Thanks @Slave IV @m0n5t3r. It's fun to think up new ways to present these old figures.

I'm telling myself to wait for some 'flu' downtime to watch Macross 7 lol, but I have been rather unlucky so far in that aspect. :p
I think it's just the sheer number of episodes that is a bit daunting, and like @Sanity is Optional's experience, so many have mentioned needing to get past the first 1/4 or so episodes before it gets good.

The concept of playing musical instruments while flying valks always sound bonkers to me, but just only couple weeks back I found out that the official line art actually do detail how the instruments interface with the valk to fly. Small mind blown moment there..

Yeah, there is some silly stuff and filler but even after all the episodes, it leaves you (or me at least) to want more. Plus a lot of the concepts, as crazy as they might be are part of the fun and creativity in anime that you don't get as much of anymore.

IMHO....Anyone who tries to remove Bandai Tampo on a $300 toy....ESPECIALLY on blue or painted blue plastic.... is either crazy or has way too much $$$ to blow. 🫣

Haha, or just very obsessive. I’d be sad if I had to find an inconsistent (in so many ways) image to compare my toys to enjoy them. But also get that some people gotta do what they gotta do and it’s all good if that floats their boats.

As someone who never watched it until a couple years ago... this take is heavily influenced by nostalgia.

Its not a bad series, but it suffers heavily from things such as repeated plotlines, repeated animation, an amazingly slow start, and tbh a 1dimensional protagonist with no character growth.

The music is good, but suffers from Planet Dance being THE song for many episodes, to the point where I was sick of it by thr time something else came on.

Haha, while I agree with much of this, the same or worse can be said for the other series. I like them all but this one feels the most like a proper SDFM sequel to me, which is the main reason I like it so much. Next is M0, which is a great prequel. The rest of the series just seem to exist with Valks, Singing and the Tri-Theme tying them together.

Macross 7 the only series I've yet to watch. But the toys have grown on me..

    Merry Christmas everyone!

Nice pic! You should watch it though. It’s the best series other than the original…by far. Imo.

I'm sure they'd sell at least a dozen or so.

At this point, it might actually make sense to just produce the unassembled kits again, especially if they could find a way to make them in the original Yamato DYRL white, since they'd essentially be supporting the secondary market with spare parts for all of the aging original releases.

This would make sense and sounds great even though I have no issues with any of mine. Thing is, as much as I want reissues of rare Valks, part of the reason they are rare is because they probably didn’t make a lot to begin with and those still took a while to sell, even at discount so it’s reasonable to expect the same would happen again. It’s part of what put Yamato out of business in the first place.

I also bought a prototype Zentran figure fron him...but dang if I know where I stored it

Dang! Congrats to the select few who own them! Did each one come with a sketch like that Milia? If so, even more sweet!

I've only seen and read positive things about Mo-show. But always looking forward to more pics and insight from a Macross collector.

I Have Moshow Takeda Shingen and it is among the best quality, engineered, hefty and detailed figures I have at any price, let alone being around half the price of a Metal Build. It's bigger, better and cheaper than the mostly compared Metal Build figures I have.

I kinda totally forgot that cameras have flash these days, what with all the advancement in phone cams these days lol.

Those cards, including the ones for cars, were the one of best educational subjects during school bus rides.

Yeah, I had fighter jets and tanks though. I gotta find my cards...I know they are stored away somewhere.

Never much like delta-winged fighter jets, purely on visuals, until fairly recently. I trace the bias to the Top Trumps fighter jets card game in the younger days, whereby the delta-winged ones were always somewhat middling in stats compared to those that are top or near the top and were almost always the US 4th gen planes. Fast forward to this HMR VF-0D, it is currently a top favorite..

Super Trump Cards! Those were the days. I had specs for every fighter jet of the times memorized.

Yeah i actually bought these a while back. There was some concern about the contact points scratching the toy. I cut out the excess material from the sticky feet pad to stick on the contact pads. It's seems to work find other than the these stands being a bit tippy.

Yeah, they aren't the best and looks boring if you have more than 2-3 of them on the same shelf but just another good option in the variety of ways to display the sea of valks in most of our collections.😆

  11. Closest thing to that I saw was a complete Jetfire in really good condition for $15. I let my friend get it because I already have my original plus Takatoku/Bandai Valks.

  12. That’s the great thing about having tons of basically the same toy in HMR, DX, Yamacadia or whatever form. I play with them whenever I want and usually have so many from each line that I don’t think I’ve ever worn one particular one down.

While I am not as crazy as you, I do have most of the releases and too many multiple of cannon fodders and Hikaru VF-1Js. The one that got me in was I got the Monster. And the Monster looked lonely, so I got a Defender and Spartan. And then I said I needed a glaug. And a regult. And the missile regults because I needed some of those. And some more regults. I finally bit on a Valk by convincing myself that I didn't have the Messer Memorial scheme on any other releases. It's been all downhill since then.

This sounds about right. The Monster is an incredible release!

I'm sure most people around here are aware of this fact, but the "Hi Metal" branding started way back when they were making the 1/55 "chunky monkeys."  I'm not exactly sure why they ever put "Hi-Metal" on the box (maybe someone knows the story behind that), but it's been a part of their branding for Macross since the 80s.

They brought back that branding around 2010 when they did the first reboot of the Hi-Metal line, which strangely, was just called Hi-Metal again (shouldn't that one have been Hi-Metal R?).  And now we're on the 3rd iteration of that branding with Hi-Metal R (R?).  There's never been a lot of metal in any of them; it's a branding thing.  Is it misleading? Maybe, but it's been around forever, and it's pretty clear this is meant to be, at least in part, a nostalgia bait line, so they're going to lean into that.

The chogokin line (超合金) isn't made out of... super alloys... whatever that would be, and people don't seem to complain about that.

I'm not saying I love the name, but it is what it is, and it's been around for decades, and I get why they want to keep that branding around.

Yes, but that original did have a decent amount of metal. You can club someone to death with it and still transform it no problem afterwards.😁

For what one regular Arcadia VF-0D goes for these days as well the 0S, I can have 3 of these HMR's, one for each mode.

And if I'm nuts enough, a 4th for just in case. 😆

For the price of one Lambo, I can get an Audi, Porsche, Benz, and if I'm nuts, maybe even a Subaru.😉

I missed out on the Regult... at the time I met my wife and distanced myself from collecting. Maybe Bandai will re-release it?

There is that Regult Scout still floating around waiting for a release or not knowing Bandai. Also could check the upcoming KC one and hope it’s close to being as good.

  16. I know when I first heard about the HMR line and saw the reviews, I thought the same thing. Hi-Metal with barely any metal huh? Pass. Then I got a Regult and was so blown away with how good it was I ended up getting ever single HMR release with many multiples and never looked back.

Which Dx releases have gone to clearance though?  If the tv Max 1A release didn’t then the more “expected” schemes  should do well enough.  It’s so low risk for them I think they’re leaving money on the table.

Low risk, maybe but the main thing is low returns. But don't underestimate the risks...Yamato made every variant a Macross collector could want and some in a relatively short period of time and look what happened to them. Don't want to get any more into a discussion about how supply and demand works but there is no reason for Bandai to worry about a few people whining that they couldn't get a Macross release they wanted or that they want more Macross releases because they will get to it when they get to it. Meanwhile, pump more resources into other items that they know there is much more demand for and therefore profit involved.

It's safe to assume most Macross collectors also collect other high end toys and if all of a sudden, Bandai released every version of the VF-1 in a short period just because they could, a lot of us couldn't or wouldn't keep up and you get another repeat of the Yamato situation where a bunch are on clearance for a while before they all dry up and by then, Bandai won't want to deal with Macross and what's left in the secondary market skyrockets even more for the few of us to fight over.

Basically, just chill and get the releases you want when/if they come and don't worry about it so much.

    This.

Sometimes I wonder if just only the die-hard Gundam Metal Build community that buys multiples of each release, already out numbers the whole of the Macross Fandom that purchases valks.

I don't think there is any doubt about this. Especially when comparing MB buyers to comparable high end Valks (Arcadia and DX level).

    1 hour ago, glane21 said:

Keeping the gundam metal build comparison going- I know the gundam fandom overall is much larger than Macross, but the metal build collector community is a sub group that reduces the population greatly due to their expensive price tags.  Designing and Tooling each new metal build is intensive and expensive.

Now consider that the DX valk tooling is all done (sans Elint and Ostrich.)   All they have to do is alternate the head and color way to pump out  every pilot or fodder variant.  Monetize that mold. Low effort / high reward.  That’s why the slow releases are puzzling and extra frustrating.

Same answer. Because the number of people who buy high end (or any) Macross is much lower so why would they just keep pumping out repaints/remolds that are most likely going to the same people? We've already seen that the less popular models usually don't sell out as fast and even go on clearance. Given the assumption that Bandai already produces less of the less popular talks and that still happens, tells you a lot about how small the market really is.
