It looks both better and worse when you're actually wandering around in it (better in that the lighting came out really nice and the environment is super cool, worse in that I can see up close and personal all the mistakes I made on the models), but fun to see it starting to come together. Lots more to do to make it functional, and I really need to figure out how to make vehicles work because walking the 5 kilometers from the port to the city takes forever. 😉

A long period of quiet from me, but progress has been happening. I think I mentioned it somewhere upthread, but one of the goals I have in making these models is to bring them into Unity and build....well, I'm still not sure exactly what, but at the very least I want to be able to walk around in these worlds and interact with this stuff. Maybe someday I'll get to the point of actually being able to climb into a Valkyrie and fly around, but for now I'm still in the baby steps. I've worked with a couple of different environments over the past month, but last night decided to pull the Al Shahal stuff I shared above into a test scene to try a few things out. Still very much Hello World level, but here are a couple of screen shots to give a human level view of some of the same things shown before. Probably only interesting for me, but figured I would share anyway.

Just got my copy delivered yesterday, and I fully agree this is an amazing book! It's crazy the amount of detail they went into for each of these designs, way deeper than anything actually used in the anime, it seems, though that understanding of the designs certainly informs the solidity of what you see on the screen. I almost feel like these planes could actually be built from the level of detail presented here. Great book, worth every penny, and very much appreciate you guys highlighting it here, otherwise I'd have never known it existed! Thank you!

Hey there, and sorry for the long silence, life got in the way for a few weeks. I did manage to pull the rip into Unity and load the models, but have not gotten a clean export of any of them so far. I think it has to do with the way they are rigged for transformation, the converter tools I have get confused and jumble the parts when turning them to other formats. I'm sure there's a way to fix that, but I'm not enough of a coder to do it. I will say, the quality of these models is a fairly significant step down from the ones in M30 or MDS, so if you're looking for well modeled, transformable planes those might be better options. Mostly, I'm hoping the other stuff that's been posted in the meanwhile has given you what you're after and you've been able to make progress without waiting on me. I will probably poke at this a bit more, but am not sure I'll be able to get any further than I have. Sorry about that.

I have no idea, but would think it's likely. They've been leaning into the Macross availability at the (admittedly very few) events I've been to recently where they had a presence. To the rest of the discussion, I completely get the frustration everyone has with this release, but as a member of the target audience for it, I totally get why this is first out of the gate for Delta. I only started collecting about two years ago as previously it was too difficult, too expensive, and too 'unnecessary' in my life. Time passes and things change, though, so now I find myself starting to look at getting things I would have never considered before, just because I can and it fits where I am in my life now. I did not buy any of these toys on first release, and while I've picked up one or two in the aftermarket, the Alto 25F with super parts bundle was exactly the spur I needed to get started. That toy at that price available through a US distributor? I didn't even think twice. This release is the same. It is squarely aimed at people like me. I will likley wait until the US prices drop a little before picking it up, but I'm happy it's here. Would I rather have a 31A? Absolutely, but this is still a nice thing to be able to get here. Just my two cents, for what it's worth.

New Macross Animation Announced, to be animated by Sunrise
guyxxed replied to seti88's topic in Movies and TV Series
Fully agree with moving on to a new story and new people (as Macross is most likely to do regardless of what we want). I want to see more of this universe and not keep retreading over the same people and events (ahem, Star Wars, looking at you). Honestly, I'd be super happy if the next Macross story was smaller and they gave up on the galaxy smashing threats for a bit. A Macross Plus or Macross the Ride sized story would be a nice change after trying to mind control the universe (again). Really, I'll just be happy that there's new Macross, whatever they decide to do, but I think it would serve them well to go in a smaller, more personal direction the next time out. -
Nice to hear from you, getfresh. Speaking as someone who's entire experience of Macross for years came from fansubbed files, I really appreciate the time and effort everyone put into making those available. If not for those files, I may never have bothered keeping up with the franchise despite it being one of my early, formative loves. At least not until current days where official versions are starting to surface. Thank you!

Thanks! Give me a few days to dig my Unity machine back out (my laptop can't run it) and I'll give it a try. No promises, I'm no expert, but I am very stubborn. 😉 we'll see if that translates into progress.

That's essentially what we've been doing so far, yes. It's simple and it works. 😁

No worries, no offense taken, just explaining a bit but sounds like you've been there too. 😉 No, I've not come across an Uraga so far. I've not actually played any of these games, so I don't knowbif they make appearances in them, but I can definitively say that there is nothing in the model list that we can extract for the Uraga. Sorry! On the M30 archive, I was able to use an online service to download from it without needing to set up an account. I don't remember what one it was anymore, basically just Googled "baidu online download" and picked the least annoying one I could find. I remember that they were all annoying in some way or form, but it worked. 😁

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm definitely just an amateur messing around with these models in my spare time, so I have no doubt I'm making mistakes on some of them. I didn't make the VF25 collections (ironic since I was the one making all the VF25 variants in the other thread), so I can't speak to the missing parts, but I can tell you that in Macross 30 every component is stored as a separate file that has to be imported on its own and then placed together into a collection to appear as a "complete" plane, so perhaps Nepture Minowa just hasn't gotten that far yet. If you need those parts, they are avaialable in the "battle carrier 3D model" thread, which has links to the full extract archives in the second page. On the scale, you're exactly correct. For some reason, Macross 30 has all the models just a little shy of twice their "actual" size. Don't know if it's an artefact of the import tool or just the way they were made. The Macross Delta Scramble models, by contrast, seem to import in almost exactly 1:1 scale. I've corrected scale where I've needed to (putting objects together into a scene) but not bothered yet on the stand alone ones. It's like a sandbox where we're all playing with someone else's toys: not always perfect, but usually still fun! 😉

Hey, there! Very cool about Shooting Insight, interested to see what you can do there, please let us know your results. The models posted in various thresds here were (mostly) extracted from Macross 30 and Macross Delta Scramble. Some of the Macross 30 models have pilot figures and very basic cockpits modeled into them, but nothing that would be adequate for a VR setup like what you're describing. The page linked below has links to both extraction archives if you want to take a look, though it takes a little patience to work with the tools involved. Incidentally, the user near the end of that thread appears to be working on something similar to you and has already built something of a cockpit, so you may want to reach out to them directly if you haven't already and see if there is an opportunity for collaboration.

Fully agree with that. I remember when I first saw a VF-1 thinking "it still looks like a plane" even when in battroid mode. Most other transforming mechs, both before and since, have a tendency to look blocky and have compromises to favor what they look like in robot mode. Kawamori's Macross designs have always prioritized thier primary function first, and that grounds them in reality (or, at least, a version of it) in a way that most other designs aren't. Doesn't hurt that he's a genius mechanical designer, either.

Small update here. Added the SV-262, the Glaug, and the Cheyenne from Delta Scramble to the archive, along with the Monster in both Shuttle and Gerwalk from Macross 30. Also added is the Frontier version of the VF-171 in fighter, since that was the scheme that sparked me to start down the road in developing my Frontier NUNS version of the VF-25 in the other thread. Hopefully this gives everyone some nice toys to play with and maybe we'll see some other creations posted in the 3D collection thread soon!

Whoa, that hanger looks great in that render! I'm used to seeing it in the Blender screens, it really pops with the right lighting. If that's a WIP, I'm looking forward to the finished product! I also really like the color scheme on the 31A. The VF-1D was my favorite from the original show, the tan and red scheme just caught my eye and was different than most other plane liveries you see, and this feels a lot like that. Nice work!

I feel like it showed up in the anime somewhere as well, didn't it? I seem to recall someone blowing off the shield and having a transparent canopy for one scene, but maybe I'm making that up. Anyway, here is a very quick try at a "real" 262 in all grey. I had an idea to do full Swedish air force colors, but it turns out that's actually pretty close to the normal Delta Draken colors, so I went with military grey instead and removed some of the sensor ports on the canopy. It could definitely use some panel lines, but those will have to wait until I get more time (and patience to trace all the polygons across the billion and one seams they built into this model, I seriously don't think there's any part of this model that doesn't split apart and move from one mode to the next).
-
Surprise! The clear canopies ARE actually part of the maps in the game, just not used for the most part (I guess? Never played the game, so don't know if they get used or not). Here's the Roidling with the canopy remapped to the clear version.
-
The Royal Roidling Shuttle, I like it! 😉 I'm with you that the Elvis valk isn't too appealing. When I get a little time I might try a "real" map for a 262, like the 31A colors. Probably will just make it look like a real world Saab, could be interesting to see one without all the bling. I was tempted to try Bogue's red livery, but couldn't get much enthusiasm for it. I like it better than the white and gold, but that wasn't a high bar to clear. 😉
-
Yeh, I think you're right. I took the color from a screen grab, but putting it up against the toy, it is too bright. Here's a downshifted version. Also, yes, the Roid Grunts (Roid Minions? Roid-lings?) are in the game. Nothing too exciting, but here you go.

2202 was a lot less grounded than 2199 (which is saying something for a show that features a WWII battleship in space!), and I didn't like where they went with Yuki's character, but I do think overall that it managed to tell a thematically powerful story. Yamato has historically leaned much more in the cosmic than in the grounded real, so it's staying true to its roots even if I would have liked something crunchier overall. In the end, I liked 2202 and agree that 2205 is a step up. Looking forward to what comes next!

Had some time, so here you go: Mirage 262 both with original Lil-Drakkens and color matched (sort of, it got to be too much pink, so I slid them down to purple, which I think looks pretty good). Also, here is the sword wielding Roid for fun. He looks kind of bored, but I haven't messed with posing these models yet, so anything more dramatic will have to wait.
-
There is a version with the Lil Drakens, so I'll put it on the list. And, no, there's no sword compartment or missiles in the pods, although both exist in the model directory. Roid's plane is holding the sword in battriod mode. It's a crazy complicated model even so, which I suppose matches the design and toy, a million little bits and pieces.
-
Thanks to Reaper7092, I've now been able to access the SV-262 models from Delta Scramble. Elvis is in da house! 😉 As a quick celebratory project, I made the Mirage version of the Ba. Enjoy!

Thanks. I really just took the original Regult model from M30, put the Type 104 texture on it, then started deleting parts and adding in Queadluun Rhea parts. The only thing I made myself was the tubes on top, everything else was just grabbed from other models (with some stretching). The fact that it looks right just means that's also how they did it for the show. 😉
-
So this happened today. Didn't set out with this in mind, was just flipping through reference images for Al Shahal and kept bumping over the Type 106 (or the "Regult Rhea", as I like to call it), and kept thinking to myself "it's really weird this wasn't in Delta Scramble, it's just a cool design. Someone should make it." Then I thought, "It's just a kitbash, I bet I could put it together fairly quick." And then an hour or so later this is sitting on my screen. Still some texture work to do, and a bit of modelling on the shoulders to make it anime accurate, but overall...yeah, it's a kitbash, exactly what it looks like. Was fun to throw together, though, and a nice distraction. Never underestimate the power of rabbit holes, is the lesson here, I think.
