I'm surprised they managed to snag Zen 2 architecture. I thought for sure the new CPU would be based on the 1-year older Zen+ architecture. That's some infrastructure they've got in place to support such a new design so soon.- 6837 replies

Cross your eyes, and that becomes box art of the VF-19 Kai, and suddenly I like the Kai's design. EDIT: It appears to be getting ready for take-off on the space catapult like in the anime. I seem to recall the -31s having their wheels down despite being in space. Anyone care to confirm/deny? Also, is that Mirage's Makina-colored -31C peeking in from the left side of the pic?

Also this. When did this sentiment - both that Ep 3 was good, and that it elevated Eps 1 and 2 - begin to take root? I know the general consensus is that 3 is the best of the trio (I'd personally go 1 > ...gulf... > 3 > ...another gulf... > 2), but does that make it a good movie?

Eh, so it was a tenuous hypothesis at best. Just saw an unusual bam-bam-bam of R1 mentions and wanted to make sense of it.

what no way ea is a fine publisher with an unblemished reputation I've never been a big fan of Bioware, but... oof. What's come out about that studio since its acquisition by EA (and to a lesser degree even pre-dating it), is... oof. But yeah, back to the point, I do think that of all the studios to have been gobbled up by EA, Respawn has done the best job of fighting back against the shitty everything that EA likes to force on its studios. I imagine that resilience will help it remain a quality studio longer than the Biowares and Viscerals of the world, but still... EA remains a freaking sword of Damocles hanging over the studio (and all of its games)'s metaphorical head.- 6837 replies

Let me know if I'm wrong here: - People who dislike TLJ generally like Rogue One. - People who like TLJ generally dislike Rogue One. I'm noticing that, in this recent batch of posts anyway, people who dislike TLJ cite the characters in relation to the world of Star Wars; it's not a good movie because they make poor decisions for someone living in that world. In the same vein, they cite a similar reason for liking R1: the congruity of the story as it relates to the world. The world of TLJ, and how the characters act within it, is incongruous. The world of R1, and how the characters act within it, is congruous. On the other hand, speaking for myself, I don't put quite so much stake in the world of Star Wars. It exists in service of the story being told instead of the other way around. Which is why I find more success in TLJ - the underlying structure of the story, the paths characters take, the themes they explore, etc. - than in R1. The former's characters are (mostly) firmly established at the beginning and go through significant change via interaction with each other. The latter's characters aren't, and thus it's hard to gauge what changes them and how by the end of the story.

So was CoD4, and it's fondly remembered as having one of the best single-player FPS campaigns ever. The first Titanfall had a pseudo-single player mode, but that stuff simply played out as radio chatter during multiplayer matches. It was a legit criticism, and one that the devs corrected in the sequel. I mean you're not wrong that it was included because people criticized the last game for not including one, but... I don't get why that's a ding against it. It's fair to say that EA is the source of a lot of games' problems... With Titanfall 2, they decided to release it between Battlefield 5 and whatever the CoD that year was, pretty much assuring that the already somewhat more niche Titanfall 2 would sell like crap. All decisions having to do with the game itself, though, it seemed the devs fought tooth and nail for autonomy on those. Vince Zampella, head of Respawn Entertainment, has a notoriously cold, sometimes combative relationship with EA. In an interview a few months after Titanfall 2's release, he was asked about the prospects of a third game. An EA PR spokesperson interrupted with something along the lines of "We are dedicated to fully supporting this franchise now and in the future," to which he openly scoffed and responded, "Yeah, whatever that means." What with the release and success of Apex Legends a few months ago now, I think Respawn are feeling pretty free to do whatever they want, and EA have hopefully learned to let them do their thing and to meddle as little as possible. That's fair. I bought it again for PS4 after Apex Legends came out (I originally got it on PC), and playing it with a controller felt incredibly clunky, and did noticeably affect my enjoyment of those first few hours. Maybe you can try it out on PC, but that would also necessitate you having to download the hot garbage that is EA Origin.- 6837 replies

Titanfall 2 IS a fantastic single-player game. It's the spiritual successor that Call of Duty 4's campaign sorely deserved. That said, I'm at the most only cautiously optimistic about this game. The pedigree of the developers indicates it'll be quality, but the pedigree of the publisher and the franchise (game-wise) does not.- 6837 replies

Oof. That sounds... unlivably unsafe. "You don't believe in the Force, do you?" "Oh, you mean that thing you just found out about three hours ago and are now judging me for not believing in?" I spent both movies expecting and hoping in the back of my mind for that very thing to happen, now that I think about it. It's especially bad given how the last movie was all about the dangers of clinging blindly to the past.

JJabrams is nothing if not consistent in offering up the rose-tinted glasses. I think I'd prefer if Rey just never made another lightsaber. Its absence would be a stark reminder of the ending of an era, and of Rey's incredibly unorthodox Jedi training. Besides, she's shown plenty of times she's adept with other melee weapons. Have her use electrified whips or something, I dunno, make it glow a little to justify it being able to clash against lightsabers. People have been able to do amazing whip fights on a budget one one-thousandth of this movie's. Does anyone else find that tag line to be unbelievably stupid? You can feel the corporate think-tank oozing from its every pore. And it's not even true. It sounds like this powerful and moving phrase on first glance, but it's little more than nonsensical gibberish when you think about it for even half a second. "Every saga has a beginning.", from the marketing for Episode 1, that worked great. It fit the movie, it was a true statement, etc. etc. "Every generation has a legend." Well yeah, except legends are stories that persist across many dozens if not hundreds of generations of people. What can charitably be called the "legend" of Rey's generation is largely the same as the "legend" of Luke's generation, ie the whole Jedi and Sith thing. Or is the "legend" of Rey's generation the story of the Rebels ie the events of the original trilogy? Is she going to come face to face with that "legend"? I mean she already has, so why make it seem like that will be the big point of this movie? I rolled my eyes through the entire trailer. I just... This trailer makes the movie seem aimless. Here's hoping that's not the case and expecting it will be.

What books are you currently reading?
kajnrig replied to kajnrig's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Going through these posts, I think I've got my reading list set for the next few months. Some new ones I didn't know about, and some reminders of classics that need catching up on. I'd been meaning to get on The King in Yellow since references to it seem to have increased in the last few years. On another note, I forget if I shared my friend's Kickstarter for a novel she was hoping to publish, but the Kickstarter was a success and published it she has. It's up on Amazon now, if you feel inclined to have a look-see: https://www.amazon.com/Mornnovin-Way-Falling-Star-Book-ebook/dp/B07PTBXQCV/ I received a physical copy for backing the campaign, and I'll be back with some thoughts on it soon...ish. -

I figure since there's an anime thread and a manga thread and a TV thread, there may as well be a literature thread, too. Unless no one here reads... which would be literally impossible, now I think on it, but ANYWAY I'll start off. I just finished "The Obelisk Gate," Book 2 of the Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. The trilogy is set on an Earth-like world with a single super continent populated by people with specific abilities that put them into this or that "use-caste" (ie character classes). The story follows an "orogene" (think earth-elemental magician) named Syenite who works for the Fulcrum, an organization that specializes in 1) training orogenes to use their power for the good of society, or 2) killing orogenes, either "wild" ones or young ones unable to control their powers, for the good of society. It's been a blast so far. Good characters, good writing. When I heard that each book in the trilogy won successive Hugo Awards I kind of did a face, thinking, "That's cheating..." But the quality of writing has been pretty deserving of the accolade. It also gets pretty anime at times, like the part where Syenite exclaims something like "You want me to catch the frakking moon!?" I imagine she would've been useful during a certain battle against a certain mad titan... Anyway. if anyone else has been reading anything or want to recommend stuff, have at it.

Who here have seen Shinkai's pre-Your Name works? He's been on my radar ever since Voices of a Distant Star, and his works have been hit or miss with me. Seems every other one is pretty good, with a mediocre one in between projects. Me, I tend to prefer his short stories. His feature-length films prior to Your Name have always been a bit too convoluted for their own good. Always beautiful to watch, though. -

Did somebody say missiles? For $70, you can get a dozen of them (in the right scale, too, no less!) plus a bunch of guns to go with! (Entirely irrelevant, I know, but I just finished snapping together this kit, and all this talk about missile packs made me think. HLJ link in case you're interested.)

I suppose it would be too much to hope that Arad's is armored...? I wouldn't care very much either way, but I would certainly enjoy the promotional pics.
