Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
kajnrig replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Saw this the other day. It's a bit wishy-washy until it finally starts digging into the movies themselves, but I found it interesting nonetheless. The clickbait-y title is kind of gross, but eh.- 751 replies

Hey, I remember those guys. Didn't you use the Victory decals for those builds? I thought the red rings were decals...

Ghost in the Shell Live Action - March 31, 2017
kajnrig replied to Mechinyun's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
According to http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=ghostintheshell2017.htm Worldwide gross: $166 million They put the production budget at $110 million, but some firms estimate closer to $180 million. Plus the marketing (which never has numbers, but people usually guesstimate to be around the same as production), and this film either just barely broke even ($110m production, $50-60m marketing) or lost anywhere from $14-194 million ($180 production, $0-180 marketing). There were news articles (such as this one: http://deadline.com/2017/04/ghost-in-the-shell-scarlett-johansson-box-office-flop-whitewash-1202061479/ ) saying that it was a $60 million flop. It's known that I didn't care for this film from the beginning, and while my feelings on it have mellowed now that it's come and gone, after watching the various anime incarnations and re-reading the manga, I keep asking myself, "Why couldn't they have just done this?" There were plenty of episodes in SAC that could have been translated to screen outright, the Tachikoma-centric ones especially. I've only gotten 3/7 through Arise and even though I have my issues with it, it still has more interesting characters and does a better job exploring a better backstory for the Major. That's not to say that these adaptations deserve to be held up on pedestals, but they're simply well-made and well-told, which is more than can be said of this movie.- 751 replies

Yeah, the Unicorn MG has quite a lot of decals, but that's owing mostly to it being a Katoki design. The HGUC also has a waterslide decal sheet available as well. The animation doesn't bother with the markings, of course, which is strange because they used CGI models and slapping on some marking textures couldn't possibly have been very hard. For my part I never bother to use them; I find them more distracting than "realistic."

If they were smart they'd do a HGUC and release the RG Unicorn and Destroy modes separately. I mean if they were smart they would just leave the HGUCs well enough alone, but since they HAVE to do an RG...

The books were better-written than this. Certainly less hammy. I feel no qualms skipping this.

I snapped together the Ba last night and came out with some minor notes: - The circular pieces (H5 and H6) that go onto the swiveling shoulder joints and which the arms then plug into, I couldn't get them to fit in without being crooked for the longest time. After a while I managed to get them to fit, but it was a chore. - The kit still has unsightly gaps and misaligned pieces, but that's just part and parcel to being a transformable kit. I've grudgingly accepted that as the trade-off. I just got the Hasegawa Ba as well, so it'll be fun to see them side by side.

Huh. That underside shot, plus the display stand, is starting to sell me on the kit... Damn it.

If it's down to that, you're likely only going to have 'til Thursday to catch it. I was lucky enough to catch Your Name the week before it was removed from the theater's lineup.- 751 replies

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
kajnrig replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It hardly fits, but the term "space opera" made me immediately think of Lost Universe. (And Macross, of course.) Think Slayers but in space. -
They've said they won't be... eventually. But yeah, friend codes galore for now. Like wtf.

On the same page No3Ljm linked to is the model kit itself plus the add-on equipment kit (which provide the missile launchers). Just FYI, you won't be getting all that dakka with just the base kit.

Yeah, I'm not sure what else he could do with Gerwalk myself, but the whole engines swinging down to form the legs thing does get kind of samey after a while. Iconic, but also samey. But also iconic. Ehhhhhh...... The YF-21/VF-22 put a sort of interesting spin on Gerwalk, but I can't help but feel like it was a cheat of sorts. It doesn't so much "transform" into Gerwalk as simply open up the bays covering its limbs and let them fall out. People were talking about the Draken Gerwalk possibly being one- or four-legged, or taking on a dragon mode in the vein of Escaflowne... So I don't think the creativity pool is empty just yet. Maybe another twin-engine fighter could have the engines form into shoulders instead of the legs, similar to the VF-4G's upper fuselage. I remember there being talk about maybe the Draken only having fighter and Gerwalk modes, no battroid. That'd be interesting, and would allow Kawamori to tailor the transformation to fit. But I mean Gerwalk is still a favorite of mine regardless of the VF. Like others have said, it's what makes a VF a VF and Macross Macross. So... I dunno. Just spitballing.

What a coincidence. I just received my Ba in the mail as well. Can't wait to get back home and open it up, subpar decal quality be damned.

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!

Oh, nice. I'd been hoping for this. I like the increased horsepower of the new 3DS, but I prefer the ergonomics of the 2DS. Shame there's no regular-sized version, but I'll take what I can get. Argh, now just to get a copy of Xenoblade... And all the 3DS Zeldas... And a Switch... And BotW... And hoo boy, suddenly I have no more money again. EDIT: Actually, having actually taken a look at the video, I'm disappointed it isn't the same single-plane device like the original 2DS. I suppose the XL size sort of makes it a bit less cumbersome, but I still would have liked a regular New 2DS without the folding screen.- 6837 replies

I'd love to see Kawamori rethink Gerwalk for the next series. I remember we were talking about it with the Draken III before its full transformation was revealed. It's not to say that "traditional" Gerwalk looks bad - I love it - but it would just be nice for a different third mode.

Yep, Nintendo published it, which means unless they experience a rare bout of generosity, that game will remain locked to Nintendo consoles. Hopefully it'll at least see its way to the Switch. I'm thinking I might finally get one with my tax refund.- 6837 replies

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
kajnrig replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
No, not at all. The games were designed for arcades, thus simple controls. ZoE, on the other hand, is unique; I've modified other games to control more like it, but nothing came "pre-baked" with ZoE controls. As far as similar-feeling mech games... Strike Suit Zero and Strike Suit Infinity come to mind. One is the story game, the other is the arcade/survival game. It's more Macross than ZoE, with transforming space plane mecha, but that's another game where I modified the mecha controls to play more like ZoE and the flight controls to be more like Ace Combat. I remember it being fun, even if it didn't strike either of those itches perfectly. --- From what I remember of the Gundam Vs series (using a Playstation pad): - Square for main weapon - Triangle for melee - X for jump (double-press(+hold) to dive when in the air in later games, I think) - Circle for... target lock-on? - Left Stick/D-pad for movement, double-press(+hold) to boost in that direction - Shoulder buttons were used as button combinations for special commands like manual reload (Ground Gundam/GM's machine gun) or secondary weapon fire (Gundam's head vulcans) until the introduction of assist characters, then one was dedicated to summoning them. - I think you can enter a sort of boost mode with a specific button combination, but I haven't played a Vs game since the PSP one so I can't confirm. EDIT: Oh, also my own thing, I just bought Bayonetta on PC. Finally gonna give that game a shot, can't wait. Now if only Sega/Platinum would port Vanquish and Anarchy Reigns over to PC, too...- 6837 replies

Fed vs Zeon was such a good game. That space battle music, though, shudder. BaWEEEEEEEEE.... BaWEEEEEEEEE, baWEEEEEEEEE, baWEEEEEEEEE, baWEEEEEEEEE, baWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. When I started playing it emulated on PC, I actually went to the trouble of ripping out the music files and replacing that track with something actually bearable.- 6837 replies

It's made or headed by someone who started out as a fan creator, who (I think) did a fan remake or some such thing of Sonic that was very well-received, especially compared with whoever made Sonic 4. I'm not too sure on the ins and outs, but the important thing is that this game is supposed to be 2D only, and people think it looks really good. Me, I've never been a big Sonic fan anyhow, so I'll leave it up to those who are to judge it. I think the same individual is also working on a 3D Sonic game as well.

It seems so, at least from scouring the instruction pics. The Strike parts don't have anything to do with the hip joints, so you can build a "naked" VF-1S battroid, complete with the new hip joints and lacking the Super/Strike parts, using the Strike kit. You'll just have to veer away from the instruction sheet at... four?... points: - Step 3: Put parts F19 and F21 on the forearm slots (covering the mounting points for the arm missile launchers) - Step 13: Skip this step - Step 14: Use part D2 instead of the Step 13 assembly when constructing the backpack (leaving no mounting points for the Strike/Super packs) - Step 23: Put part F16 on the gaps on the back of the forelegs (covering the mounting points for the leg verniers/fuel tanks) I hope I'm correct with that assessment. Best of luck. EDIT: In case you want to check the instructions for yourself: VF-1A/J/S "Naked" Battroid - http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10025791 VF-1S Strike Battroid - http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10031212

If you mean "do the Super/Strike Battroid kits still have both Q parts (new hips) and C parts (old hips)?" then yes. (I have a -1A Super Battroid bought last year or so and can confirm the parts.) If you mean "did they replace the C parts (old hips) with Q parts (new hips) in the new releases of the A/J/S Battroid kit?" then... I don't know. I would imagine not. If you mean "are the new hips still better than the old one?" then I also don't know. I would imagine yes.

First Class, Deadpool, and Logan all had to fight their own studio in order to be made at their level of quality. They're only as good as they are because dedicated, talented individuals manhandled the studio execs (Matthew Vaughn, Reynolds, and Jackman/Stewart). DoFP was a return to the old way of doing things, and Apocalypse was the second Last Stand because of it. I have no hope whatsoever for this movie.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
kajnrig replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Just got back from seeing my first anime in theaters, Your Name. It's always hard for me to recommend Makoto Shinkai's works, because he's never really mastered storytelling the way other anime directors have (Satoshi Kon, Miyazaki, etc.), but he's also a wholly different breed from them, and the same can be said of his films. I'm always drawn to his movies, even though or maybe because they focus on themes of life and living that I don't normally search for. If you watch his 5-minute short film "She and Her Cat" and enjoy it, you'll probably enjoy a lot of his other stuff as well. Link to an actually not half-bad English fandub: -
I thought this was a kitbash of a VF-11 and a VE-1, or maybe a custom job. I didn't realize Hasegawa came out with a VE-11 kit. Great job. Did you have to add the micromissile launchers, or did those come with the kit? (Also, wouldn't it not have weapons at all, being a VE and all? If I remember correctly, the VE-1 had custom Super Packs lacking missile launchers and a non-combat gunpod. Though the RVF-25 had its full complement of weapons, so eh...)
