Agreed, and maybe I'm in the minority but the only thing that bothered me about Mass Effect's inventory system was the inability to sort in more logical fashion. I liked the high level cap, large amount of skills, numerous weapon and armor choices, etc. I spent nearly 200 hours with Shepard in ME, collecting the best weapons and armor, completing insanity with the best gear and all the choices exactly how I wanted them. I'll do that for ME2...I'm just not sure it will be as enjoyable.

While I really do love this game, I honestly don't understand some of the random crap they did. Like the streamlined weapon system, there's like...2-4 guns per class...and that's it and you can't even acquire the best in slot item for every weapon (or the class specific ones). You can only pick one item on the collector ship per ME2 Shepard...regardless of difficulty, so my whole hardcore prep for insanity was almost entirely a waste. It also bugs me that you cant hide helmets like in ME. But more than any little issue I have, I hate the random renegade (and presumably paragon) points you just get arbitrarily thrown at you regardless of the choices you make. I really love this game, but not being able to craft my "perfect" vision of Shepard like I did in ME is borderline infuriating.

Well my tag for the game in live is the same as beta, Kastigar@Kastigar. Might be on as ME2 is working my last nerve right now.

Well I wasn't going to be playing this today seeing as how ME2 hit. But my 360 died completely this afternoon, so I logged into ST:O. There is some pretty cool little end of beta stuff going on. Spacedock is flooded with borg which is kinda neat. I didn't see any cubes assaulting from outside, but I might have missed them. I might be playing early start if I can't find a solution to my 360 dilemma.

It's worlds apart from EVE, save the fact it's in space, you have ships and they shoot each other. EVE is incredibly complex, from the economy to the crafting to the combat, hell even knowing every skill that effects your ships weapons can be a task. EVE is also extremely PVP focused. EVE is fun, but it has something akin to a learning cliff instead of a learning curve. STO is more story driven, more PVE based and features both ship based and human combat. Also, for the final hours of beta and/or live anyone of MW members looking for another forum member to fleet with, feel free to send me a message. You can find me at Kastigar@Kastigar in game.

You know I really didn't have trouble at all in my T1 cruiser, it's all about not biting off more than you can chew. I was really dying to get to T3, but since once beta is over it allll resets I held off. Really looking forward to T3 and up, especially Sovereign, I love that ship design.

My buddy was able to get his before launch, aside from work, he has just played ME2 since like last Thursday. He says it's amazing, but that's all he'll reveal. Oh and he did give me a 40ish hour time frame without finishing his first playthrough, so I'm stoked about that.
-
Wow, I go out of town for a few days and a bunch of people got on board. Looking forward to seeing many of you guys there for launch, or post ME2 amazingness.

I did a little digging on the Klingons, after you hit level 6 as a Federation player you get to make Klingon characters. So basically the game forces you through the tutorial and a handful of basic missions before you can make a Klingon. They apparently wont have much PvE or any ship customization (visually) out of the gate though, and that these things will be added over time. But if you don't mind hopping in a traditional Bird of Prey or Vor'cha to smoke some Feddies than go for it. I'm hoping Romulans become playable sometime down the line.

Video game company blunders
kaiotheforsaken replied to Wanzerfan's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The Mass Effect series would sort of counter that point. Not that I totally disagree, I don't even think a linear game is always a bad one. One of the best games, with on of the best stories I've played...possibly ever is Mass Effect, not particularly linear at all. Conversely, the other game that would fall into the amazing category would be Metal Gear Solid 4, which allowed very little wiggle room, outside where it took you. Both games are fantastic and have great stories, they just present them to you differently. Now I honestly dislike how Final Fantasy has been moving away from the free roam overworld of the older games. I do think they need to re-capture that and let you walk off the beaten path more than they have in more recent titles. -
It never really bothered me honestly. I think by and large Karpyshyn (the writer of the games/books) views Shepard as a male character, if memory serves, Shepard is even referred to as male in the post ME book. Yes Bioware does give the player a lot of freedom to move and shape the story, and to shape Shepard how they see fit. But it's safe to imagine that they sort of use "their version" for marketing and so forth.

Considering it is probably in the box with a shipping label to your house on it already...yeah probably. I think they say "we wont charge you until it's ready to ship". Well the likelihood is it's ready. I have a few friends that work at retail GS and they are expecting their in store shipments before the week is over. -
I was coming on to post the exact same thing. The UI is better, the map is better, the graphics are better, everything is enabled. It looks and plays smooth as silk. Color me impressed. And when I say the graphics are better I really mean it, in the previous build ATi cards had no anti aliasing support and were generally not running STO as smoothly as Nvidia cards. It's really nice to see this ironed out so I can crank out even more detail from the game. You also get nice voice over intros when entering new sectors strait from Leonard Nimoy, further explaining the conflict/story in a given area. I also love the attention to detail, traveled to DS9 and the wormhole was open, as I approached the station it went through a full closing animation, just like in the show.

Indeed, which is good since I was only about half a level from hitting it. Debating on going too much farther to have the reset button hit on the 26th. I definitely know I'm gonna play, it's just a question of if I can turn off ME2 at all in the next 3 months to actually play "at launch"

Yeah, doing just the main story missions will count for the achievement. You likely WONT get any of the "complete the majority of the game with X character" achievements that way, because there is so much side content. But simple hardcore and insanity playthroughs only require the primary story missions. There is also a new ME2 trailer out which is flat out amazing, but it does contain some slightly spoilerish or at least teaser scenes, so view with caution. It seriously almost brought forth man tears it was so glorious however.

I noticed the Klingons available after a few days...I think it was a patch vs a specific level. IF it was level it was between 9-11 which is pretty minimal. Oh and the new patch hit tonight, 800 megs almost. Looking forward to seeing some classic areas (like DS9) as well as the additional polish to the UI and so forth.

hardcore by itself...probably 7-8 if you just go strait story, skip convos and everything. Insane...maybe longer, that can get really tough. I wouldn't know about super short playthroughs though...I'm too much of a completionist.

I wouldn't base any judgment on the MMO genre on Galaxies, as it's widely regarded as well...a failure at this point. MMOs are actually by and large a good value. At the height of my wow playing it was all I really played game wise, thats only 15 bucks a month, versus the 60-180 dollars I might spend depending on the release month. It costs more to go to the movies and buy some twizzlers. -
Most gamestops still have tons of open beta codes for pre-orders. 5 bucks down gets you the code, if you hate it you go back to the store and get your money back. Course that really only helps if you have one near by. This next week will be where it's at for STO as they are upgrading/adding more server hardware and opening up the whole game.

Pretty neat little tidbit about ME2, not spoilery at all. You will be able to totally customize the look of your armor, everything from helms, shoulder pad design, camo pattern, material it's made out of and color. This will appear in all cutscenes and is applicable to any armor you acquire. So your Shepard will always look exactly like you want, while making the choices you want as well. Pretty freaking awesome if I do say so.
-
The references to older shows and the appearances of characters that you remember is pretty awesome Apparently they are lifting all the beta restrictions sometime this week as well, which will be pretty cool. Sadly I'm going out of town and come back right before ME2s launch, so I'll be a bit conflicted lol. In any case, I got to do a ground based fleet action last night. There was easily 50+ people on the map running around as a group completing objectives and there was almost no hickups or lag. It was a lot of fun and encouraging to see it run so well. I had to update...yesterday I guess it was and the away missions have been running much much better since.

Subscriptions are 14.99 a month, which is pretty standard MMO fare. The problem with Conan is that it has insane system requirements from the get go and was not very playable. Warhammer focuses almost entirely on PVP. Games that are one trick ponies tend to get old. Star Trek has a nice solid PVE side which can be played in small groups, large groups, or solo and some solid PVP from what I've been able to try. And both are completely viable ways to progress your character through the ranks. Single player also has some very nice story elements as well. I'd say take the plunge with STO, Cryptic has a solid track record for MMOs and there is a large enough fan base for Star Trek to keep things going. As long as Cryptic provides content for players, I think it'll stay healthy. That and, unlike wow, all the servers are tied together much like the districts of cities in Guild Wars, so even if the population dips in the future you still wont have a "dead server". If I had the cash on hand I'd be going lifetime as well, but Christmas + January birthdays means I'll probably pass.

My recommendation is just head down to gamestop and put down a 5 dollar pre-order, they'll hand you the little card with the beta code right there. Then, if you don't like the beta you can just cancel the pre-order and get your 5 bucks back. Or you can see if you can get a friend invite from someone on the board come retail. I know I have a collector's edition on pre-order as well. So if there is some 14-30 day friend trials, I'd be happy to share when I get them.
