I hope I'm able to land one of these. I've been busy moving so I've completely failed on all recent preorders.
-
If you gave it to me, I'd appreciate the gift... but I'm not buying it.

A little delayed since I'm busy but I would disagree on DYRL only being good for people familiar with SDF Macross. While familiarity with SDF Macross helps I think DYRL functions as a standalone film. The same is true of MacPlus Movie Edition (although that obviously wasn't much of a challenge).

I really liked Macross Frontier but I felt it had its flaws. I really disliked the Frontier movies. The movies seemed like such a great chance to fix the problems with the TV show and instead they just compounded the problems. I made the mistake of watching the first Frontier movie with a non-anime fan and afterwards I apologized. It was terrible. I would probably put the Frontier movies on a similar level to Macross7 and I would put those below MacrossII. I could show MacrossII to someone who isn't an anime nut and if they hadn't seen DYRL they might think it's alright. I could never show Macross7 or the Macross Frontier movies to anyone but hardcore Macross fans. That said, the hardcore Macross nerd in me would probably rank Macross7 above the Frontier movies and put MacII last. Once you get over the mind-numbing repetition of 7 and how over-the-top it is in practically every respect it does tell a story that adds to the Macross mythology so that's nice. The Frontier movies just rehash the Frontier story horribly. There was some conversation about Macross not being gritty and realistic. My favorite Macross animation is DYRL. I'm not going to call it realistic, but there is a head that gets stepped on and some point blank bullets to the face at one point... so yeah, Macross can be violent. DYRL did the violence way better than Frontier did. Squishy guy in episode one was too obvious... not nearly as cool as the violence I just sited in DYRL. Now all that said, I appreciate that DYRL was a movie. I wouldn't want or expect a TV show to carry in the same tone that DYRL did. I think Frontier did a pretty good job playing the tone right overall.

GERWALK mode looks like it's going to be a pain in the ass. The waist 'swivel' means that the intakes aren't locked in right? I'm thinking "floppy mess".

I hate the following things about Bandai: 1) I can never get inside scoops about what they have going on other than the vaguest of rumors 2) i have a hard time getting their toys at all, let alone scoring any sort of a discount.

Non-Japanese human characters in the Macross franchise?

The LaSalle family could very easily have their roots in Louisiana. -
I think the story of Zero is pretty bad and poorly told. I do like some of the action though.

I think the YF29 is a good example, it was surprising to release a one off mold for the movie and then they gave us video game variants. Now we have a one off mold for a video game, I would be surprised if it doesn't show up again somewhere else to give Bandai a better chance at recouping funds... But it's a pricey toy so maybe that solves the problem.
-
So you think that mold is just to support the video game license huh? It could happen, Yamato did it with their Koenig. Yamato did go out of business though.

If I were Bandai and I had the rights to make the VF-1 I would be all about Macross the First. However, if Arcadia still has the VF-1 license that doesn't seem very likely. Since Bandai is making a VF-30 I'm guessing we're going to get a VF-30 story. That's speculation based purely on toys for you and had I done that prior to Frontier I would have been totally wrong. I will say this, I don't think the story will be about destroids but it seems like it'd be relatively easy to add a character that is destroid-centric. I mean, we got a lot of focus on the Koenig in Frontier so they're heading in the right direction.

I'm just getting caught up so maybe someone has commented but I think this slant wouldn't ring true. Bandai had a VF-171 designed but they were afraid to make further investment in it. It was the success of the renewal VF-25 that convinced them to give it a go. Since the 171 was designed before the 17 if Bandai was really reacting to Yamato's 17 release they could have sold the 171 six months earlier so it would drop at the same time as the Yamato toy but they didn't do that.

Regarding the VF-1 and GERWALK mode. I believe the story goes that Matsuhiro designed a mock-up VF-1 based on Kawamori's design. Matsuhiro had been hired by Takatoku to do the legwork on the toy and when the Matsuhiro guy met with the Takatoku guy and Kawamori the toy ended up in what would later be known as GERWALK mode and thus the mode was born. I think this story is a little slanted though. I'd guess what really happened is that GERWALK mode existed already but that Matsuhiro wasn't told it was necessary for the toy so they designed a two mode transformation VF-1. Then, when fiddling around with it they found that their toy could do all three modes just fine and some how this story developed into Takatoku creating GERWALK mode.

I'm not so sure. The VF-4 maybe, especially if they made it a Flashback version. The VF-11B/C are coveted by a handful of people and a release of any volume would far exceed demand. If they made them to order through a website and could make a run of like 200 valks then sure... otherwise it's right back to the HLJ bargain bin.
-
You seem to be assuming this toy will share any thing with the old mold and I suspect that's not true.
-
I'm confused, it sounds like everyone's discussing Robotech's The End of the Circle here...
-
Hopefully the manner of construction makes a VF-0S and VF-0A easy to produce so those potential sales can take the edge off the VF-0D MSRP. Unfortunately, I don't think there's any market for a non-canon VF-0 market so if I'm Arcadia three variants would be all I'd budget for. Fortunately, the 0 overall seems to be a simpler design than the 19 so hopefully that means fewer parts and that further drives down the price. So, I'll put my vote in for cheaper than the YF-19 but not by much.
-
GERWALK mode on some valks looks pretty bad and seems like an afterthought. The VF-1 and VF-0 rock it super well. The YF-21 and YF-19 on the other hand... well... they figured out a way to let them have that mode and that's about all you can say for them.
-
They could be successful with this if it's sparkly and includes extras only available through this purchase. I'd be up for that. -
-
Negative, this began at Yamato. The success of the VF-19 moved the YF-19 project in front of the VF-0D project.
-
Well, everyone tells me Mac7 is popular in Japan so I guess this makes sense... but wow, what an easy pass. I think the sound booster might have gotten hard to get but I'll bet you can still buy the Kai for less than MSRP out there. The sound booster was kinda lame. -
-
I'm not a huge VF-0 fan but I'm looking forward to owning one of these.
-
Maybe this is where Yamato missed their mark. The GnuDou figures should have been characters, not mecha!

I am looking forward to a pretty epic Votoms photo shoot once I move into my new house. EPIC I TELL YOU!!!! Can't wait. -

What law where? I'm sure you're a pretty good lawyer but I've been brushing up on my bird law and I'm pretty sure they are not responsible for the costs of return shipping... I think it's even in the PayPal terms of service.
