For those that want everything in 1-350, Hallmark released the Star Wars Sand Crawler ornament that's almost dead on to scale. Plus it has cool sound effects and a nice paint job. -MT- 419 replies

Awesome work Dobber and Derex! My son and I threw together the newer Bandai 1-500 Yamato kit and loved the gun action on the turrets. I have the 1-350 kit I'm itching to finally get to. The monster is also my favorite mecha so it's great to see one coming together and with some love.-MT

Hey Milhouse, I can't post more photos of the builds until my house is repaired, but here's some to help give you an idea: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=41130 http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=41133 The most important steps are in the planning and scaling stages. The drawings you see under some of the finished work were printed several times and sized many times until they were just right. Even with a scale ruler and "canon" line art, Macross has a lot of "anime magic" to it. One drawing shows something one way and then another view shows the details another way. Decide AHEAD OF TIME what views and scales you are going to use. Mid-build you will be like, "oh, that's how that really goes!" Your brain will fool you into screwing up! Like Ace said above, you will make many changes to your parts. I've rebuilt parts three times to get what I'm looking for - so don't rush what you're doing. I've been surfacing styrene and then supergluing it with clamps. Then finishing off the glued blocks. This has withstood lathing, drilling and machining. Some people use MDF board or Model Board (very costly). Start with a good plan of all views if possible and then glue them on to the stock. You will need a depth gauge and calipers to ensure thickness and parts line up with parts you can't put right up to the drawing. Your eyes will decieve you. If you don't stick to your drawings, you'll blow it! I use jigs or machines as much as possible to ensure my cuts are where they are supposed to be and how they are supposed to be. Especially if you need to make more than one of the same thing. Then casting may be a good option, like for missiles or thrusters. Hopefully what Ace said above and these few humble bits will hellp you out! - MT

That's cool! It takes the "fun" out of hunting parts. - MT

Programmable is expensive! Radio Shack has programmable circuits, but overkill for this. Like Grapetang said, look for toys AND ornaments! I have the 1/350th Space Battleship Yamato kit, but wanted to emulate the tachion particles glinting around the barrel. Of course the kit comes with lighting, but they missed that part. So I plan to drill micro holes and insert fiber optics into it. So where to get the lighting? After going through several stores and looking at all sorts of toys, games and stuff, I found a Tinker Bell ornament with lights and sounds. I removed the speaker and the lighting has several LEDs that fade and dance in random sequence. They are white so I'm adding a color filter from busted up tailight lens. Keep in mind that a lot of things that have random blinking lights are actually blinking them in order (like for landing bay guide lights). The LEDs just have to be pulled and re-arrnaged in order of flashing. Hope that helps! - MT

I too just moved and am designing a new workbench for my studio. Now if only my work didn't block the photos! No internet yet at home until some repairs are made from flooding (on the first whole day in the house too)! I'm looking forward to seeing your setup. - MT
