Excited for this. Striking with the white/black with red accent motif, although the TIEs look odd with white panels. The AT-AT's look more like AT-TEs, only with 4 long legs instead of 6 stubbier legs. They should've left the AT-AT design alone; it's one of the best, most iconic mecha in film history. I wonder what George Lucas thinks of the new movie. It's kinda sad that he's been all but excluded from making inputs to the franchise he created, but he's also introduced the most unwanted/unnecessary changes to the OT and wrote/directed the deservedly maligned Prequels. I'm with Disney on giving Abrams final say. Lucas has an amazing imagination, though, so I do hope they can tap that well from time to time while he's still with us.

YF-21 or VF-22 variant, VF-14 Vampire (b/c who doesn't want an SR-71 inspired valk), VF-5000, and VF-9 Cutlass. All of these have been done in garage kit form by Experten. I'd love to see Bandai, with all their experience and resources, produce these as toys. And the Variable Glaug, b/c it's cool, and I want it in toy form.. The VF-1 has been done to death. All the above pose any number of engineering challenges, and I believe Bandai has the pedigree to realize these as practical transforming figures.

That was...chaotic and odd. Maybe it'd make more sense to me if I spoke the language. Shrugs. That Prime toy had so much potential if they'd just taken the engineering a bit further to make the cab and trailer work like the real thing, as they did with both Ultra Magnus figures. I've only bought 3 RiD figs, but compared to all my CHUGs, Prime, and Animated figures, these are a step back. I would expect Hasbro to throw more effort and finances into one of their flagship IPs to ensure a consistent quality product. Having handled a few, I get the opposite impression. Oh well, more money for LEGO, who continue to produce a high quality product, with constant additions and improvements. They've earned earned their place as the top toy producer.- 16711 replies

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread

I wasn't aware that Maketoys had a pending MP scale Megatron in the works. Interesting. I wonder if the guys at TT are biding time to see what kind of innovations these 3rd party folks can come up with to make a more proportionate Megatron. Apollyon is pretty well done, although I have to echo the above sentiment regarding the kibble on the interior leg. I thought it recessed more into the leg, but it doesn't. And it doesn't peg into anything...just held by friction. I also forgot to mention that after one transformation to gun and back, the rivet that holds the barrel is now very loose on mine. It doesn't help that the barrel is die-cast. Gravity is always on in my local area, making that particular concern worrisome whenever I'm compelled to handle him. None of these nitpicks make me regret getting him, though. He's a marvel of engineering, esp all the linkages required to get the arms in place. Those little linkages also make me grimace a bit, as little rivets in a couple spots are all that hold the arm assemblies. Too much force, and you're stuck with a parts-former. But enough negativity. He looks fantastic standing next to MP Soundwave and Prime; I need to acquire a Decepticon symbol for his chest, but otherwise, for all intents and purposes, he's the leader of my little Decepticon army until something better comes along. I also saw that Maketoys are working on an IDW inspired Bomber version of Megs. I'm happy with my official Deluxe, but I'm curious to see how this turns out. I like the idea of Megatron as an aircraft over his becoming a tank; both options are better than his becoming a handgun, but that G1 nostalgia still holds sway. Anyway, some of these third parties are really bringing some remarkable looking figures to the table; I'm feeling the temptation.- 9146 replies

I received my Apollyon today. He's a cool figure, but not without flaws. The shoulders are very limited, esp because of the hammer areas; I wish they could have found a way to make the shoulder socket extend out of the arm a little to increase its range of motion, but it is what it is. The shoulders on mine aren't floppy, but they're not real tight either. The hip areas on mine untab relatively easy, so I press on the hip skirts when I reposition the legs. In pistol mode, I had some gaps where the various sliding plates that form the handgrip didn't quite peg securely, and I had gaps where the black parts on the back of the arms mate up with the hip skirts ( the area that became Megatron's head on the G1 toy). Honestly though, nobody's buying this guy to keep him in pistol mode, and bot mode is where this figure shines. Arguably, this is the best looking G1 Megatron toy to date, and if TT do finally make an official version, this toy will be a challenge to beat. I'm glad I got him. I've also been eyeing X-Transbot's Cyclonus...so far, he looks amazing in both modes.- 9146 replies

Well, as for the race question for Johnny, the last trailer provides an answer, implying that Sue is most likely adopted. In this context, it's a non-issue for me. I just want them to be written/played in accordance with their established characters. So far, it looks like that's the case. Honestly, Doom's portrayal is the one that concerns me most. He was so poorly realized in the previous FF films; it's analogous to the Prequel's depiction of Anakin Skywalker. Dr. Doom is arguably one of Marvel's most intriguing and enduring bad guys, and for the sake of the film, I hope the writers did their research to better capture the character. From what I've seen in the trailers, the Four seem to be on the mark; Doom will be the deciding factor. Already, his mask looks odd to me...like it's not a mask at all. I hope that's not the final look for the character; I want to see a fully armored Doom wielding science and sorcery to the detriment of all who oppose him.

I'm also on the no more bugs bandwagon. Make the enemies human, or humanoid, with transforming fighters of their own. I liked that dynamic in Zero, and the SV-51 is still one of my favorite valks. And find a way to put the Variable Glaug in there, increasing its relevance sufficiently enough to warrant a toy.- 2715 replies

Although TT's Thundercracker looks better overall, I think I like Hasbro's blue better. But, the toy itself has too many flaws and begs for a redesign. If TT makes a new MP seeker, I hope they can find a way to have the chest intakes sit slightly higher than the head mount, and find a better solution to stowing the main gears, as well as making the mains more real-world accurate. A MP toy should depict both modes as accurately as possible, IMO. I went out on a toy hunt yesterday, mainly for LEGO, but I always cruise the TF aisle in the hopes of seeing something new. Other than some of the smaller RiD toys (Fixit) and the little transforming weapons for them, I didn't see anything new. I did see quite a few Silverbolts. I've been to TRU the last two weekends, and I didn't even see a shelf marker for Devastator, so I'm guessing they sold out as soon as they were put on the shelf, or they didn't get any stock. I did score the LEGO Mystery Machine though.- 16711 replies

Definitely proving more durable than the Arcadia; I've had mine in battroid with full packs holding a pose next to my Arcadia for about 3 weeks now, and the wings haven't drooped in the least. Very solid. My Arcadia's ankle joints are pretty loose, esp the right, so that's a huge detractor when your $300 toy is so precarious in a standing position. I love them both, but based on durability and overall engineering, I'd go with the Bandai. Just watched the M+ 4 part OVA. After 20 years, it's still phenomenally magical to watch, and it really makes me appreciate how well done these latest -19 toys are, esp if you look back at Yamato's old 1/72. It also drives home the necessity of a new improved -21 with more lineart proportionate battroid.

Weird. Not crazy about that. Heh, they can put an evil-looking face gazing out the windshield, but couldn't put little folding treads on the accessory tray. As homages go, I'd much prefer the latter. The TT Thundercracker looks good. I only have a few MP Seekers, all of them the Kawamori redesign. I actually prefer the original Takara design better, but at this point, as someone else mentioned, this mold has been well milked and I'm holding out for, hopefully, an improved design.- 16711 replies

I've only seen Megazone 23 once, and quite honestly, I vaguely remember it. I do like the Garland designs, though, so I hope this turns out better than the Yamato, which I never got. From all the criticisms I've read, probably a good thing. The Yamato guys who stayed with Arcadia have gained quite a bit more experience since then, and hopefully it'll be fully evident with this design. I hope so, b/c I'd like to have one. The Proto-Garland even more. I also hope they'll revisit the Moto-Slave, as I love how it looks. I also passed on Yamato's version. I guess I'm a rare breed, as I require no attachment to a series or movie to like and purchase mecha toys if I like the designs. To me, a cool toy has its own value apart from the media.

Those hands look funky, though. Why not use the regular MP hands that look good and can still open and close? Would've been nice if the side skirts rotated behind to cover the tires, but overall, he's a pretty good looking Ironhide. Definite buys, he and Ratchet. I wish these had a greater retail presence here in the States.- 16711 replies

I'm inclined to think Tracks' mold is better fitting to the female version. She looks great, but I've already ordered Tracks, and I'm happy with having one copy of that mold. I love the Fairlady mold, though; that Bluestreak is gorgeous, and mighty tempting.- 16711 replies

I was hoping by this stage in development the criticisms and feedback would have been acknowledged to make the final a better toy than the test shots. That doesn't seem to be the case, and there are too many things about the design that don't look right to make this an easy pass. I get what many of you are saying concerning the lack of M2 stuff out there, particularly the VF-2ss and its variants, and good sales of this may be the spark necessary to draw interest, but I know I wouldn't be satisfied with it the way it is now. Good luck to those of you who do get it; I hope it's the toy for which you've been waiting the last 22 years.

Wow, movie tie-in ads generally suck, but that Yakult one is just cringe-worthy. If my ears could gag... Saw Ant-Man today, and it had a similar light-hearted feel to it as Guardians, which was also one of the best MCU films. Enjoyed it greatly, although I'm sure anyone with a Ph.D in particle physics will tear it a new one. Agree with Mr. March on all his observations. Pena's stories, and how they filmed them, were great, esp the last one. Looking forward to more Ant-Man and company.

The premise of an aged Holmes, perhaps coming out of retirement, once again on the case, is interesting to me. Casting Ian McKellan as the venerable Sherlock has me sold on it.

I'm all about Generations, at least the "Classics" releases that homage G1. Unfortunately, Combiner Wars seems to be Hasbro's focus in the line, and I'm lukewarm about it, since the figures are designed to be simple in transformation with the idea of mold-milking ad nauseum. They feel like very cheaply made toys to me. I'll be happy when they return to making the regular figures, although by now, the majority of G1-based characters have already been produced. However, I've found a number of the IDW based figs to be pretty solid. The B-2 Bomber-ish Megatron comes to mind. I was hoping that Legends, or Legion, class Kickback would be revealed. They did a great job translating Bombshell and Shrapnel, so I'm looking forward to having all three Insecticons. The TFW2005 boards are indeed unpleasant, often puerile and profane. In the infrequent times I've perused their boards to parse out a shred of constructive opinion or info, I've felt mired in comments that seem to originate from people with unchecked psychological and behavioral issues, with neither the means nor the desire to moderate their discourse in a controlled, mature, or intelligent manner. Of course we've had our share of heated posts here over the years, but comparably, MW is a far more refined environment. However, TFW2005 is still a great resource for TF news, and I'm glad to see more pics of MP Ironhide. Personally, I think TT did a stellar job on him, esp considering the disparity between his original toy and the animation model. They didn't have to include the little tray with all his add-ons (Sonadar sensor and his back missile are great), but they did as a nostalgic nod, and it really completes the character. All he needs now are,"leakin' lubricants" to make him truly complete.- 16711 replies

Congrats on the haul, David. Personally, I doubt I'll ever spend money on a G1 toy again (except maybe cassette releases), as articulation trumps nostalgia for me. If those old designs were modified to resemble that excellent box art, then I'd be interested. As it is, I prefer my old Classics Seekers to the G1 toys. Personal preference. But as a collector, I sincerely hope that they are full of awesome to you. Edit: Just read the post above last concerning Leader Jetfire, and I have to agree with your criticisms. The way moving parts are molded to just snap into a swivel slot would have been optimal for creating separate fists and a two-axis swivel piece for each foot to allow for foot rotation and ankle tilt, necessitating only four additional parts and a modification to the foot linkage and foot. Kinda surprised a third party hasn't addressed these already. As for the main gear...inexcusable design laziness and cheapness, not to mention it looks terrible. The packs are so-so; I think they could have done better. Lastly, I wish they could have nixed the horizontal stabs altogether, but I get they were going for an F-22 look, plus they needed something for the arms to tab onto, so it's grudgingly forgivable. Really, really makes me wish the YF-23 had won the fighter competition, though; it's such a beautiful aircraft, and it makes me sad when I see all the fugly F-22 toys when we could have had lovely F-23 toys everywhere instead, including Jetfire's alt mode. Somewhere in a parallel universe, where greater minds prevail, happy humans coexist in a world at peace with F-23's patrolling the azure skies, glorious F-23 toys are produced in abundance, and the F-22 is but a faded memory in the annals of aviation, as it should have been. But I digress... Other than the aforementioned gripes, Jetfire's a pretty fantastic figure, and definitely one of the best aircraft TF designs, IMHO. I absolutely love the G1 Skyfire likeness. It's pure goodness.- 16711 replies

I'd also like to see their take on the YF-21, or a VF-22 Bowman Tribute in 21 colors. Whatever they need to do to justify it. VF-21 Advance! Aside from that, Variable Glaug, VF-14, VF-5000.

Esp since mil spec hydro fluid is bright red...looks like the damned strut is bleeding. I know from lots of experience. Despite being a thoroughly messy affair, and obstinate linkage bolts often confounding the breakdown, repacking struts was one of the more fun jobs.

Transformation will get easier. It doesn't require courage, so much as a bit of patience and care. Looseness out of the box is generally to be expected, considering the amount of handling these things endure over the course of being shipped. Mine was as well, but went together quite tightly after a good transformation. Even right out of the box, a little squeeze here, tweak there closed most of the gaps, shield in fighter notwithstanding.

Terminator 5/Terminator: Genisys, opening July 1, 2015
M'Kyuun replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I saw it on Saturday with the spousal unit; it was two hours of entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. I liked the references to the old films, although I have to wonder: if they can make Arnold look like his younger self, why can't they do the same with the rest of the guys in the '84 scenes, esp the punks(Bill Paxton, esp) from whom the T-800 got his clothes. And hire an actor that at least looks somewhat like Michael Biehn. Sheesh. Do have to agree, no chemistry between the leads, but I liked old Arnold. Upon reflection, I have to agree there was more tension from the constant chasing of the leads over the really big threat of Skynet's activation and subsequent human annihilation. It would have been a cool surprise if, after everything, Skynet actually won, and the whole things starts anew (only this time, Skynet is much better informed, and far more formidable) In the end, this was Terminator-Lite. And PG-13, too, with an actress known to doff garments for the sake of her craft.- 508 replies
