The computer and electronics super geek thread

RTX 5060Ti Super Duper OK, I laughed at that harder than I should have. Street fighter vibes. On another note - my pops wanted to update mobo/cpu/ram on top of his other Christmas updates. Everything was fine, posted, started the update process. Temps running fine 7700x between 38-41, 70 while updating. Noticed some sluggishness that I thought was odd, but not alarming. Updates complete, including a bios update, shut down, plug in RGBs to mobo header, dead. Everything fires up, no post, solid red on the CPU LED. Toubleshoot everything, clear CMOS, no dice. Ping Microcenter, explain what went down, they just said bring the whole combo back and they'd give me a new one. Those guys are awesome. Dude was like we could do a diagnostic for a fee to figure out what went wrong, but with all the possible things I'd just do the exchange. I built two similar PC's for Christmas for folks and both worked fine. I thought they were the easiest builds ever. My disdain for RGB makes me think something went sideways with that. RGB is the devil... At the same time, that sluggishness was odd, too. Who knows. I wonder if this happens more often than I realize - the dude's tone was alot of "here we go again." -

Just read through a bunch of reviews. The 9700xt is pretty awesome at its price point, but my 7900xt is too close... Maybe if Microcenter lets me trade up at a good rate, but not expecting that. Good showing by AMD, but like some have said - who is the 9700 for in this lineup? -

Just read that separate testing is showing disparaging raytracing results even with the improvements with the 9070 series. Maybe this is the mid-step generational improvement we used to see before and the generation after this will be where we see real gains. For now, the 7900xt is holding up well. Playing Monster Hunter Wilds just fine - although I think there's a memory leak somewhere. -

On the RT point... my 7900xt does well enough. In Avowed with raytracing on it runs fine at 4k ultra and naturally better at 1440p. Just finished it - great game. If you're chasing absolute framerates, yeah go ham... Thunderdome for a 5090... I'm sure someone will figure out how to SLI them and achieve singularity. I think for practical purposes the 9700xt is more than capable. I do think that for the AI-based frame gen handheld PCs Nvidia is the better choice. They're doing pretty amazing things there, too. -

From what I've seen, the performance of my 7900xt, and the price point my expectation is we'll be pleasantly surprised. You're not going to see bleeding edge performance, but for resolutions up to 4k, in most cases, it'll be good enough for the mainstream gamer. -

If you're near a microcenter, their inland drives are solid, too. Most SSDs will offer cloning/migration software with them. Not all SSDs are built equal for speed. When I first got my PS5 it was clear - you may want at least one high-end SSD for quality of life. -

But... But... it's so FANCY! Gotta get all the RGB on it, too. Makes it go faster like the autoparts stickers on cars. I'm paying close attention to the rumor mill on the 9070xt. Pricing ranging from $479-620, performing at a level of a 7900xt, but with much stronger ray tracing. Would be a no-brainer sidegrade for me if it's true. $479 is a pipe dream, but if AMD does that it'll be like Sony throwing the PS1 gauntlet at the Sega Saturn. We'll see. -

Ordered a set of Viture Pro XRs for travel that arrived yesterday. I am blown away by what they can do. The picture is spectacular - I'm not quite the right fit for the included nose fittings and I don't want to bend size 4 into oblivion so I ordered some adhesive pads to get me the .4-.6 I need to fit them just right. Plug and play for my ROG Ally X, laptop, cell phone... so far checks the box for all my use cases. Watched Macross Plus, played Path of Exile 2 for a couple of hours on them, and putzed around in windows and dex... Only thing I think I'd prefer to do on a regular screen right now would be work and school stuff. It handles productivity software just fine, but it does cause straining. Software is janky, but treating them like an external monitor is simple enough. Right now my corners are just a tiny bit blurry because they don't fit precisely right, but once the pads come in they'll be perfect. These will help on some long flights coming up. Excited to play the PC versions of the FF7 remake on them. -

I know we've talked a bit about Nvidia, but the AMD rumor mill suggests their mid-range card is performing better than expected and the price point is solid there, too. I picked up a 7900xt because of the ram, raster performance, and I got a killer price on it from Microcenter. I can personally confirm the card is phenomenal in all of my resolutions and works wonderful in the EGPU. If the rumors hold true on the new AMD card I may use their trade-up program. Eager to see real benchmarks done by some of the more ruthless and critical forums. -

Coolest thing I've seen of the new stuff are the watercolors with the LCDs built right into the block. Same with fans. When I overclocked my PCs I would run all the stats for monitoring to my logitech device screens whether on my KB or G13 so I could monitor health. Now I could put all the stats on the fan and cooler displays. OCing used to be an art/science. Now you push button like on the 186dx and OC, lol. I think those LCDs have utility. RGB stuff is kinda dumb unless you can make a cooler look like warp coils. -

I've been trying to get better educated on the frame gen bit and I will say aside from micro artifacts and some shenanigans, frame generation is pretty amazing. However it's still sleight of hand software magic to me. There was a video posted about a year ago where a reviewer extracted all the frame gen frames and put the side by side actual frames in a spider man game and it makes a compelling argument for the AI generated frames. I watched another video of someone streaming the new Indiana Jones game on a 16 gig card. About 10 minutes in frames tanked to 20 or less. The cause was the card running out of VRAM. No need to run around with hair on fire yet, because the reviewer failed to turn off the highest quality texture setting when transitioning from a lower resolution test to a higher one. However, it lends strength to 16 gigs just not being enough especially if you want the best textures and highest refresh rate. In computer terms I'm a generational dinosaur although I can still build with the best today :P. My son's Christmas upgrade is just obnoxiously fast and at a budget. My other twin son's EGPU upgrade built off the remnants of his brother's old PC is spectacular, too. We scored an LG 34" 144hz monitor for 200 bucks (down from 500) at microcenter for him, too. One of the best PC deals in a while there. Anyways, his Ally X + rx6700 hand-me down has Space Marine 2 running maxed out on his new monitor. I'm old man rambling... Which brings me back to my criticism of frame gen... Maybe I'm just sitting in my rocking chair on the porch griping about the "good old days," while not giving this new tech a fair shake. I kinda wish we were back in the ATI 9700/9800 pro era. That was such a good time... When I saw AMD adopted a 9000-series number for what feels like a least breath GPU release something twisted a little inside :(. -

Yup, this is why I'm not a fan of this push into frame generation - this should be a value feature or for specific applications that can benefit from it. If you're dropping two grand or more (these prices are pre-tariff I imagine) then you should get that kind of performance. I think Nvidia is just making up for the 1080ti awesomeness. That was an awesome crazy value. -

5070ti looks like the sweet spot. We'll see what partners do with it. I think this is an underwhelming release because the focus wasn't on raw performance increase, but frame generation magic. I don't think it really matters how they get there though so long as the performance is seen by the user. Only the high-end processors for the handheld market are real evolutions. We're going to see alot of frame gen shenanigans there, but expecting that for handhelds. I'm paying attention to what the Switch 2 is doing with DLSS. I think the bump in performance for the handheld PCs is most relevant, especially with Thunderbolt 5. My Ally X + EGPU has just gotten better and better with driver updates. -
Thanks man! I have a pretty severe backlog, so it may be a while. I also want to tweak the color pallette to better fit the concept design for the R-104 White Requiem from Final 2. It never made it in-game, but the original concept had a different tone of white with whispy features like a wedding dress or maybe even an angel? I think this metal heart is an awesome base for the White Requiem.

OK. I'm going to build this.

Shmup tribute shelf is complete in its current stage - waiting for premium models of Raiden, Ikaruga, Raystorm, and a few more niche ones that will likely never be releases aside from Gacha Ball models and I can't seem to find those. Maybe I'll build them with Legos like my Endymion (too big to fit with these, so bonus pic of him on a separate shelf.

In Crocodile Dundee voice @ all prior VF weapons... "That's not a Gunpod... THIS is a Gunpod." It's giving me Aliens smart gun + A10 Warthog gatling gun vibes.
