I think WF saturated the movie market for a while & I got rather tired of him - or at least all the similar roles he ended up playing. However, I liked Anchorman b/c is was just so flipping ridiculous & random. I'm not sure that a sequel would be able to preserve that. It would probably just try to be bigger, zanier, grosser than the first one. This diminishes both the sequel & the original in my eyes. (null)

If I recall, the Sound Energy system really didn't *require* the performer to be in the cockpit. Didn't it transmit the energy through fold space to a converter on the M7, which was then directed back to the fighter? I got the impression that the fold wave projectors were designed just to interfere with the vajra's communications. However, with the proximity of 2 infected pop stars and Alto's connection to them & his plane, the system served as a convenient conduit for their song & message. (null)

Gunbuster, it's a punishment for the rebellion of the districts. Having to offer up their children in exchange for safety keeps the districts in line. But instead of just killing the teens, the games give the people hope that they might win out. And so it works, a little carrot, a lotta stick, year after year. (null)

The wife & I just saw this yesterday. I enjoyed the book, and I thought the film was pretty good. The camera work was shaky at first, but it either backed off, or I got used to it. The casting was spot on, though and the production design was cool. It seems that young adult novels translate better to movies because they don't delve too deep. It's not that they're always shallow, just more accessible. 'Course, they also come with a built-in audience... Which makes them a safe bet. (null)

Prometheus - on Blu-Ray and DVD Oct. 9, 2012
Kelsain replied to Pizza the Hutt's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It's starting to seem like there's a lot more to this film than is obvious in the trailers. Good.... Here's my idea: perhaps the "invitation" leads to the sunny planet, where they discover the giant head & enough stuff to keep Weyland interested. But that's just the first leg. Perhaps clues there lead them to LV426. Whatever happens in the film, Weyland-Yutani is looking for the mystery planet, all the ET goodies, and what happened to the expedition. It then becomes a pre-programmed priority for all WY ships to find Prometheus' beacon. However much later Alien occurs, the Nostromo picks up the warning from the Prometheus. After the events of Alien, the company might have the planet, but not the geographic location of the derelict. So the colony is set up as a front to find it. Planetary surveys are part of that effort. Why send out expeditions if you can set up a home base on the right planet? But it's a big place, and until Ripley shows up with more info, they can't find it. Of course that's all rampant speculation. Hopefully Scott has even better things served up for us! (null) -
Well, I decided to stick with Toy-Wave, since I've used them before. Shipping put the price higher than Nippon-Yasan, but between prior trust and getting hired full-time last week - I figured I could spare it.

What wm_cheng has been up to lately...

Wow! Amazing, thanks for posting those. It's always such a shame that these great set get torn down & trashed immediately. Even moreso when they get completely cut from the film. Well, I presume you got paid, just the same! Fewer bragging points, though... (null) -
Just got back from seeing this, and I was rather pleased with it. It was silly, but fun. I think one of the bigger problems with these films is the "scifi language." So you've got a drink that can allow you character to understand the language - but it won't translate title or units... It's forgivable in the source material, and is easier to follow in text. But in dialogue, amid battles & explosions, it's just too clunky. (null)

I'm pretty sure that's the jockey seen in Alien. Looks like the pilot chair. (null) -

Too much in trailers these days! Very nice, but I prefer the first one. So stoked to see this, still! (null) -

Well, I just placed a preorder at Nippon-Yasan. I'm supposed to pay for my Toy-Wave preorder this week, but N-Y comes out $30 cheaper in toto. Plus I don't have to pay til later. I was hoping for a few more reviews on the site before committing to one or the other. Seems like they've had some issues shipping, but mostly for the Sony Vita, and that appears to be b/c of the battery & shipping regulations. Probably wouldn't be a concern for the 171.

I think the dubs of Miyazaki's films have been good over all. They're always brimming with top talent. However, I'll admit that I prefer Nausicaa's voice actress in Warriors of the Wind. Anna Paquin just didn't seem right to me - probably just bc I grew up w/ the voice of "Princess Zandra." Patrick Stewart was predictably perfect for Yupa, though. (null)

Nausicaa. Hands down. Seeing "Warriors of the Wind" in the 80s was a watershed moment for me, particularly since I just stumbled upon it. Years later, I discovered the astounding manga, but the film holds a special place in my heart. The story, the music, the design, everything. Of the others, I really wasn't impressed by Howl & have not yet seen Ponyo. I also need to take in some of these again since having a daughter.

Well, that's Alec Guiness too, so that works! (null)

Sigh. First our resident 1/72 modeler who inspires us, now I find out Master Cheng has somehow achieved the life I dreamed of as a post-biology undergrad. Good on you, sir! Always wanted to be a production designer, geographic placement and talent aside... I totally intended to catch The Thing while it was out - but it only lasted about a week or two here in bu-fu. -
Hope they don't raise the price on those that got in at $195... (null)
