Captain Marvel, in theaters Mar. 8, 2019
kajnrig replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Speaking of the origins of Captain Marvel (Thanks to this forum, I just keep getting recc'ed these videos now, and this one's actually not bad scratch that, the second half gets kind of strawman-y or at least is referencing something I'm completely out of the loop on, but the actual character history in the first half seems to check out): Thinking on it more, I think I'm gonna go with the same opinion that a podcast I listen to made, which is basically "There were two Marvels they could have made a movie about, and they chose the wrong one. Brie Larson doesn't bring a lot of charisma to the role, and Kamala Khan is way more interesting as a character in every way." That said, I've never read any works about either character, so what do I know. The extent of my knowledge of either of them is that Danvers once had a crush on Peter Parker, and Kamala writes Wolverine fanfiction.- 213 replies

Neon Genesis EVANGELION General Thread

I don't think so. We were simply discussing the fact that there is a new English dub; Netflix aren't going with the old ADV dub.- 998 replies

Confession: I like the Strike perfectly fine all on its own. Give it that big ol' sword the PG comes with and that's all the extra equipment it needs.

Neon Genesis EVANGELION General Thread

I dunno about that. Cowboy Bebop's American dub famously set such a high bar for English dub work that even director Shinichiro Watanabe prefers it to the original Japanese dub, and there have been more good to great dubs since then. That said, I think the only reason NGE's dub is remembered as a good one is because that's what people heard on Cartoon Network as kids. I think I bought the original DVDs/VHSes before they ever got the show on CN, so I had the choice of not listening to it. I'm sure there must be some Spanish dubs (either done in Chile or elsewhere) that have outdone their original Japanese counterparts.- 998 replies

Neon Genesis EVANGELION General Thread
kajnrig replied to no3Ljm's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Same and same. Tiffany Grant (Asuka) conveniently actually knew German, so her lines were actually intelligible as opposed to the original VA's Nihongerman. But besides that, I didn't find any bit of the English dub that interesting. I think Grant even ad-libbed some of her German (because of the aforementioned unintelligible Nihongerman), which potentially fundamentally messed with the associated scenes. The English dub of EoE similarly took some creative liberties, including to the audio mixing, that missed their marks.- 998 replies

Bumping some threads to let as many interested parties know. HLJ Spring sale. Arcadia Super VF-1J Milia was up there, probably others as well.

In case anyone's interested, HLJ's spring sale is going on. I think I saw a HMR VT-1 when I did a quick glance.

Specifically, they added DXR support to their non-RTX cards (from the original 1060 6GB card and up). DXR being a non-proprietary implementation of real-time ray-tracing through I think DX12. Their RTX cards (ie those with tensor cores) will still be able to use their proprietary RT... tech? hardware? whatever... to do ray-tracing, maybe in conjunction with or instead of through DXR. Here's an example of DXR (IIRC) being integrated into CryEngine. They render this video using a Vega 56.- 6837 replies

What Current Manga Are You Reading?
kajnrig replied to RavenHawk's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
This isn't strictly manga, but I thought I'd share anyway for anyone interested. In case you wanted to read the light novels these designs come from, a company called "J-Novel Club" are re-releasing the FMP! novels with a brand new translation. https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2019/03/18/j-novel-club-announces-full-metal-panic-novels-and-more You can read a preview on the product page: https://j-novel.club/s/full-metal-panic I had thought that only the manga had been localized, but I guess some of those volumes I passed by in the Borderses and BnNs were actually the novels. -

I wouldn't say Captain Marvel is exactly game-changing. Her powers don't seem that different from Thor's, with or without Mjolnir/Stormbreaker.

Captain Marvel, in theaters Mar. 8, 2019
kajnrig replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Saw it yesterday. It was fine, but the character herself is hardly memorable compared to the other members of the cast. I don't think she's compelling enough as is to carry another movie on her own, certainly not as much as, say, Black Widow or so. She also has an... irascibility to her that makes her kind of fundamentally unappealing as a protagonist. Or rather, I should say that her personality doesn't reflect her story. She's kind of sarcastically mean for the sake of being sarcastically mean. There's a throwaway line at the beginning that she uses humor to deflect, but other than that one mention, it's never brought up again and she never really grows out of it or reframes it or... does anything with it. Starlord is a lot of the same, but both movies - the second especially - do a lot more with it than the writers manage to do here with Danvers. It feels like this Captain Marvel is just sort of going through the motions of a superhero origin story rather than living through one. Still, all else aside, it was fun popcorn fare while it lasted.- 213 replies

Disney's live action Aladdin May 2019
kajnrig replied to jvmacross's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Jafar doesn't sound or look nearly as old as he should. That whole "The Princess will marry me" ploy probably won't play this time around. I didn't have a problem with Blue Smith, but I did suspect they would have him shifting skin tone throughout the movie, so I'm not surprised to see more of the regular skin tone here. As for the singing, aren't they recycling the animated movie song? I don't think that's the live-action actors... And I thought Prince of Persia was fine. Nothing to write home about, and that whitewashing scandal was icky, but it was about as good a video game movie as a video game movie could have been... -

This. I have a decent internet connection and even then I can't stand the ridiculous 10-, 20-, 50-GB patches that these (mainly Western, I've noticed) devs routinely put out to fix their broken, premature games. It's a terrible symptom of the current AAA industry business model. It's a long enough wait to just get the game off the disc onto the console, I'm not going to put up with downloading basically the entire game again.- 6837 replies

I understand WHY the characters (or at least figures of them) aren't as popular as one would expect, I just find it odd that they're still being pushed so hard everywhere else regardless. I'd have thought they'd make at least one more token effort at figures of them. Like I said, however I felt about them as part of the show, I'd have paid good money for figures of them in their various movie outfits.
-
Given how popular Walkure apparently is, and how much the anime members are pushed in general art material and the like, I'm surprised there aren't more figures of them. I keep saying I'd pay good money for the lot of them in their movie costumes.

I'm still saving up for the previous Kuji figure... Sheesh. And apparently another company is working on rendering the "Gorgeous!" single into a figure. https://myfigurecollection.net/item/806255

I don't disagree. X2's setup was great. Nods here and there, a self-sacrifice to cleanly end those nods if the movie happens to bomb (it didn't), and barely a teaser at the very very end just in case. But the Phoenix story doesn't properly begin until X3, and we all know how that turned out. I only know the Phoenix saga by osmosis, and even then I don't think the interstellar angle was a big part of it either. I just want the X-Men to go do dumb outer space stuff, The movies feel like they take themselves way too seriously. Again, like they're still ashamed of their comic book origins or something. Yes, and done well, I think such a setup can work well enough. But given that they failed with that setup last time, it boggles my mind that they would seem to be going right back to it, and this time with a far less compelling Jean Grey to boot. Sansa Stark is a great actress, but the Jean of DofP(?)/Apocalypse/DP is about as bland as plain white toast. In order for an alternate personality to work there has to be a primary one to begin with, and this Jean Grey just does not have such a thing. ...or maybe I'm just being my usual debbie downer. I thought DoFP and Apocalypse were equally terrible movies, so I'm coming into this already predisposed to cynicism. By "First Class," do you mean the movie, or are you referring to I'm guessing a comic book run? Eh... I suppose the films, mostly (in which case the sample size is all of one, in which case my point is kind of moot, in which case... shut up). As I said above, I only know the Phoenix Saga in the comics by osmosis. I do remember reading one or two of the latter comics in the run during my youth, but by then the story had devolved into such weirdness that I didn't know what was going on anymore.

The Phoenix story just seems really... boring. At its heart, it's only ever told as a garden-variety "female empowerment and/or sexual freedom is baaaaad" morality tale, which aside from being tasteless as hell also lacks anything for anyone to do or be, including and especially the titular Phoenix of the story. There are thematic/metaphorical elements aplenty that can be gleaned from THE SYMBOL OF REBIRTH, but even setting that aside, all the goofy space alien shenanigans from the comics that feed into and out of the Phoenix story just goes completely to waste. I get the distinct impression that the franchise still has this lingering mindset from the very first movie that all of that stuff is somehow "beneath" it or something.
