All Things Video Games Thread: II

So I got my 3DS today, and while I'm still on the fence about launch titles, I love the improvements over the DS just in terms of user friendliness. The fact that the 3DS is compatible with far more network security settings is worth the cost alone. I don't have to swap my network to WEP or turn security off to get the damn thing to work. As for launch stuff, the only thing I'm even debating buying atm is Street Fighter. But it seems silly to buy it when I have super for 360 and a custom built fight stick. I'm not disouraged though, system launches almost always suck. If the really can get zelda out in June I'll be a happy camper. There is some great stuff planned for the system and I'm looking forward to its library expanding. -
Wasn't the citadel a huge mass relay? I thought sovereign was attempting to activate it to bring the reapers through. Seeing as its consistently the center of galactic life, it would make sense that it's their preferred entry point. I'm fairly certain that's it's function. Edit: Here we go, from the ME wiki and I believe covered by the Prothean beacon on Ilos "The station is actually an inactive mass relay leading to dark space, designed as an elaborate trap so the Reapers can wipe out the heart of galactic civilization and leadership in a single, devastating strike. " It also says in the same article that it was the biggest Mass Relay hub, or one of the biggest. So it would allow the Reapers to fan out in the most efficient manner as they moved through out the galaxy. So it makes perfect sense to have it and keep maintained.

I always thought of the Reapers as similar to the Borg. They show up and essentially assimilate anything biological or technological that will benefit them in some way, (after all, most ME modern tech is based of things the Reapers left for species to find) and they consume the rest (perhaps for a form of reproduction like the human reaper). Then they leave and wait for societies to advance to a point where they can be used again, they may even help along some species so as to keep the cycle at a constant interval.
-
I always took that as the Reapers seeing all other forms of life as inferior, and that other species are elevated when altered or consumed for Reaper use. Or, the Reapers are intending to utilize humans in much the way they did the Protheans, so the species is "saved" from the cosmic extinction in a sense.

I think Eugimon has been indoctrinated with a statement like that Listening Harbinger's speech at the end of the game (just found it on youtube again) sounds to me like the Reapers are the nastiest thing out there. Though a twist to make them not would be fairly epic, it would likely feel pretty shoe horned in since we've had no evidence of anything worse. On the indoctrination thing, it seems that Reapers as well as certain Reaper artifacts have the ability to do so. I imagine, however, that the artifacts are that spread indoctrination are designed for just that purpose. Because the relays are such an important part of galactic travel, it may not be in the Reapers best interest to indoctrinate everyone that goes though them. In theory anyway, it could severely stunt the development of a species if once they started using the relay they all became servants of Reapers (especially if there was no Reaper to give them specific orders). The Reapers also seem to like to keep a relatively low profile between arrivals. If the relays were obviously Reaper technology, people might catch on much quicker, or find clues or warnings left from past civilizations. The Relays and the Citadel, as the are now, serve a purpose and shape civilizations that find them a certain way. This alone may be all the Reapers require of those specific items. That's all just theory on my part, but it seems sensible. However, there is an even simpler explanation which is this: If the relays (and the citadel) were capable of indoctrinating all those who came in contact with them, Shepard (as well as every character we've met) would be a servant of the Reapers and we wouldn't have much of a story.

I think the events of ME1 probably give him enough cause to voice concerns about Reaper indoctrination, but your point is valid. While the events of the DLC could go the way Lynx suggests (which would make perfect sense) Bioware has also said they do not intend to penalize anyone who opts to not pay for them. So the question is, do they make the implications of the DLC small or non existent or do they just stick a canon choice in there and force people who didn't get the DLC to deal with it. While this newest DLC doesn't have much choice (or any really) do you subject players to the fallout of those events even if they didn't specifically play it.
-
That is very very true and despite all my nitpicking, I did enjoy the bow it puts on ME2. I'm really looking forward to the 3rd game and seeing everything come together in truly epic fashion.

Started playing this again about 2 months ago and decided to take the plunge with a Klingon character. I got him to max level, got him some nice gear and did the featured eps with him. That being said, the lack of Klingon content and the disregard for established canon as a whole made me cancel. I really hate some of the things Cryptic has done with/to established canon. I'm just glad that nothing but the shows and movies actually counts as canonical. The game has its moments, but overall I just can't justify paying for it once endgame is all that's left.

Wasn't too thrilled with the choices Shepard had in this one. I felt like, at least in terms of a Paragon solution, Bioware kinda just said, "well you can try but it aint gonna work". I'm going to play through it again just to make sure that my doing X or failing to do Y the first time through didn't mess with some of the outcomes. Edit: So I just replayed the DLC and there really is only one overall outcome. You can pickip some paragon or renegade points along the way, but the overall outcome is the same. I'm a bit concerned about how events in the DLC will play out over ME3, but Bioware has stated that that they wont penalize people for not buying DLC. So I'm hopeful the impact of certain things in this DLC is minor. In any case, it was still fun and I good way to tie up ME2. They could have made the DLC a post Collector Base mission and enriched the story a bit with more dialogue regarding your actions throughout the game, but it is what it is.
-
I'm a bit disappointed with the solo mission thing just because it likely wont include any new dialogue for crew members. Granted (With the exception of combat) all the other DLC stuff was basically solo, your teammates didn't exactly chime in to events going on. And I mean, Shepard could easily utilize all assets at his disposal. If you take the Paragon route with the game, you basically give the Illusive Man the finger (as does your crew who are allied with Cerb). There are no more Cerberus assets (in terms of the Normandy and her crew) in that outcome, there are only Shepard assets.

I really hope ME3 doesn't suffer from similar issues. While I have a great deal of respect for Bioware and I enjoy their games, I worry that they are churning out sequels so rapidly. If they crank em out much faster I'd be willing to bet EA is looking to run another money well dry, they have a tendency to bleed their franchises dry. That being said, I'm still on the fence about DA2. I'll probably wait to see if some form of DLC allows for new game plus or some kind of Mass Effect style replay system. IMO RPGs either need this feature and/or the ability to roam around post storyline, especially if DLC is essentially assured. -

My girlfriend got me one (or the paid off preorder for one) as a bday gift earlier this month. I might pick up street fighter or something for launch, but it's really the future titles like zelda, star fox, metal gear, etc that i'm most pumped about. Until then i'll just keep busy with my current ds titles or spring for one or two launch games that should at least be fun. -
Just finished unboxing my Henkei Prime and I'm pretty floored. I know he's been out for a while, but I (for some reason) never picked up this mold and I'm so glad I finally did. He might be my favorite Prime figure to date (excluding MP Prime). Looking at my collection now, it's really awesome having so many classic characters represented especially Prime and Megatron, the later of which I had never owned a figure of ever.
-
I would've gone that route if I hadn't already bought the set with Thundercracker, Wheeljack, Kup and Scourge. It isn't my first choice, but it'll likely be the cheaper alternative as Warpath is the only new mold for this wave (I think anyways). That and my local stores have really awful selections most of the time. My Target has basically nothing current on the shelves, it's basically pegs full of Bumblebee, Skullgrin and one or two others.
-
Really looking forward to this new DLC. I'm hoping (probably pointlessly) that there will be some good, new, dialogue with the team over the impending Reaper threat. I'm especially wanting some new Legion tidbits, but I'd take any crew members having some additional lines this go around. In any case, I'm looking forward to see how much further this DLC progresses things.

55 for United Megatron is a good deal, especially when compared to Takara or even Hasbro's previous release of the mold. It's a solid opportunity for those who missed him entirely without getting the ebay shaft. That being said, I'm dreading the hunt for Warpath and what his ebay prices will look like. Edit: BBTS had more pre-orders open for Warpath by himself just after I posted this initially, so I just bit the bullet on their higher price. It's still likely to be cheaper than ebay or the gas I'll waste trying to find a store with him in stock.

I totally missed that link until today. That is exactly what I was looking for, thanks for the tip, pre-ordered.

Wheeljack being 40 is pretty nuts, he's not even the best figure of that bunch imo. I suppose he might be the most popular though, still that's just robbery, ebay probably has better prices. I'd like to see Hasbro reissue several of the older classics, especially Skywarp and Ramjet. Seems like the perfect time since it wasn't until recently you could complete those teams domestically. At least Takara has the right idea reissuing Megatron. Shoo, I'm not even sure Hasbro would need an orange/red tip. I ordered my Takara reissue from BBTS and they didn't alter the figure (though they did/do with MP Megatron).

I got a pretty awesome box from BBTS today, It had the set of 4 deluxe figures (Thundercracker, Scourge, Cup, Wheeljack) as well as the United re-issue of classics Megatron. Scourge is probably my favorite new mold out of the 4. There is almost no sign of a robot when he is in his jet/plane mode, and he pulls off some pretty neat tricks during transformation. Cup and Wheeljack are nice, but I'm not as floored by Cup as I thought I'd be (though he also does some really cool stuff during transformation). I would say the biggest surprise of the 4 is Thundercracker who just looks fantastic. He has a really nice blue plastic for his major coloring and his just is a great smooth silver paint app. He's probably the best looking seeker of the bunch (including the coneheads). I'm a bit late to the party in terms of this Megatron mold since I missed out on it originally, but I'm really impressed with him. Nice paint apps and an awesome homage to the original design. I'm glad I decided to shell out for him.

Faith leader would be Perfect, wonder if someone has just a gun for sale. Buying the whole figure when I don't really have much use for it seems kinda silly.
-
Does anyone know if there is (either on another figure or in a 3rd party set) a decent modern representation of Prime's iconic blaster? I have a Henkei Prime coming soon and I'd like to have him with a more traditional weapon.

He's talking about this: http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=BLZB10000&mode=retail Also, a couple nice shots of the new Warpath: http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/hires-images-of-generations-warpath/21019/ I was never a huge fan of the character, but I really like the figure. So I'll break down and get as it'd be the only (I think) classic character I haven't gotten in this line.
