as much as i love talking about minmay this almost qualifies as a newbie faq question - yes in the tv series both minmay and minmei were used, but eventually Minmay was the final romanization decided on - Macross albums, Mikimoto illustrations, etc all after the series refer to Minmay as Minmay. Robotech, however, uses Minmei - makes it easier for us fans to differentiate tween HG and Big West at least lol.

I wonder if the Animeigo Macross will ever make it to Netflix - if they have Plus, Robotech, and even Macross II, then why not Animeigo?

As much as I love Minmay, I doubt the hype is all about a Minmay doll, even if it's a mechanical one that walks around and sings songs It's probably on the order of the hype before the Star Trek Enterprise came out (pretty big news tho not macross) - so I could see a Garland being hyped. If it IS macross-related, any news is good news I say!

Even the KISS comics really dont convey music well - they just waggle gene simmons tongue alot. Can anyone name a manga/comic that has conveyed a good sense of audio? i think a while back there was a *im gonna be a rock star* manga but didnt follow it. anyhow, imho doing macross would be hard just for the fact that you really do need the music. even if they did a manga adaptation of Zero, can you imaging Sara singing *la la la!* and rocks floating in the air?

cosplay? are you thinking of asking her to suit up as minmay and give the Cosplay Angel a run for her money? that would be interesting to say the least.

Grats A7! To tie your stuff to the general public but stay true to the underground, how about covering titles that folks grew up with but didn't necessarily know the origins about? Robotech is a good one - not everyone knows about the whole Macross/SouthernCross/Mospeada thing, and you can even recommend buying/renting those available titles to compare them to your listener's childhood memories. That would work with Star Blazers/Yamato too, but not with Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman, since I think Gatchaman TV still isn't available on DVD. Anyhow, that could be a "walk down memory lane" segment. Another show could be about game related-anime. from the ok (Zone of the Enders, Street Fighter Animated Movie) to the "eh" (Tekken or Fatal Fury on dvd) to the UGH (Street Fighter USA TV lol, or whatever) Again, you reach a broad base but point them to some stuff they might not have thought of checking out. toy/model related anime is a way to go, tho transformers/zoids is sorta obvious. maybe something about Mazinger Z and Gundam and how those shows really drove a toy/model craze in japan? you could even bring in some toys/models to accentuate your point (bring in a valk!) Of course, you can go by Genre. Horror, Historical (Samurai/Ninja), Comedy, etc. But that's sorta boring lol. You could go by director (Miyazaki for instance) which is always interesting, or even by illustrator (Mikimoto!) or producer (Kawamori?) to talk about the industry-side of anime. finally, it might be fun to point out some cult real life stuff that Otaku do, like cosplay. folks love to read about that alternative lifestyle stuff lol. good luck with your new show!

Shinji = Scott Hunter? brrr...

Mospeada was done by Anime Friend. Yeah, but considering Amano did the initial designs, look how far they deviated... Can you imagine having to animate in Amano's style? That'd be painful and almost impossible with a budget for a mid-80's TV series. Amano? Really? I didn't know that. Amano as in the Final Fantasy guy and the Vampire Hunter D guy? For an 80s movie I thought the Vampire Hunter D movie was ok - but definitely not up to showing off Amano's illustrations lol. And that was for a full leangth feature movie - if it was done on a tv budget Amano's D would have turned in his undead grave i'm sure.

BACK to the subject... The first time i managed to get thru an entire series of anime that switched back and forth between cgi and cel at will was Initial D. That thing gave me a HEADACHE- every curve and turn was cgi car vroom/cel driver reacts. But you know what? After a while it grew on me. I think Macross Zero is alot smoother than Initial D in transition, but it can still be pretty jarring at times. For an anime, the worst thing it can do is jar you out of your mesmerized immersion into all that is Kawamori. But in the long run, heck i'll get used to it, and once i get past the gimmicky nature of it i'll just start enjoying the anime lol.

i'm cool with it all as long as they keep Shinji a japanese kid. i guess you could argue away the asianess of all the other characters except shinji and his dad. masato doesn't look asian as originally drawn per se and even rei isn't techincally "japanese" lol. when is the last time you've seen an asian teenager boy carry a film? and then why bother having the setting in toyko if it won't keep any type of asian basis in the area? big big kudos to the RL film if shinji stays asian is all i'm saying.
