  1. I thought the X-9 fighters were scaled back as opposed to shut down. In VF-X2 some 10 years after the Sharon Apple incident we still see them around. As for the PD, I suspect the X-9 would be no match for Sivil and probably would only serve to accelerate the awakening process as opposed to the Spiritia Farm that Gilpenich was trying to build.
  2. If you get an FX version or even the Bandai R2 version and have a Dual Layer DVD burner, our very own Hurin has the files and instructions to hook you up with a very good subtitled version of the Perfect Edition of the DVD. here: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=22110
  3. I can understand Mac7 particularly if it was not filmed in 35mm, but Mac Plus was so the HD treatment would work on that title. You can't really upgrade a show to HD if it doesn't have enough or exceed the necessary resolution for HD transfers. It would only amplify any flaws in the film at worst or give you a very clear 720p picture of an existing show at best. That could just as easily be achieved through DVD-9 with less compression per episode as opposed to spending the money on processing a HD transfer.
  4. Yes that is correct, I introduced the car invasion aspect in my rebuttal Um, yes it was directed, I wrote it. However, I am finding that i am being judged by your own example and well that's where this tends to break down. If that was the purpose of the new analogy then it was not presented as such, which is unfortunate as it is a perceptive point. You entreated me to strip the "starving" part of the artist from my mind, as though it was a mistaken statement originally made by you. This was not the case. I was making a point about Basara being the "epitome of a starving artist" and you were rebutting it. Why would I abandon a point I was making? Well I guess the issue is, that I keep bringing you back to those original statements trying to assertain when he went from an artist who owed no one anything to a prophet???? You are not alone in that idea, however I agree with the fact that because Basara doesn't show any substantial growth he is boring as a character and it has been pointed out in other threads that he was less a character and more plot device for the series. In that we disagree. The Basara character was inspired by the legend of Minmay from SW1 and determined within himself to do what she did. He didn't know how he was going to do it, but he was hell bent to accomplish his goal, which is why he "demanded" to be heard rather than allowed his music to "infect" the enemy forces as was the case with Minmay. The whole Anima Spiritia aspect came afterward and it isn't revealed (if I recall correctly) if the AS ability is a naturally occuring thing or something that can be learned with enough dedicated training. I understand that is what you believe, but I don't share that notion at all. I feel no need to twist anyone's words, I react to what is written. I MUST focus on such mundane things with you to establish what was said by whom! Otherwise it becomes some muddled mess of "you saids" when neither of us have said anything of the sort. I'd love to debate the issues, so long as what is attributed to me is accurately recounted, otherwise I am forced to waste time establishing my positions over and over on the same topics. On the contrary. Ask Keith about the debates we've had. They got pretty complex and I made every attempt to match him point for point, which is not often easy. I can understand that, however without you right in front of me I am unable to go on anything but your words and the word choices you have made. I indeed do wish to know your opinions, but being prepared to defend those opinions is the basis to all debates. Ultimately all our opinions have holes, accepting that and the idea that others may not accept your position is all part of a debate as well. I harbor no hostility toward anyone here, has this been a bit frustrating for me, sure, but its just a debate, not a world ending event... So whatever this has become, it no longer resembles a debate, and thus I am done.... Therefore I will be the first to kick over this bucket....
  5. Maybe they opted to put the money into the new series rather than one that's already been released?
  6. Well Manga Ent. still holds the license, so if they so choose they could import the HD master, subtitle it and re-distribute it here. If they are not aware then we should make them aware, while they still hold the license for the title.
  7. You can use an agency service like "Shopping Mall Japan" to bid on auctions in Japan. As far as I know any legit copies of the FX version are rare and almost never sold on e-bay (all the ones who claim to sell them are either lying or clueless as to what a legit copy looks like) and the Bandai version isn't often sold in North America due to the region coding differences. On Yahoo Japan you can sometimes find used ones for 5000 - 6000 Yen range.
  8. SDFM not remastered would probably not benefit from the transfer, but DYRL would since 35mm film stock has a much higher resolution than any current HD transfer out now. However, if sales of the DVD were weak it is questionable whether it will get the treatment. Here it would, but Japan is a different market.
  9. Possibly. Then we also have to consider that at that time ALL the PD were awake and active, so one team would probably not be sufficient, however you do make a good case that there may well have not been hundreds of Anima Spiritia troops in the field. Then again nothing is mentioned as to how many were identified to have this ability but didn't serve either.
  10. That is an assumption on my part based on the size of the SA at the height of the PD power. If all were similarly mind controlled the only way to effectively win a battle would be to have many teams (possibly a hundred (s)) to cut a swath through the enemy forces. Granted it is only an assumption, but I find it difficult to believe that they'd only be able to find a team of 4 with this ability from the billions in the Republic at the time.
  11. No, just a bit of frustration. The issue was that my response was in direct response to a comment as written. A second analogy was introduced and presented as the premise to discount my previous comment. My post would have been different had your second analogy been used initially. That is where the frustration began. My friend I was the one who introduced the idea of the "starving artist", you were arguing against that point. Yes and my point was that you changed your position on that and wouldn't acknowledge it. Initially you held the position that he was an artist dedicated to the purity of his musical vision and answerable to now one, but himself, then he became a messiah or prophet. There were fantasy elements around Basara and the Anima Spiritia ability to be sure, but much of it was explained when they opened the PC archive. Basara was much less unigue than we were lead to believe. At one time there must have been hundreds of Anima Spiritia people deployed throughout the PC fleets. We disagree, that is perfectly fine. It is not the end of the world, it happens all the time....
  12. Well if the series is being released in "volumes" then one could conclude it may well be another OVA series.
  13. Read both posts again and you will (or maybe not) see that two different situations are described. That is as far as I'm going to go into the semantics of that paragraph. Again, read the post. There was no equating the actual singing with rape, but the forcing of it upon an unwilling person(s) by violent means (as in shooting a speaker pod into another spacecraft), which is what rape is ultimately, the forcable trespass of one person on to another against their will. Then you've just contradicted yourself by admiting you changed the analogy, where previously you claimed it was the same. You may wish to slow down and read the whole posts before. "Starving Artist" is a term for those who are so consumed with their "art" that they do nothing else and often "starve" due to lack of funds to purchase food. If financing is irrelevant to being and artist then explain to me about all these musical "artists" suing Napster back in the day, or painters who's set legal dogs on people for using their work without permission? Art is for the masses free of charge is it not? I won't even dignify the messianic fantastic stretches. He had no idea what spiritia was until they met the PD. He used music to reach people like Minmay did 30 years previously and believed that he could affect people the same way. Although his methods were far more intrusive than Minmay's. He did believe his music could reach people, but this whole liberation and messianic soapbox is largely without any support from the story itself. Roy saw Basara as a potential alternative to conventional warfare, similar to the Minmay effect. Not as some guru mystically sent by the universe. Based on what? Basara became inspired by the Minmay legend and determined to be able to do the same thing. That is not pre-determination, he was not aware that he possessed the unique quality of anima spiritia, only the determination and belief that he would do what Minmay did. He largely willed things to happen by sheer subbornness. That's not pre-determination, that's force of will and absolute faith in his beliefs. He could have just as easily have failed and nearly gotten himself killed had the writers not written him like some sort of super hero.
  14. That truly is stunning! It's too bad you couldn't render all the separate sections with a neutral background (or even the black background) and then let us photoshop this masterpiece together. Color is optional since we could color it in PS anyway... If successful we could do the same with different angles of view. So long as the POV is the same distance and the scale doesn't change any, it could work pretty well.
  15. Food for thought... On the contrary, I do agree that a cultural aspect is inherent in the show, as it is here. Often western references find their way into animated shows and prime time shows that many Japanese would be lost in. I find this often with a friend's Japanese girlfriend who often doesn't understand references that we take for granted. However, the show's target audience was not necessarily highschool seniors, college students or even adults, it was kids and even with the eastern mystical references it was still not as deep as many wish it to be. Well said. However I believe there was a love triangle for Mylene, as she was attracted to both, but as you said, she couldn't make up her mind either way... It was obvious with Gamlin, but Basara was always very guarded about his personal feelings throughtout the series and the only indication of his humanity was when he relentlessly tried to revive Sivil. There appeared to be an attraction there that we never saw again until he was interacting with Emilia in the M7 "movie".
  16. My comments are in direct response to your comment about picketing outside a military/government building. Now you are throwing in a totally different scenario to justify your position. Don't try to dismiss my point with a different example from what it addressed. If that was your point all along then you should have made it initially. He is a person with a unique ability identified by the PC as "Anima Spirita". Those with this ability enabled the PC to combat and ultimately imprison the PD, I don't recall anywhere where the PC called or considered their Anima Spiritia forces to be Messiahs in any way... This may be your interpretation of what he is, but in context with the story he is only one of two people recognized to possess this ability, Mylene is the other. Then where has his "pure music vision" you were talking about earlier now gone?? He was a starving artist for his music, I saw no job, or any means of income outside the gigs he performed. He lived in a "forgotten" slum of the colony ship where it was pretty evident most who lived there were likely squatters. What liberation? How would he know they'd encounter the PD? How would he know they'd encounter brainwashed Megaroad 13 colonists? Who was he liberating and from what? I think you are giving this character far more depth than was originally there. He was one of the last two known people possessing the Anima Spritia ability described by the PC. That is all. He stumbled upon the fact that it was effective against these unknown attackers. There was no predetermination or fore knowledge of his abilities very often associated with those of the Messianic persuation. He was simply being an arrogant prig, disrupting military defensive formations while bellowing at targets. He fancied himself the 2040's version of Minmay (who inspired him) and in the process endangered the defensive forces as well as the colony fleet. When his abilities inadvertently triggered the withdrawl of the enemy forces, neither he or the military could really understand why it happened. It just did. Damn fine points sir. I have little doubt some of the "spirit" of the character's motivations are likely lost in translation...
  17. Because too often "artists" are looking for publically funded hand outs for what they deem as art, that I wouldn't put in front of a rabid dog.... Crap is crap, don't expect me to pay for it indirectly, is my position on such things. If an artist can make a living with their "art" great, otherwise get a part-time job.... If said activists are shoving their signs into my car that is considered assault and / or tresspass and both are just as illegal as rape. I didn't invite their slogans or wish to hear/read them so shoving them in my face against my will no matter how dedicated they are or noble they believe is their cause, is still an attack on me and mine. OK, do you see what you wrote? Quote, "just because he forces the Varuata to listen to his music". If I forced myself into your car and proceeded to play music you hated or started doing whatever I wanted in the name of a "vision" or "cause" I personally believed in, would I be considered unselfish because I believed my efforts were "pure"? I don't believe I am shoehorning my position as much as you may be, my friend. On the contrary. The methods of his vision was no less violent in practice than the military's, the principle difference was the mortality rate. He didn't entreat any enemy to his music, but rather forced them to endure it. That isn't "touching" anyone, it's forcing your will upon another... Well history has proven that mankind can justify just about everything so long as "their results" are acheived. The ends do not always justify the means, which is one of my points. His altruism is not in question. But his methods are... They aren't peaceful, they are non-lethal, there is a difference. But does Basara leave "everything" behind? No, he manages to take a military owned aircraft with him everytime he leaves. He refuses to cooperate, yet doesn't leave, why? He is certainly free to leave and continue his vision on his own, but he doesn't and instead impedes others, why? OK, now I am loosing respect for this debate when messianic delusions are beginning to be bandied about. True enough, that's what debates are all about....
  18. Well essentially Basara was written like a super hero, immutable and ultimately with little growth. It made him too fantastic to be believed and often irritating to watch because everyone else around him grew and we learned about them, but he barely did - if at all. He has been described on these boards as boring or more of an unxplained "event" rather than a character.
  19. That is the current trend, ever since Mac Plus. Mac 7 most likely popularized it the most and Mac Zero took it into orbit, figuratively speaking.... Huh?
  20. Ahhh, the old "Is it art if it isn't accessible" argument... I have this argument with my brother the "fine arts" graduate all the time... If no one listens to the "music" (I've heard "artist's" vision of music and it was nothing short of caucafanous self inflated drivel!) then who is "touched" by it? If the singer must demand and audience to listen to their "music vision" and even force it upon them with speaker pods then exactly how does one "touch" another against their will? Isn't that called assault or rape? I agree with Valkyrie addict who stated they were largly an unknown, barely heard group until Basara started interfering in military operations. Thus the method of his vision is either flawed or convoluded. Then why did he want a band? Equally questionable is why did the band members stay with him with his attitude? I won't even bother mentioning the question about him getting a state of the art VF-19 Kai to play with... I have no issue with anyone taking that type of attitude, however don't "expect" or "demand" anyone to listen to you or go out of your way to involve others to do follow this self indulgent quest. Sure he is. He "expects" people and the Varuata to listen to him whether they want to or not and will force the Varuata if necessary. He expects the band to practice and take the music seriously. He doesn't care about those providing for him (the fans & the military) which makes the circumstances around his character rather fantastic in nature and without much thought to reality. I've seen plenty of kids do exactly that, so I stand by my statement. He was the opitome of the starving artist notion, except he was given an advanced variable fighter plane...
  21. If you sing a song and nobody listens is it still music? Is that why he demanded that everyone "Listen to my song!"? It wasn't a choice by the listener or by winning over an unwilling audience like Minmay, but a demand, with intrusive speaker devices to boot. Actually he did bust Mylene's chops on several occasions, just not over the same issues as she. She often ragged on him for being selfish, irresponsible, and rude (kind of ironic coming from her). Well nothing wrong except for an incredibly childish attitude. "If I don't get my way, I just won't play with you anymore..."*pout* There is no question about his commitment to his ideals, however one can be commited and still show a measure of consideration to those around them or particularly those they are affecting (fighter pilots anyone?) Is Basarh arrogant?: Well one definition states: "1. making claims or pretensions to superior importance or rights; overbearingly assuming; insolently proud: an arrogant public official. 2. characterized by or proceeding from arrogance: arrogant claims." He did display characteristics of an arrogant personality, some will justify and accept it, others will not.
  22. Well in my imagination the SW-XA1 Shneeblume is the "actual" Valkyrie and the SW-XA2 Scheegan is the "actual" VF-9 Crusader... Not that I don't like the original designs, but they really seem out of place compared to the designs of M-Zero and anything after Mac Plus.
  23. Well relying on "toys" for canon coloring is not the best choice IMO. The toy makers are governed by cost effectiveness when producing a toy and will often (particularly in the 80's) take liberties with color schemes in order to save on plastic pigment or paint, during production. The truly unfortunate thing is that the only consistent color scheme of the SDF-1 is the DYRL version...
  24. Isn't it , "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaac-uuuu-rooooooooooosssssss!"?
  25. Let me know what scans you need and I'll see what I can do...
