able to persue the same internationally. With the rights firmly in hand they could reanimate the series and visually change whatever they wanted to make it distinct from the original. Then they could license it in the West and simply assist the licensee with any legal challenge HG would dare attempt. One way is to establish a "branch Office" in North America and then funnel the show through that channel to really f*ck with HG's claims on any part of the franchise.
  23. Uhh, yeah sure Keith whatever you say..... **Slowing backing away from the crazy person....** Well you'll probably find yourself alone on that one...
  24. Casting Mari was a great idea, but they waited till the last minute so the woman had no opportunity or was even advised to see a voice coach to help her with her accent. It essentially became a marketing ploy instead of a genuine attempt to use her talent (as Flying Monkey already pointed out). If they truly wished to utilize her fully they would have struck a deal with Victor to remaster the Minmay songs for the show, but that wasn't even done. I agree that the voice director was definitely inexperienced with foreign actors. ADV dropped the ball with respect to altering the pitch of Mari's voice to bring back her youthful tones. One of many many dropped balls by ADV. It is a shame that they paid the translator to do such a thorough job and then to essentially toss so much away because they "assumed" the audience wouldn't be able to follow the story without lame and retarded slang (isn't that was HG did too? You be the judge)... I had hoped they would have put as much care into the Macross dub as they had with Evangelion. Oh well I suspect there aren't any Macross fans on their staff like the Evangelion ones... There are only a few RT actors I'd like to see work on SDFM Macross the Roy Focker and Bretaii actors come to mind, both seemed best mached to their roles. The one thing the really pisses me off about the dub is that Max's voice is a baritone in the original not a wispy teenage voice. That was the thing that made Max so unique in SDFM was this deep voice coming out of this baby face...
