  1. Point of order sir, Birdman? I do not recall the Birdman being destroyed by nuclear fire, the contrary is true. What "well-established defenses" do you speak of? A Macross warship with four squads of VF-31's? A NUNS garrison that lasted maybe 5 minutes under the influence of the Wind Singer, which would have left whatever Chaos forces who were not affected as their only support. There is no evidence of ground weaponry outside of the landed Elysion. So exactly how do you fight a defensive war on a planetary scale with a handful of ships against a superior force? Defensive battles tend to use the environment for cover, exactly where is the "cover" on Ragna that cannot be affected by a planetary bombardment? If we mix your description of the purpose of Johnson's attack then you would be correct, but I do not believe Johnson was attacking the whole fleet, but its' largest asset. Now in a normal enemy fleet with free thinking commanders it would be a suicide move as they would react even before the senior commanders would give orders. The SV fleet does not have that advantage. Perhaps Johnson counted on this or perhaps not. I think your counter to my statement about bold commanders is more akin to defence of your position rather than acknowledgement of history. Though I am confident that with more information expected in Ep 13, much of this fog of war may well lift.
  2. Tactically speaking: Staying put with a limited force as your adversary is marshalling his forces is a suicide move. Detonating a nuclear warhead on a PC artifact, when there is a consistent history that such artifacts cannot be treated as conventional items is a suicide move. "Assuming" you will have enough time to effectively research anything that results from the aforementioned detonation before an enemy attack is a suicide move. Taking forces into any battle that may be susceptible to mind control is a suicide move. I believe you are mistaking a bold calculated tactical attack with a WOW character... If it would have worked as expected, the SV would have been taken by surprise and at the very least been damaged or if lucky enough, destroyed. Either way it would end the war or at least buying some time to execute the NUNS plan. A plan with all the unexpected risks associated with detonating a warhead against an ancient PC device of unclear purpose and ensuring the safety of the Ragna population in the area. Many a battle has been won by a bold, audacious action by a commander. It is only after the fact that commander would be deemed brilliant.
  3. I am seeing that it is easier to Arm Chair Warrior these episodes as a member of the audience. If one puts themselves in the limited position of either side, your perception changes. This is how writers have to write to give an honest portrayal of any character(s). I don't believe for a second that Johnson intended to take on the Windermere fleet. His intentions seemed more akin to a surgical strike in an attempt to take out the biggest enemy asset. It was a gamble that "appeared" to have gone very wrong, but it has yet to be revealed if this was a poor tactical choice or a baited trap to get him out of position.
  4. That's a very "stereotypical" thing to say TMBounty... As strong an argument Seto makes, I have to agree with Rbstr here, though the Major's motivations are not very clear at this point. Based on the intelligence available at the time, any tactical decision would have been a no win situation for Chaos and perhaps worse for a NUNS task force based on what we've learned about the strategically placed Windermeran foods. On that last point, the PC ruins water tables must be interacting with other foods all over the Galaxy to produce var outbreaks outside the cluster.
  5. I finally saw the subs and can comment a bit. The NUNS Major impressed me as rather amoral rather than some villain. He detonated the bomb without regard to the civilians and the island city for that matter (it was pretty damn close to the edge of the blast). When it became clear the docking station was meant for the SV and appeared to compensate for the damaged systems he realized the defense of the world was untenable and ordered the evacuation. An order a military commander would give in a region he didn't have any additional support for. Johnson saw the evacuation as a way to protect those under his charge, the civilian population from Ragna in the Island. The Chaos forces certainly appeared to lack the discipline and tactical sense a trained NUNS force would have. The two 31A's watching the Knights attack the Aether instead of pursuing was a clear example of that. I get the sense these may be talented pilots but not the cream of the crop ex-military the SMS attracted. That being said, Chaos is so out of their depth in this conflict and perhaps that is the point. The reason why Windermere with their two dimensional tactics have won so many battles is because they face a singularly purposed civilian task force of limited capability fighting an all out war with an enemy they hadn't expected, using what they thought was a naturally occurring virus as, in fact, a deliberate weapon. The same weapon that is turning allies into adversaries with increasing numbers. This is a backwater region apparently not worthy of the NUN's efforts outside of a token task force of SpecOps personnel to put a band aid on a situation and then only to make it worse due to flawed intelligence. It calls into question if there is a new cynical nature to what the NUN has become in 50 years since the Great Space War. Remember it was the SMS that came to the aid of Frontier, NOT the NUNS federal forces. The complaint about the lack of mecha combat in the atmosphere is amusing. No one has yet proposed the possibility that the WIndermere may be uncomforable with GERWALK or Battroid combat, either in the air or on the ground as we have yet to see them exploit that ability of their variable fighters. They are "flyers" like the birds they venerate, not mecha soldiers. They appear to be damn good flyers too. SK has clearly studied jet combat maneuvers and understands that things like scissor patterns and the like are necessary in atmospheric combat to maintain tactical advantage and preserve the aircraft's speed. It doesn't matter that a nuclear engine won't run out of fuel, it does matter if you slow down too much to give your adversary the tactical advantage over you. The Knights are formidable flyers and you can't give them that advantage and hope to survive long Messer seemed very attuned to this fact. Hayate is no match for Keith in the cockpit without his New Type connection to the Walkure (Keith was insensed that Hayate would dare fly his rival's fighter). Messer was Keith's equal and had he not been fighting the var at the time of his death, they would still be locked in a stalemate no doubt. It would be like Iceman dueling Iceman in Top Gun. I did like the respectful tone Hayate had when he launched in Messer's VF. It was clearly a nod to SDFM when Hikaru was assigned Roy's VF-1S. Though at this point we don't know if it will become his permanent ride, but I suspect it will, as replacement fighters will be hard to come by right now. Mirage is taking her leadership responsibilities to heart though I have to agree that their squad commander was pretty impotent during the battle. However, that could be explained if he was taking command of the Alpha, Beta and Gamma squads and leaving Mirage to lead Delta. The implication I am getting is that she is so stiff and pre-occupied with her legacy that she won't loosen up enough to let her natural abilities come out despite Hayate's constant encouragement. The water animation was either epic or partly poached from live action footage and spliced nearly seemlessly into the cg. Either way, WELL DONE!
  6. Um, I like the VF-171 over the VF-17, but it IS a Cannon Fodder Valk. What else were you expecting??
  7. It is "real Macross" just like all the other productions. It is in an alternate time line. Even the "Official Continuity" isn't carved in granite as per the show's creator. If something doesn't fit from what came before, then it becomes "alternate reality" or takes on mantle of "Hey it's just a dramatic representation of actual historical events..." I like his position, but it makes canonheads nuts! Clearly. So much so, that I am in doubt you have ever seen it....
  8. If the calibre of the projectile is large enough, a high rate of fire is rather moot as the muzzle velocity from a true railgun would be 3 km/s or more. If the kinetic energy of being impacted by a bullet moving that fast didn't do critical damage then a second bullet following a millisecond after would.
  9. I'm sure Hasegawa, another member of the modellers consortium, pressured for a VF-1 as well. They've already announced the release of the VF-1X kit with an all new EX Gear cockpit tub.
  10. With rail guns utilizing the high power output of the engines to generate the magnetic propellant, it answers a few questions. Your projectiles no longer require propellant and thus can be the same size shell without the added dimension of a casing, equalling more storable rounds. The need for them to be incorporated into the airframe of the Valk also becomes necessary. However where the power is transferred to the DEW Gunpod is a new question? Through a hand port? The air frame is the same, the only principal visible difference seems to be the wings and the sensor package in front of the cockpits.
  11. There is no doubt in my mind that other "Galaxy" like fleets are out there, but they would be relatively few compared to the public missions. The adoption of a new VF is likely based upon need and economics. LAI and the like do not license their designs for free and then the resources are needed to build the units themselves. Cheap CF fighters are always needed so an economy fighter for general purpose defense will always be purchased first and it is likely any Spec Ops squads would be equipped with the most advanced fighters the fleet or colony can afford in limited quantities. The other more expensive and time consuming alternative is to go outside the NUN Alliance and develop your own fighter like the Windermerians did with their SV series (though we still don't know what they designate their fighters as).
  12. Well it is capable of generating a tactile fold fault shield. Whether that is connected to the Wind Song or not is not exactly clear. Either way, it is a remarkable defensive feature never before seen in a Macross production. Even the PD were incapable of such a defence.
  13. Glad BV finally got the message Locks in my purchases of all 9 disc releases However an unblocked Youtube channel will reach casual western fans who won't know to buy the Blurays like we will. it's good business. Considering all Macross productions may or may not be related to each other, MII has an equal place in the "official continuity" since there really isn't one....
  14. Doesn't everyone know this? One uses standard fold drives where as the SV uses SD fold drives. I'd expect the initiators create different event horizons and it gives a high LCF... I would look for much more polished texture maps on some models though. They would have access to Tenjin's skins from Wings of Goodbye, so some cap ships in hero shots would have major LCF with little investment from this production.
  15. I don't know if he is sore about it, but "officially" he has stated he has never seen it. I am doubtful about that, but that is my opinion.
  16. I understand the frustration. I felt exactly the same about Basara in M7. However, I am inclined to believe Gramia was baiting Johnson to come after him and leave his planetary base. Gramia may not have been the best fleet tactics student, but he does have advisors who may well be better at it than he. His change in tactics is illustrated by the fact he didn't stay and face Johnson as a chivalrous knight normally would. This is a surprise to Johnson, I'm sure. As for the hijacked fleets, how else would a king who has lived past his life expectancy build up a sufficiently sized force to take over a star cluster? It would take a few lifetimes to build up the necessary ships on a planet isolated from the NUN alliance. That requires a multi-generational ideology and commitment that appears to only rest with the current royal family consisting primarily of Gramia and Keith.
  17. It is possible that the NUNS base that was destroyed sat on a deposit of fold quartz and that is what caused the scar. If that is the case, the Windermerians may have a cache of fold quartz at their disposal and with the assistance of the Epsilon Corp, were able to install enhanced fold drives aboard the Aerial Knight SV-262 fighters. Essentially a fold in the 2050's Macross era is a wormhole and if you have a ship capable of opening a large enough aperture, a larger force could piggy back into SD space from that point. It would however, require the same ship to open the exit portal. Prior to MF, folds were depicted like instantaneous jumps rather than transits to and from SD space.
  18. I see where you are going, but the Var is a virus not a bacteria. At this point we have no idea if the PC in the region ever found a cure. There is a possibility they were able to control the symptoms if Seto's theory is correct.
  19. I like to believe Max had amazing situational awareness which is what made him such a genius pilot. He could anticipate and react to the flow of a battle faster and better than any of his peers. I suspect it would also depend on if the Elysion's fold drive utilized any fold quartz or not. At this point we don't know how old the Elysion's design is. Whether it's systems pre-date the events of Frontier or not? I would suspect she does pre-date the late 2050's as the briar patch of faults surrounding Windermere is an obstacle to a direct assault on the world and fold quarts provides a ship the ability to cut through said faults.
  20. I am leaning toward a suspicion Seto mentioned in the Mecha thread, that the ruins may be antenna designed as a protection shield for the cluster from the Var. A condition first discovered by the long gone PC colonists of the region. By destroying one node, it will create a gap that will let the Var rage unchecked in the region. The "artifact" may have been a projector for an Anima Spiritia soldier to calm the disease back in the day. The Windermereans are playing with a torch they know little about and these events may well burn everyone in the process.
