Hirano is a vet. Check out some of his other stuff like Dangaioh. The great Kawamori did the mecha design!

Tbh, MZ23 isn't terrific lol. Watch some ghibli magic if you haven't yet. Mononoke Hime or Howl's Moving Castle may be a good place to ease into it.

That was pt 2; the red-headed stepchild of the trilogy. The tone is much more serious. Pt 3 is a return to 90s anime with kitazume art.

Yeah, I believe that one sold for around 7K. The cel was close to identical. I bet it's the same buyer who bought it (maybe begrudgingly) since this one had the background. The bg really does complete it though.

Based on the other image provided, it looks like it's "マイ アニメ" (My Anime) magazine - 05/May issue... assuming 1983. Illustrated by Hirano and his wife Kakinouchi. Both key animators to macross!
