Fact: YOU WILL LISTEN TO BASARA'S SONG! Source: Nekki Basara!

Robotech II: The Sentinels, live action Dragon Ball movie, Cabin Boy, Barbarella, and of course standards like Last Starfighter, etc.

Had it been a bunny only poll, I'd definately have voted for Kim...or Sally.

Galaxy Railways, first volume is out now, very awesome. If you're familiar with Galaxy Express, Captain Harlock, Yamato, or any Matsumoto work, you already know what to expect.

George Lucas now wants to rape your adulthood...
Keith replied to Noriko Takaya's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, if he wants to get into anime, he should let Leiji Matsumoto remake all of Star Wars. -
Most definately Emilia, who took the term "big ole titties" to the next level.

Actually, they're quite a bit different in that HnK is primarily a love story. It's obvious that the film paid homage to Aim for the Top! in a lot of places, but there's nothing wrong with that (especially considering how much Top! took from other sources itself). 316373 I don't know, I think they're a lot more alike than not. Leaving a schoolmate behind to go off to war, superbadass ambiguous aliens, first big battle shown is "a lot" like Noriko's first sortie, only with no Smith, etc. I'm not saying it's a bad homage, it just doesn't match up in story quality (though it's much shorter, which makes it understandable). Plus it doesn't give you that big heart tug like the last episode of Gunbuster, and there's no fanservice.
-
If you've seen Gunbuster, imagine a really stripped down fanmade version. i.e., go watch Gunbuster instead
-
I think it has more to do with the fact that Zero is fairly recent, and as of yet unlicenced over here (as such, there's not that much of an opportunity to hear about it unless you're up in the Macross fan "know." As for 7, it's only controvercial here.

There's a new rush album?

Tim Burton's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

Of course they were, they got a big fat paycheck. -
We were calling each other bitch, which was fun for a little while. Oh yeah, there's a new RT series coming out. When? Who knows. 315549 Is that the one with the magic buckethead helmets that control robots?

Maroon? Bitch, I'm Black! 315449 Bitch he's quoting Buggs Bunny. Anyways, seeing as the appropriate time for tragic events to be considered funny is 22.3 years, you're going to have to let this go in about 2 Keith. 315471 Bitch, I know he's quoting bugs bunny, I however was quoting myself, but then by your sad rules, it'll take you another 22.3 years to consider it a joke. As for the Robotech B.S., as long as people keep using it as a crutch excuse for what was done, I'll point out the bullshit of it.

Are you still griping about 7? "Let it go"

Tim Burton's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.
Keith replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Saw it, and as much as I love Tim Burton, I hate this movie. Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka is just as spoiled, juvenile, etc as all of the children put together. It makes the lessons entirely pointless. The new "dentist" plot point just wastes time, and takes the story absolutely nowhere it needs to go. The Oompa Loompa songs are so noisy, you can't even hear the lyrics (again, making them pointless), and it overall has an all flash/no substance feel. All that talk about trying to be closer to the book than the 70's movie, and they deviate even further for no real apparent reasons. The old Gene Wilder one is infinately better. Willy Wonka should be a Genius character that comes off as a bit evil to teach the kids, not someone who's just as stupid & petty as them. -
No, there was only a full 50 episode run, tons of merch, multiple soundtracks, 3 extra produced episodes, a short movie, a 4 episode OVA sequel, etc. Probably didn't catch on that well at all Like it or not, 7 was popular in Japan, deal with it. If it wasn't, it would have been clipped mid run. The animation is no worse than that of Wing (which aired a year later), and was a common standard for its era. Not super excellent, but also not subpar. The music was great and varied, regardless of whether you like the style or not, it was very well produced. The Valkyries don't look even remotely "gayish" they have faces, get over it. Even then, there's only 3 of them. Had Macross 7 been the first series to feature mecha with faces, then maybe peoples attacks on them could be understood, but seriously, get over it.

And yet there's still robotech. Besides, I didn't bring up the B.S. about the syndication crap to start with.
-
Of course it doesn't matter, it got butchered anyway. Are you honestly going to argue that it got less butchered somehow the way they did it? They were held to the same standards & practices regarldess. The difference is, we could have gotten something closer to what was done with Yamato's trim into starblazers, as oposed to Macross's being meshed in with two completely unrelated shows. And don't forget, by the time of these releases, there was no direct to video market yet. Macek was the devil, he took someone elses show, and pretended to create something of his own.

The only reason why there are so many negative reviews of 7 (which even in itself aren't that many negative reviews) are because it's detractor's are so negative. 7 is a great series, didn't have the highest animation budget (not that anything other than Macross OVA's in the franchise get decent budgets), but overall very good animation for its time, on spec character models, etc. If you like rock music, or more specifically j-pop, then you're already set. As for the story, if you are interested in the backstory of the Protoculture, then you've absolutely no reason not to watch.
-
Nope, they could have just as easily done an anthology series under the main robotech name, or gone for saturday morning syndication instead of weekday syndication. Or gone for network pickup instead of syndication. There were may avenue's open to them, they just chose the most plagiaristic method.

Yup.

Amongst the extra's on the first disc are interviews with Matsumoto. In both, he mentions using the series as a crossroads for all his major characters & series. As for it being 70's, that's the whole beauty of it
-
Don't forget the steam powered wooden mecha fight in "A Tale of Two Robots" from Robot Carnival.

In case anyone missed it, Galaxy Railways vol 1 + box just came out last week. I was just expecting another 13 or so episode OVA, just to find out we're getting a nice 6 disc 26 episode TV series (with animation quality easily matching the recent Endless Odyssey OVA). There's 5 episodes on this first disc, and so far it's shaping up to be an awesome series. Somewhat of a 999 meets Yamato styled mix. Definately reccomended. Hell, with it being Matsumoto's 50th anniversary project (anniversary of officially getting into Manga & Anime), it's even promised to have cameo's from all his works.
