I don't see any other way besides the comic books that Robotech could be a gateway to anime. Robotech itself didn't and still doesn't today make people want to be anime fans. Exposure to other anime and manga can. The way it happened for me is I saw an ad for the Comico comics in the end credits. Then I went to the comic book store to buy some. I got my Robotech Masters comics and saw that Dirty Pair and Urusei Yatsura were in a similar art style. Then I found out about anime through the letters pages in those comics and in Protoculture Addicts. Protoculture Addicts was a Robotech fanzine but there was Anime-Zine and Animag too. Eventually you'd find out about anime from Robotech characters having big eyes but you had to do some pretty deep investigating. In some areas, getting anime tapes was like getting a bag of weed. It was like I know this guy that can copy these for you if you give me your tapes.

Only in the comic. On the tape you can hear them him say Rick Yamada. It was considered an easy to pronounce common Japanese name like Smith. Anyone remember if Robotech fans were accepted by anime fans in the 80s? I saw Robotech and Harlock in 1988. When I finally met other anime fans in the early 90s, I remember people having a few Robotech tapes, but everyone was hostile towards Robotech and considered it to be very old. In 1993, more than one person told me that Robotech was ancient and looked like poo. They were saying that in the western anime magazines too. Who were these people that were supposedly influenced by Robotech? US Renditions? US Manga Corps? AnimEigo? I'm not arguing. I just want to know if anyone else remembers.

Macross Frontier Movie 1,YES it is subbed now edition
Legioss replied to sharky's topic in Movies and TV Series
I still have all the Central Anime tapes. God I want to see this movie. It makes me want to blow a ton of money I'm supposed to spend on school and go to Nihon just to see it. 私の日本語はまだ上手じゃありませんが。My Japanese is not yet skilled. It would be like confronting Vader too soon. I'd get my hand chopped off. The soundtrack for this is awesome. I've heard Pink Monsoon a million times and have never seen the movie. -
You want to make a reference for that? Okay. If I were intent on making such a thing (not that I would), I'd just briefly summarize the series, comics, and Shadow Chronicles so it seems like it all fits together. That's Tommy's Robotech. Don't think about it more than he did. You're basically writing your own Robotech fanfic by putting together the Infopedia (or whatever you're using) and the comics. Am I right that this is for Robotech.com types?
-
There's nothing to make a reference for except twisted versions of the original shows. Robotech is about Zor, the first Robotech Master, and his invention Robotechnology (which uses protoculture), and the consequences of that. We know very little about Zor. His clone's onscreen, but not him. Harmony Gold isn't helpful at all with clarifying the events in his life described in the series. The Zentraedi rebelled against the Masters 500,000 years ago. Why are they working as mercenaries of the Masters? We'll never know. Who are the Disciples of Zor and why are they at war with the Masters? We'll never know. What happened to the Masters empire? We'll never know, because there never was one. Without the whole point of the story, it's nothing but a bad dub of Mospeada.

Combining Macek with Tommy's pictures makes one man with all their experiences. That's epic. 20 years later they'll still be talking about it and how he ingeniously thought up this idea to improve the original guy, the raw material, by sweetening and adapting him to make him more suitable to a wider audience.
-
Well, Tommy had to come up with a picture of Rick and Lisa fast and you know it takes him a year to draw a uniform with a head on it. Those arms might be a problem without a knowledge of anatomy. It costs a lot too. They have to pay Tommy for each pencil stroke. It would be asking too much to have a monthly updated webcomic for members to read and enjoy Robotech while waiting for the next movie. Again though that requires artists and only Macross has that.

It looked to me like he was comforting her and then she's thinking that he's the one not doing alright and needs comforting and he's compensating for it. Maybe I didn't understand the scene.

I went to his panels and bought stuff from him at Robocon 10, and I've read interviews and seen videos of him throughout the last 22 years I've been into Robotech and Macross. It was always interesting to hear about his experience in the industry and his ideas for Robotech, even if he wasn't always truthful. In my opinion it's not a good sign for Robotech that his input is no longer available. Robotech will suck even more. Maybe someday someone will make it entertaining again. I used to idolize Carl Macek. I genuinely thought he was a creative genius. If this was like 18-19 years ago I would have been extremely sad over it. Today it makes me feel bad for some reason anyway. I have to comment on this and not be excluded.

When did you first realise how cool Macross is??
Legioss replied to taksraven's topic in Movies and TV Series
I was a Robotech fan since 1988 or something like that. In 1991 or 1992 there was an ad for Macross II in my Books Nippan catalog. So I ordered II when they dubbed it and I saw Macross II and Plus when they came out. I'd seen DYRL and thought it was okay. I liked them but not as much as Robotech, purely for the story. I didn't understand how cool the story of Macross was. Plus didn't really shed any light on what the whole thing was about at least for me. I'd seen the Macross episodes on the Robotech Perfect Collection tapes and they seemed kind of sedate in comparison. I didn't appreciate them. When 7 came out, somebody showed me a tape of it without subtitles. My Nihongo understanding was so little then that for some reason I couldn't appreciate Basara's music and I didn't understand that story. Maybe I heard Planet Dance or something and couldn't make sense of it, even though I already liked Japanese music before that. I remember thinking it was like bad country music. Also I didn't like newer character designs. I thought they didn't look 80s enough, so I'd purposely try to ignore shows like Bubblegum Crisis and Tenchi Muyou even though I'd seen some of them. I had put Macross 7 in that category. Somehow I got it in my head that Macross 7 was forgettable until I could watch it with subtitles. I also had this stupid belief that Robotech's unanimated backstory made it better, Robotech's potential that HG is always claiming but that they never deliver on. It wasn't until like 2004 or 2005 I got a complete set of Macross 7 fansub tapes. I finally understood Macross. Zero was announced and came out and it was great. If you had seen 7 it ruled. It was when Macross 7 made me excited and sad, when I loved the characters and started to understand spiritia. In a way Basara reached me, broke through the confusion, and made me understand. I really should have worked harder to track down those tapes. It would have saved me a lot of time and money. Macross 7 made it clear who actually makes Macross. It's not a bunch of guys in Hollywood. -
If there was a live concert who would you see? *poll*
Legioss replied to Vepariga's topic in Movies and TV Series
Sheryl because I like her a little more than Fire Bomber almost to where she's equal with them. Her show is creative and exciting. I like Planet Dance but I'd rather listen to something like What Bout My Star. -

Macross Frontier Episode 1 Talkback Thread *READ 1st Post*
Legioss replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
I'd love to watch this, and I already got it, but not on my computer. I'll have to wait for a lower resolution/bitrate version that likes XBMC, preferably a "raw" since 日本語ができる。 Yes, I already checked the links in the first post and it's not out yet. Looks awesome. I'm tempted to just check out this eyecatch instead of watching it all the way through. -
In those pictures are some of those Atelier Sai and others new, cheaply shaped and painted, hardsuits with different colors? I don't understand. You get a hardsuit and a matching motoslave in the package?

This should be in a drawing book to demonstrate to beginning artists what your characters and mecha will look like with no line of action. -
How many times have you watched episode one of Frontier?

Looks cheap. No rubber wheels. It should be $60. I only understand why it's so expensive comparing it to how much Linna cost.

It would be nice if he got some information on the Motoslave. I just ordered a Atelier-Sai Linna on HLJ. Priss or Nene is next, there or the auctions. If I can't get Priss, at least I could have a Motoslave with Priss.

I have a Jetfire, a red Joons, a bootleg "Bandai" 1990 (Yellow VF-1S on package, blue fast packs and a strike inside), and a Bandai reissue VF-1S. They're awesome. I keep Jetfire out with the blue armor on since it's loose and doesn't have the red armor. The blue armor fits Jetfire perfectly.

I saw this while searching for something else and thought I'd mention that I'm selling mine for $10 a doll. That's free shipping in USA but I can work out cheap deals for other countries so I make a few $ off them. I don't really care how much they're worth. I'm just trying to liquidate them to buy stuff I want. http://p081.ezboard.com/frdfhqcommunicatio...icID=1124.topic -
