Around the 0:26 mark, are they still promoting the narrative that Japan attacked the hospitals and infirmaries at Pearl Harbor? Because I remember Michael Bay getting tons of flak for specifically that bit of revisionist history. At that point, they should just add in the giant transforming airborne supercarriers or I'm just not even interested.

Mmmmillennial says no thanks. That trailer was a dumpster fire of "modern" editing. The only draw here is it being directed by Elizabeth Banks, whose films as an actress have always been just slightly off-beat and weird. I never would have thought of her taking a role in something like Slither, for instance, and yet there she was, super game for it. (Apparently she was turned down for MJ in the Raimi Spider-Man films because she was "too old" at 28 and instead played Betty Brant. I never would have made the connection if I hadn't checked IMDB just now.)

IIRC, this design in particular is from the Blue Destiny side-story manga. Since I don't know anything about or care for the designs from Blue Destiny, this "run" of BD P-Bandai releases has been an easy pass. I'd have loved to see the AoZ kits in the RE/100 line, though. I thought that was the whole point of that line, was to feature more obscure designs with simpler but still high-quality engineering.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
kajnrig replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If you're watching the Netflix show, it almost certainly slows down in subsequent seasons. This first 2X-episode season blows through the first two major story arcs, whereas the third story arc is the more well known one. I myself am still stuck somewhere in that second story arc. I believe the rest of the show is on Crunchyroll. -

It's more literally accurate to the original Japanese terminology, which used "Children" to refer to both the singular and plural, so "First Children," "the Children," etc. (You can hear them specifically say "children" in the Japanese dub.) You can get away with that in Japanese because it doesn't have the same singular/plural noun distinction that English does; "Children" is just a cool-sounding word to them. But in English, as you say, it's grammatically incorrect and sounds truly, truly awful. The debate around the new dub centers around the same issue as has plagued translations from the beginning of time: being literally correct versus being thematically or emotionally correct. In the infamous hospital room scene, the Japanese dub has Shinji say, "最低だ、俺って。" or "Saitte da, orette." or lit. "Is the lowest, I/me." (ie "I'm the lowest.") ----------------- In the 2002 Manga Entertainment release, Shinji's Japanese dialogue subtitle, and his line in English, says, "I'm so fraked up." ----------------- In the 2019 Netflix stream, Shinji's English line, and both dialogue subtitles, says, "I'm the lowest of the low." ----------------- The Netflix dub is a much more direct, literal translation, but some have argued (correctly, I think) that the 2002 dub does a better job of conveying, in English, the same sentiment as the Japanese dub. That expression, and its line delivery, more fully expresses the depths to which the character has fallen, and how thoroughly disgusted he is with himself. Similarly, later in the movie, Shinji and Misato have an exchange that goes, in the Japanese dub, something like Shinji: "But Misato, you're a stranger ("他人 / tanin," lit. "other person/people"), you don't understand/know anything about me." Misato: "What does it matter if I am?" The 2019 dub sticks as closely as it can to the original, including using the phrase "you're a stranger," which doesn't have the same connotation in English as in Japanese. It's something of an insult in Japanese to call someone close to you a stranger; the inference is that a stranger is someone who doesn't know you, who doesn't understand you. In English, "stranger" either simply means someone you pass on the street or refers to a person with ambiguously-sinister intent. Getting the same sentiment across as the Japanese equivalent is much more straight forward: "You don't know me." The crux of what Shinji/Misato are saying is, "You don't understand what it's like being me." and "That doesn't matter," respectively. The 2002 dub gets closer to capturing this essence: S: "But you're not me. You don't know what I have to go through! You don't understand!" M: "So (frakking) what if I'm not you!?" Nothing about "stranger" this, "stranger" that.- 998 replies

Going through the front page of the subreddit, I can confidently say I'll just stick to my DVDs and manga, thanks very much. (I should really get the omnibuses. Mine are really showing their age...) Cool for the influx of new fans.- 998 replies

Neon Genesis EVANGELION General Thread
kajnrig replied to no3Ljm's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Episode 1 is a case of the English and Japanese titles being nearly identical. In Japanese, " 使徒、襲来 " (Shito Shurai, or "Apostle Attack"). In English, "Angel Attack". Oh by all means, vent. This quirk of the original Japanese directorial decisions doesn't say anything at all about the quality or lack thereof of the Italian dub. I feel for you, sounds like you're having to suffer through hack job fansubs (and/or worse yet, fandubs) in an official product.- 998 replies

Neon Genesis EVANGELION General Thread
kajnrig replied to no3Ljm's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, to be fair, the Japanese word used in-show, "shito," literally means "apostle," not "angel." (Compare the opening theme, "Cruel Angel's Thesis," aka "Zankoku no Tenshi no Teze".) https://wiki.evageeks.org/Angels#Translation Eva does this dual-title thing a lot. Individual episodes have separate Japanese and English names, too.- 998 replies

Apparently like the other AoZ MGs this is based on the Mk. II 2.0 (and is fully complete instead of a conversion kit as some speculation had suggested), so if you were wanting a Quel 2.0, this is likely the only way you get it. hurraaayyyy

Aside from Yutaka Izubuchi (the mecha designer) doing some supplemental designs for DYRL, I don't think there's any direct connection. But he's from the same era that spawned Kawamori, and I'm sure ideas were traded back and forth between the two and others. Even if not, there's only so far you can take chobham armor without things starting to look alike. I've asked about UNT Spacy before, too, and from what I remember, "UNT Spacy" was basically superseded by "EFF"/"EFSF"/"EFGF" in the late 90s for... reasons. Probably wanted something they could more easily trademark/copyright/etc. Macross went through something similar with its "UN Spacy" changing to the "NUNS" (New UN Spacy, how very creative) name and new logo, though in that case I suspect they had additional incentive given the whole Harmony Gold Robotech mess.

Hey everyone. Been a while since I followed this thread. I got curious to ask if NY or anyone is still drip-feeding their VF-31A Kairos orders, or if that's been over and done with for a while now?

Directed by perennial Resident Evil director Paul Anderson IIRC, hence why it stars his wife Mila Jovovich. Last I heard it was going to be a Gate-style story where a portal opens up and MH monsters start pouring through. The main characters are a modern military outfit who find their weapons ineffective and learn to fashion weapons from the monsters themselves in order to fight them. As a premise, it's better than it could be... is probably the most positive spin I can put on it.

Actually, for all the problems that movie has, I do kind of love it expressly because of its similarities to M+. Its heart is in the right place, it just was never going to be able to execute as successfully as M+.

Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
kajnrig replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
Just wanted to post because I didn't notice until now. During the final Isamu/Guld fight in M+, the YF-19 loses not just its gunpod but its head laser as well. It also doesn't just lose its gunpod. The gunpod is struck by a projectile and breaks in half. A closer-up of the broken head laser. This close I'm not sure how I missed it the first time. And while the gunpod magically re-appears later on... ...the head laser never does. At first I thought this was an animation error showing it on the bottom of the YF a la the original VF-1... ...but on closer inspection it's just the other wing. -
Is this the small F-16-sized stealth fighter with the 3D thrust vector nozzles that Japan developed? The... ATD-0, I think?

Do they still have rights to Mospeada and Southern Cross? I'm 95% sure that's a no, but if they do I don't see why they don't just cut their losses and start over with what they have left... which, given, isn't a lot, but it's still more substantial than what passes for Robotech original content.
