I was just thinking "there MUST BE a video game or anime by that name..." Anyway, saw it again tonight, and while my criticisms still stand, I also still ultimately had lots of fun with it. There's one shot near the beginning of the movie though that really irritated me both times I've seen it. When Jake first comes to the Shatterdome and is I think going into his room or something... it's a shot from inside the room facing the door and he opens it and enters... there's a window behind his left shoulder just off from the center of the screen, and there's a big ol' bloom of light coming from it that I keep wanting to shoo out of the shot because it's so god damn distracting. It's right next to the focus of the shot, clearly the intent is for people's eyes to follow Jake as he's the only thing moving in the shot, but it's just RIGHT THERE, like a little shoulder devil casually stripping while we're all having a casual conversation and no one seems to notice it but me. I don't know why it bothers me that much, but it does... Also they really REALLY dialed up the orange-blue contrast, that was also super annoying. Like John Boyega looks fine in the daytime shots, fellas, no need to supercharge him so he looks like a ripe tangerine...

IIRC, the only rights Tatsunoko has is the international distribution rights to the original SDFM. The reason no one is going ahead with releasing the sequels is because of the Tatsu/HG deal/fiasco. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This thread started flying over my head long ago, but I can still gawk and ooh and aah at the end result. This is too good. How well is the arm doing holding up the Valk? The VF by itself is pretty light, but it has all the added electronics and is being held way out on the end of the arm. You worried at all about things holding together, or is the arm and base pretty sufficiently reinforced?

Release date from Bandai was the 15th. Resellers listed their own "release dates," ie when they anticipated getting their stock in (3-23 for Mykombini, 3-24 for NY, etc.)

According to the ever trustful Wikipedia, the OVA debuted in August '94, whereas the movie (ie the better one fight me) came out almost an exact year later. I'll take either, of course. 2020 is a nice rounded number.

The Kotobukiya 1/60 Laevatein is roughly 14-15cm tall (about the size of a small MG), so I'd imagine these will be, too. "Real" thing = 8-10m (26-33 ft) 1/48 kits = 16-21cm (6.3-8.3 in) 1/60 kits = 13-17cm (5-6.7 in)

New Macross TV Series in 20xx (sometime this decade)
kajnrig replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
But wasn't the show supposed to debut this year? Title and trailer reveal in the fall would suggest it's an early 2019 anime at the earliest... -
If I had ordered from NY I would have gladly taken you up on that offer, somewhere around five pages ago. But alas, my non-precognizant self going to Mykombini instead... Anyway, I think I'm out of this discussion now. Best of luck to the rest of you, whether it's in getting the item, a refund, store credit, a gold bar... But someone PM me please if suddenly there's a new production run announced. And remember, this one was Alpha 03, and Arad's -31A is Alpha 01, meaning there's at least one other Alpha to hope for...

They definitely hit on a sure thing back in 2009. Me, I'll still always prefer my DMCs and Bayos and Metal Gear Risings... okay, basically I'll just prefer my Platinum Games... but Arkham combat most definitely has aged very well.- 6837 replies

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
kajnrig replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think it might be, at least partly, that the CGI is animated at a significantly higher framerate (60? 30?) than the characters and other "traditionally-drawn" parts of the show. It looks more like a cel-shaded video game, juxtaposing against the anime parts that typically animate at between 6-12 frames per second. I dunno... There are other aspects to it that I just don't like, like how everything has very heavy, cartoony lining... except headlights, jet exhaust, other things that produce light. The overabundance of bright blue (especially for said light-producing objects) has plagued UC Gundam from the moment they decided to go with this style of animation. It's all very shiny and technically impressive, but it never quite gels together the way a good production should. I'm watching some of IBO, and it occurs to me that the animation there is more bearable despite being lower quality. There's less discrepancy between the CGI mecha and the anime characters. (But also I just don't like a lot of the UC stuff anyway, so... yeah...)- 3717 replies

So I think we can all agree now that it wasn't the shops that were intentionally holding back stock for whatever reason, but Bandai. The same thing happening to all of the major resellers (and only the one item, remember, everything else from Bandai has been smooth sailing) and even to those in local territories... The conspiracy theory that NY are artificially creating demand in order to drive up scalping prices later down the road is kind of dead in the water, yes? Yes? These things are appreciating on the level of bitcoins. By this time next year, you'll be able to sell this for the price of a car and still have people tripping over themselves to give you money.

Spider-Man 2's one saving grace is its web-swinging mechanic. Fortunately, that one mechanic is so good as to make up for all of the other middling to downright bad aspects of the game. The PS1 Spider-Man is definitely not as good, but it's a more balanced package. At least in both cases, the CGI cutscenes are equally eye-searing. The original AC had "Detective Mode" a full two years before Arkham Asylum debuted with the same thing. Granted, AA actually had some use for it, but still... Heck, even the recent Spider-Man games have incorporated AA mechanics of one variety or another into them. It's like a disgusting ouroboros of gameplay design.- 6837 replies

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
kajnrig replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
This might be an absurd criticism, but I absolutely loathe that they're still using the same sound effects that the original show did. I mean in general, mecha anime have been using the same stock sounds in perpetuity, but still... it gets a bit more annoying when it's Gundam, the supposed god-king, the pillar franchise of the entire genre.- 3717 replies

2019 would be its 25th anniversary, yes? Seems like a good time to coincide a toy release.

Bit of column A, bit of column B, methinks. A store that normally places a high priority on customer service and communication suddenly doesn't, and a store that has notoriously bad customer service and communication lives up to its reputation. To be fair, the Batman Arkham games looks like Spider-Man with a Batman skin on him, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Does anyone remember the old PS1 Spider-Man game? Was watching an LP of it the other day and boy is it still as entertaining as it was as a kid, and still mostly mechanically sound, too. For being the first 3D Spider-Man game, they got a lot of the mechanics down exactly right.- 6837 replies

As far as I'm aware, none of us here at MWF who ordered from them got theirs. If you spoke to others and they didn't get theirs, either, that raises some questions... Some (I want to say a slim majority?) CDJ customers got theirs, but like NY and MK and presumably others, some customers didn't. --- Anyway, heard back from MK. The gist of it is: - If Bandai decides to do anything, MK can't talk about it before Bandai does. (Understandable.) - If Bandai reproduces this toy, MK will offer it for sale. - If MK offers it for sale, they will give priority to... me, at least, and presumably all other canceled preorder customers as well, as well as offer a (nonspecific) discount on price plus shipping. (Dunno if this will hold true, I wasn't and won't be expecting it to hold true, but I'm certainly not dissuaded from giving them another go either way.)

What is the "release date" for NY? Would the Paypal preorder deadline be 20 days from that, or 20 days from the initial Bandai release date (3-15-2018)?

They did do a bang-up job on the Jaeger names, didn't they? Shame they didn't do the same for the characters. Jake Pentecost? Couldn't at least have gone with Jacobi Pentecost? Say what you will about the acting, but Raleigh Becket is a great name. All the first movie's characters had great names. Jake, Amara, and Nate... just don't compare. Still, all this positive feedback makes me want to see it again now. Gonna try and snag a cheap seat this weekend.

Just sent Mykombini an email asking if they could provide any insight on whether Bandai is gearing up a second production run or not, and whether they would be taking orders again if so. It's a long shot, but it's not as if I have anything to lose from it.
